A simple question, we know Anet has had the technology to do this via the mystic forge as it is possible to do it with weapons and armour. So my question is why haven’t they applied this to ascended back pieces? If anything it is more a thorn in the side for those with infused ascended gear (like mawdrey) who want to swap stats but are instead forced to either not bother or undergo the process of making it again.

As far as this goes, there was a red post shortly after the ascended armor/weapon stat change update where they stated something about possibly adding this later for back pieces, rings, amulets, and accessories. I think part of the issue with these was the following: What, exactly, do you turn them into when you convert the stats? Ascended weapons and armor largely have 1 skin with just different colors. The other gear has multiple variations of what they could become and some of those things are collection items (namely the back pieces). Mawdrey does not fall into this category because you do get to pick its stats upon creation, but most back pieces do not have such a luxury.

If they can figure that out, then we will see them add this in.

Simply putting a insignia for the stats you want for back piece that have a range of stat opinions could work, it wasn’t suggesting it for back pieces with predefined stats. But instead for ones which have the choice to select stats.

The solution seems rather simple: make a recipe that resets backpieces into statless backpieces.

It wouldn’t be applicable to the fixed-stat backpieces, but the god-themed backpieces, Spinal Blades, and Mawdrey all have a “choose your stats” stage; rather than make a recipe for every backpiece/stat combination and trying to justify using an exotic insignia for the stat activator, each backpiece can just have two recipes (one for regular and the other for infused) with some neutral item like mist essence or a mystic coin.

Anet only did it for weapons and armor as a band-aid reaction to players exploding in anger when it was announced Ascended gear would have 10% more stats than exotic.

They said they would do something for all the rings people have accumulated, but it looks like that something is going to be some sort of salvaging.

Stat change is unlikely to happen for anything other than weapons and armor. (And there was recently a thread where the OP gave a reasonable argument that that might be removed also.)

As mentioned by others already;

- ANet is “looking into” doing something with ascended rings/trinkets
- Stat changing seems to be limited to weps/armor only at this stage

I would give anything in the world for ANet to make stay switching happen with back pieces and trinkets/rings etc… Salvaging just sounds like such a waste…

I don’t think that’s why they did it. Anyone with existing ascended armor or weapons would have had to completely remake their armor to change stats; that’s always been an issue. Plus, various dev posts before|after the change suggests it was a response to stats being moved from traits and into gear.

All of that applies to trinkets and backpieces. And, as others have noted, there’s nothing intrinsic to the mystic forge that prevents using insignias|inscriptions for conversion.

Bumping this because I think it is something that must happen.

At least for the stat selectable backpieces (not the ones with fixed stats, but all the god backpieces, order backpieces, mawdrey and so on…) – there has to be a way either through a recipe or mystic forge to reset them to a statless state.

A lot of ascended trinkets are associated with collections. (LS2, HoT story, HoT collections, etc). It would make those collections null in void if people could do a fractal/guild mission, and then just swap to the stat they want.

Resetting stat selectable backpieces via some sort of recipe is not going to do this because those stats are unavailable for majority of ascended backpieces when you craft it anyway.

For reference, these backpieces only:
There with Yakkington: A Traveler’s Tale
Bough of Melandru
Chaos of Lyssa
Light of Dwayna
Shadow of Grenth
Mawdrey
Luminate’s Backplate
Lightbringer’s Pack
Magister’s Pack
Warmaster’s Pack
Finite Result
Upper Bound
Quiver of a Thousand Arrows
__ Tempered Spinal Blades

Now the only problem is those Raid backpieces because they are the only backpieces with access to a wider variety of stats – but then just give them a reset recipe as well. I don’t see a problem with that.

That’s why I personally am only asking for a reset om the ones that are stat selectable in the first place when you craft them, such as Mawdrey.

Necro-post bump . . .

It’d be nice to hear any updates on this topic.

Specifically, can we trigger a reselect or even use the armor/wep recipe to add HoT stats?

