Q:

I don’t understand why the GW2 character creator bothers with armor colors. I spent 15 minutes tooling around, seeing what I liked, getting my armor just so, and then the first upgrade at like level 3 uses a different color scheme and pees all over my efforts.

Does the color scheme you choose at the start come up again later with high-level armor, or is it all just a waste of time (and, seemingly, coding)?

Thanks!

In general, most people don’t worry about looks and dye colors before level 80. If you play regularly you’ll level quickly enough and change armor often enough that keeping a coherent look from armor upgrade to upgrade isn’t worth it. A fair number of people buy an outfit and put that on top of their armor until level 80, which is the time they’ll settle on a look and the dyes for that char. So, it’s not generally recommended to worry about how your char looks at low levels. If you have an outfit use that. If not, just play and look through the wardrobe for a look you’ll want at level 80.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Different armours have different dye channels and there are hundreds of dyes and armour pieces to unlock. The starting screen is more like a taster than an accurate representation. You can reapply unlocked dyes for free as many times as you like, but as a new player most wont settle on a palette and wardrobe til 80.

I however am odd and re dye and wardrobe alts up the moment i leave char set up lol

It’s a holdover from the early days, before we had account wide dyes or searchable dye panels. Supposedly whatever starter dye scheme you got would be applied to any new gear you equipped so you’d keep your chosen palette without having to choose dyes unless you wanted to. I’m not sure that ever worked, everything seemed to go muddy brown when equipped no matter what colors you picked in advance. But then I always very quickly collected and used more dyes on each thing I wore, so maybe if I’d never reassigned anything’s color it would have picked up my starter choices.

These days I just pop ebony on everything to make it not terribly offensive on initial load in and then use my much fuller dye selection once in game. The character creation dyeing is a vestigial remnant of an older system. Though I suppose it does introduce new folks to dye channels and the idea that armor colors can be changed, so it’s useful for that.

Donari, the muddy brown thing can be rectified by switching back to the old piece and then back to new again. In case you weren’t aware.

I think I did know that but since I usually start fresh when dyeing a new piece anyway it hasn’t been crucial to me.

Fair enough. It didn’t look like it was much of an issue for you
