Stacking damage overtime/drift
Good idea in theory, difficult to implement and test in a software perspective. It requires massive change to engine side program. So it won’t happen or maybe you can wait another 10 years or so for GW3 and they “might” do it.
Player’s models collision could fix all of the brainless “stack” meta in PvE and WvW and add strategy and tactic into this game. I would guess, however, that GW2 engine couldn’t handle it.
Player model collision would also open doors to people griefing others by blocking access to places and events. There are spots where it would only take a few people moving strategically to block others from even entering events/attacking bosses.
Collision Detection is indeed the holy grail of PvP MMOs. Alas, it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon.
WAR had it, and it did eventually work pretty ok. Too bad the rest of the game was pretty half-baked.

Server side cant handle the math load, proly they are researching in this.
But yes, offcourse it would be a magnificent imprementation, if it worked :P.

Sure, and then you’d have people in WvW and PvE with nothing better to do than to block your ability to leave locations and deprive you of your experience. It would not be hard for someone to organize enough people to block off 2 other teams in EotM and just rake in the points for 3 hours. You wouldnt be able to report it because they’re just sitting there not doing anything inherently “bad.”

Probably, but potential benefits of such feature are far outweigh it’s few shortcomings.

EotM does have a bit too many chokepoints, that’s true. However, you could implement a “push” mechanic where the player who actively tries to move in one direction would push back the one that is just passively standing there. Would at least make sure no AFKers near cliffs
Another method would be to be able to “push past” friendlies, with slower movement, but without either of the toons actually shifting position laterally.
But yeah obviously friendly CD would open it up to massive griefing and that’s probably something ANet does not want to happen.
OR they could just remove the AoE cap and upgrade their engine/servers to be able to handle the load. That would remove all stacking overnight.

And simultaneously lead to the nerf of staff elementalists. Meteor Shower/storm/whatever the hell it is, is the single most damaging spell in the game, and it can already take out a lot of people WITH the 5 person limit due to the sheer number of individual hits within the skill. God help whoever is in the way of an ele if there was no cap.

But that’s exactly what I was after. Force people to spread out. Sure a change like this would bring also damage changes to AoE abilities, but the final result would still be the end of stacking and the possibility to create deadly chokepoints without siege equipment. Obviously might also need some redesigning of the WvW maps, especially EotM.
Anyhow after the AoE cap would be removed, people could only blame themselves for piling up in a ridiculous zerg ball. Battles would also spread over much more ground. In my opinion that would be a positive thing.
how does stacking affect you though?
right now as it is, if you dont want to stack you dont have to, so why bring in a mechanic because you dont like something….that you dont have to do……
Technical issues aside, I’d be all for adding collision detection (except in cities.)
It would certainly change all zerg content as well as dungeons.
Unfortunately I’m pretty sure the computational requirements make this impossible.
let’s all queue up in line to talk to the TP npc x-D
I fear that in many instances collision detection would disable players ability to melee bosses in larger zerg situations. There can’t possibly be enough room around a mob for 50+ players to each be able to reach the target?
Also, as mentioned, griefing – as well as having lines for NPCs…

Rofl what? You seriously underestimate the prevalence and determination of trolls in online games. Not to think of players unconsciously creating problems with collision stuff.

it really really doesn’t.
the “shortcomings” of body-block griefing are straight up game killing.