Think this necro post is not needed and is very outdated because all the changes.
Last post was done May 1th 2016.
With the add of Bloodstone Fen (in July 26, 2016) we have the Blood Ruby Backpack with all stats selectable and, using Bloodstone Capacitor, we can reset those to change and choose again.
After that, ANet added Draconis Mons (in May 2, 2017) and now we have a scavenger hunt with The Wayfarer’s Henge, another backpiece with all the stats selectable (plus 3 exo backpieces, one per tier of the colection) as last reward.
At last but not least, with the add of Siren’s Landing (in July 25, 2017 ) we have 5 new backpieces with all the stats selectable.
As you can see, many things are changed from the time when this post was done.
If you don’t like for any kind of reasons, its ok. I am just letting know.
Have fun and good luck.

And also Ember Bay, Bitterfrost Frontier and Lake Doric added ascended backpacks with selectable stats, it’s fair to say that there are enough cheap options now that they don’t need to worry about this.

The Bloodstone backpack is the best one, of course, it has an incredibly cheap way of changing your backpack’s stats (it only costs 100 unbound magic).

All of that applies to trinkets and backpieces. And, as others have noted, there’s nothing intrinsic to the mystic forge that prevents using insignias|inscriptions for conversion.

Actually there is…. the output results. The Mystic Forge has a massive bespoke recipe list, with very few instances of wild card usage (which result in either a random item or multiple recipes for one specific output). To create a “one to many” recipe, they basically need to make a recipe for each affirmative item (like insignia) that will control the output results. The only reason armor/weapon stat swapping works the way it does, is by transforming a wild card input item to a specific item output. So any other weapon turned into a berserker stat WILL be a Zojja’s weapons (with a red skin) when it comes out.

The better approach was what they used for Blood ruby trinkets, except integrating it with the same type of UI used for the infusion extraction tool. This process doesn’t alter the Item ID (which is what the mystic forge is made for), but instead clears the meta data so you can reselect whatever stat the item offers, without altering the skin.

The last remaining question becomes “should” older stat selectable items have their selection expanded? Most of the stats are tied to their content pack….. HoT stats are only available from HoT items, and PoF stats would only be available through PoF items. But very few Tyrian items have the ability to access the full list of Core stats…. and of the few that do, were mostly retrofits of previously removed stats (like Explorers).

It’s hard to see why this would matter. ANet added recipes for all armor and all weapons (and fixed situations, e.g. pvp armor, where the recipes didn’t work). They added ascended breathers to the game and went back to add stat-changing recipes for those.

Plus there are all sorts of recipes for infusing backs & rings and attuning rings (which might or might not be infused first).

I don’t mean to suggest that it’s easy, but it was a simple solution that they used for other items.

As it turns out, when I wrote the post above a year ago, ANet seemed to have an entirely different strategy: making it almost trivial to get trinkets of the desired stats. Gathering sufficient mats in the new LS3 zones requires so little farming that even I can stomach it.

tl;dr sure, there are plenty of custom recipes, but ANet keeps adding more. As it turns out, it’s nearly as easy to replace trinkets (even backs) in the six newest zones.

I’d only like the ability to reset the stats of a piece I built. New stats would be great, but it’s unfair to people who’ve finished more recent collections. Resetting the stats would allow me to re-use the piece on a fresh alt and put my newer stat-choice pieces on my mains.

As people here said already, you can easily get a new ascended backpack with selectable stats. Anet added several new ways to get ascended backpacks, there should be one that is affordable for you. You can even buy some with karma and 200 orrian pearls. The one from Bloodstone Fen is even a bit overkill in my opinion because it only costs 100 Unbound Magic to reset it (and removal of Infusions if you added any). That’s basically a characteristic of Legendary items.

There is also the option to infuse a backpack to reset its stats, which costs a stack of ectoplasm though and can only be done once. I wouldn’t really be bothered by the whole thing, but rather spend 2 hours with four characters farming Siren’s Landing for Orrian Pearls and buy a backpack. It’s a more efficient and effective solution to the problem than asking for a feature that is usually for legendary items.
