Spirit Shards
I was actually expecting this topic to say the opposite. Although I certainly have more than I need I often see people complaining that they can’t get enough or it takes too long to farm them when they want them.
I have to say though I don’t see how having too many is a problem. They go into the wallet so it’s not as if they take up space, and you can always use them to make exotics to sell (or salvage for the sigil).
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I’ve been wishing for other uses for these things myself. I’ve got between 4K-5k spirit shards now, and nothing I want to use them on.
A couple of things I’ve thought of
1) have all of them first go into our inventory and allow us to sell the ones in our inventory
2) have the NPC sell boosts that last for X amount of time
Speed
Magic find
Harvesting
Armor
Damage
Etc…
ANet may give it to you.

Personally I have over 6k of these currently and between reset and logging off last night I got a load more in WvW – I already have too many tomes stacked up in the bank so it is either consume for shards or bin them.
I the past I have already used at least 2k of these for upgrading siege and other mystic forge related stuff as well as augur stones for ascended kit – I would just like to have a way of using them faster than I earn them like you can with every other “currency”.
I use the three from dailies every day to promote mats. But I have no reason to get rid of the 1000+ I have on top of these. Saving them for a rainy day.

If everyone was promoting mats, would there be enough profit margin for this? Probably not. The profit margin is available for you to do that because all players aren’t promoting mats, only a percent of the population. That’s why another use for these items would be good rather than have everyone trying to do the same thing with them to the point where there’s no profit in doing so.

Then I would stop promoting mats and save those shards for a rainy day as well. Shards are used for MF mats from the attendant for MF “crafting”. If you don’t want to have anything to do with the MF then the shards are pretty much useless.

If they have more uses then all can use the ones they get every day and not crowd out the profit from promotions. As it is now, it’s either try to make a profit from promotions (and each person who tries this reduces the overall profit for everyone else) or have them pile up unused. The problem is that the faucet is bigger than the sinks. More sinks for people like me who rarely promote means more money for people like you and your promotions of mats.

Let us trade 2 spirit shards for 1 tome of knowledge.
Let us trade 2 spirit shards for 1 tome of knowledge.
What use would that be? One of the reasons that people are gaining so many shards is due to a tome surplus.
I’ve never used tomes to get shards. Anyways the thread is about other ways to spend them and for those players who still key farm once a week, 2 shard to 1 tome makes sense.

More choices would be great, but when we imply that we have an excess of a currency, an increase in the overall cost of the things that currency buys, also resolves the excess and is usually easiest.
Suggesting additional potential uses for spirit shards is the best way, and personally I really like the vendor for temporary buffs idea. With all the access to tomes of knowledge we have now, I suspect they like where it is now.
There is an argument however that why does it need another purpose other that it’s designed for just because “you” don’t use that area? If you don’t want to promote, craft mystic weapons or make precursors, oh well.
Although I do like the 2 shards to make a tome idea a lot.
