Staff Elementalist skills dont use staff?
Maybe a candidate for the Ele forum? Plus the title is a bit misleading. Plus I’m not sure what you mean by rerolling your mesmer’s “look” into a different profession.
Isn’t necro staff the same? Seem to recall my Necro holding the staff in the right hand and casting spells with the left.
ANet may give it to you.
Same animations with mesmer.
Ele staff air skill 2 has the staff being used to cast. But I like the fact that when wielding a staff the characters other hand does the conjuring. I’d find it weird if conjurers threw their staff willy nilly to cast.
I don’t actually get the point of this thread. There’s nothing wrong with the animations as they are.
You would think they’d use the staff and something like a fireball comes out of it, much like the light from Gandalf’s staff when he repelled the Nazgul from eating the retreating men of Osgiliath towards Minas Tirith.
But alas, in-game it is used merely as a walking stick, since magic can apparently happen in the hands of casters, which makes me think.. do casters need staff at all?
Well Id like the staff to be involved in some manner, like jointly with the casting hand and not just hanging out like a coat you dont want to put on and cant just leave somewhere. its really disappointing that theres nothing like that.
It’s all about interpretation. From what I recall from the book I would not have had that scene play out like it did in the movie. The Devs have said that the weapons are the focus items for magic users, so the magic cannot be used without them…personally I disagree with this but it’s their game/lore. Also maybe your video card isn’t showing it but on my screen whenever my ele tosses a fire ball, she pulls fire from the staff head first and then tosses it with her left hand.
On my necro her staff forms a shadow scythe blade that she then (like my ele) proceeds to pull from and throw at the target.
As for more animations for each skill using the staff…I don’t know…I don’t need to see more sparklies and animations when I’m dropping a lava font, but I wouldn’t necessarily say no them either.

Forget all that wussy staff animations stuff, battlemage animations is the way to go! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4UfAL9f74I

Something else occurred to me as well. I would wonder if the devs created the animations so that they fit within the cast times for each of the skills. So that the actions used to call flaming rocks forth to rain down on your target occupies the predetermined cast time of three seconds. Also remember that each is supposed to be uniquely identifiable on the battlefield so that PvPrs can respond.
I usually hand my staff to my assistant so I can use both hands to cast spells.
I don’t need to use both hands but I enjoy adding some theatrics.
I didn’t read all the replies, but I can say that other fantasy games and movies. Staves are used as catalysts, You don’t need to actually use the staff but be holding onto it.

Well… for elementalists the only weapons that actually use them in the animations are daggers, warhorns and focus. Staff and Scepters are not that well animated, just a lot of particles and flashy lights.
I understand where you’re coming from OP, eventhough i like the staff skills myself.
But if A-net would take the time to do an animation overhaul for ele my vote goes out to scepter, it has IMO byfar the ugliest casting animations, with one exeption, that would be water trident, that one i really like
It’s just a source of magic, you channel with your other hands or call upon the sky.
I feel like you should using the staff if you are actually striking with it, like with revenant and daredevil, but this is a caster class, and if every single skill (20 of them) had to have some sort of animation involving the staff, they would run out of cool looking animations long before they finished, and it would probably have my caster (ele, necro, mesmer, etc) looking so undignified I wouldn’t want to play it anymore…
I’m now a bit worried that the peasants will find out that my staff is purely for show, and then they’ll be much harder to intimate and oppress…
I don’t mind the way elems use staff personally, maybe a few more abilities that use the staff the way Air 2 uses it, but at the same time, I like conjuring the fireball and the lightning in my hands to throw it.
Scepter though….. autoattacks just look weird, doing a superman pose…..
Huh, it does seem a little silly when you point it out.
Just the same, they’re good animations, and it would be even sillier to change them just because they don’t have enough staff-waving and staff-pointing.
In GW1, staff shoots magical projectiles from the staff with auto-attacks — but that’s so 250 years ago.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

Lol!
I see it as a bit silly on some skills and others it looks fine as I feel like you’re channeling the magic through the staff into yourself to conjure certain skills.
You want silly looking though look at ele with scepter. Just go do a lightning auto attack and see what i mean. It is completely facing another way whilst it comes out your hand that is holding the weapon…. can’t unsee it.
Dude, obviously the staff serves as a conduit for drawing the energy from the ley lines beneath the land into your body which you then fire from your hand. Clearly, the staff has to be placed on the ground. It’s physics, darnit.

thats what staff does. it just sits there. in your hand. thats held back and away from your body. completely uninvolved in all the shenanigans your left hand is going. its just stupid. i hate it. i am soured on staff and i havent even played it yet, because of the lame (non)animations
