State Of The Game (SOTG) Format...
Dunno, on my server WvW is the only place I see lots of people. I don’t know if you can support the claim that most players do PvE. Also, the biggest guilds on my server are strong at PvP. But being strong at PvP means being strong at PvE. In most MMOs pvp is the main part of the end game and PVE is to gear up.
However, yes all kinds of players must be there. All rounders, PvE only and PvP only. And especially all professions, else, kitten many games, we end up with uberstrong warriors and thiefs.
1. Then how come the Necro was specificly mentioned in the blog post about the change and a ArenaNet Dev said that if you played the necro you would really like this update.
2. For PvE they pull from the forums. Evaluate and verify themselves then decide what to do. Also PvE and PvP are separated. They ask PvP players because PvP takes a lot of skill that a lot of ArenaNet players just simply don’t have the time to develop.
WvW and PvE last time I checked shared skills.
3. PvP playtypes has always been a strong focus for ArenaNet. Why because it is the best endgame you can have. Unlimited always changing content.
TL;DR ArenaNet does not only focus on PvP a lot of their focus is there right now because honestly it is really lacking in what it needs to succeed. Also a lot of of the time when you balance PvP you balance PvE.
1. Then how come the Necro was specificly mentioned in the blog post about the change and a ArenaNet Dev said that if you played the necro you would really like this update.
In the last SOTG, the devs, said necros needed a boost, indirectly admitting Necros where kind of weak. Apparently in beta, Necros where considered OP and got there skills nerfed somewhat before GW2 was released. So, its kinda taken 8 months for necros to be finally given a boost.
At, this SOTG meeting what did the 80th lvl Necro player representative have to say? Well nothing because there wasn’t one…the players present mained Ele/Warrior, Engineer and I am not sure what the other mained but I don’t think it was Necro…
This may also account for the fact Necro was ignored for 8 months…
IMO, the majority of the buffs and nerfs are driven by the PvP community. ArenaNet has a stated goal to make this into a viable e-sport and they will make the adjustments necessary to make that happen.
The problem is that WvW and PvE are very different environments. For example, Warriors rule PvE but are bottom tier in PvP. Thieves rule PvP but are not so good an PvE, especially since the change to stealth that makes enemies just sit and wait for you to reappear.
Because ANet wants to keep the feel of PvP similar to the rest of the game (for obviously good reasons) unless a change is going to break WvW and PvE it’s applied universally.
Edit: For example, why is DPS still king of PvE. The idea that there is nothing that can be done is ridiculous. Even if you didn’t want to change the terrible AI, you could still make enemies with high toughness but low vitality (good for conditions).

I don’t necessarily see a problem with balance being applied universally. The thing that needs to complement that balance is the mob’s skills need a bit more variety to them. Much more like Guild Wars 1. With that variety it would make play much more entertaining without splitting skills PvE and PvP. Also ArenaNet has in the past Nerfed a PvP skill and left a PvE skill the same. They have also buffed some PvE skills and left PvP skills the same.
Also should this title not be PvE balance vs PvP balance.
Many of those that play Engineer feel their profession is neglected. If one of the players at the SOTG represents one who mains that profession (or plays it consistently), I guess having a representative there doesn’t always work in said profession’s favor.
Also, this format was created and put into practice by a group of players from the Guru forum. If we want a SOTG for PvE, we should do the necessary work to make it happen, no?

I think it is incredibly silly that they actually nerfed Necromancers that much from beta to launch. Like, how could anybody really know if they were really that OP? People had 3 days of play time every now and then, and hadn’t even learned how to really play yet, much less break a class wide open that they designed to fit in with the rest of the cast. It’s so bizarre to me.

Considering MAx Level PvP was possible since then, yes.
Necromancers used to be so strong that they would win virtually any 1v1.
I’d like to see a SotG for wvw.
You know, that pvp mode that is treated as extension of pve, for the joy of all players who take it seriously.

It doesn’t matter that Max Level PvP was available. It was the first time anybody had gotten a hand on the game and nobody knew how to play. Tons of new players to games always think that certain things are “overpowered” because they don’t know how to handle them at first. That is what I mean.
I am not saying that Necromancers weren’t overpowered. I’m saying it’s hard to believe that they were so overpowered that they nerfed them to the state they were in at launch.
I tried watching one of these videos. All they really talk about is Spvp which makes no sense to be because that’s the least popular game type when it comes to GW2. I guess its Anets way of catering to the 1% while neglecting the rest.
Are they still trying to promote GW2 as a esports game when its clearly failed in that department?
SOTG should be more aptly titled State of Spvp.

I have known how to play since Day 1 of the games release. Just because it takes you long to learn a class, does not mean someone else can learn faster. There are quite a few people who can learn a class just by reading the tool tips.
Go esports!! yay!!
People want to know what the devs are doing….well that’s what the devs are doing.
If this state of the game serves as my connection to the Devs and their ideas, then I would have to say that, personally, it has failed miserably. Instead of the average player connecting with the developers we have a window into how one sided decision making works. If those devs showcased on that show would stand up more and not just tell the other players there want they want to hear it’d be fair. I say if you want constructive, non-biased feedback you actively look for it on the forums. Believe it or not, any serious discussion on the matters at hand benefits from having more perspective than 4 players. This “Core Member” concept failed miserably with Warhammer Online as well, and I don’t have to tell you what happened there years ago.
Ever wondered why your favourite skill/trait class got nerfed/buffed, moved around?
Well, its influenced by SOTG (State of the game) meetings between 2 devs and 4 players.
However, having watched several of them, it has several flaws that should be addressed…
1) Not all 8 classes are represented. Some classes in particular like the Ranger, Necro for example never have a voice because no one plays that class…so anything the devs say, the players say nothing on because lets face it they don’t main them classes so are not interested…
I think the format should be changed so its 2 devs + 8 players, with 1 player having as there main each class, so all 8 are represented…this would help balance more and avoid a particular class getting unfairly nerfed…
2) All the players are top tpvp players, so all the changes just revolve around tPvP play, with little to no thought about the effect in PvE & WvW which the VAST MAJORITY of the GW2 player base play…
More thought needs to be paid to the effects of those changes in PvE and WvW.
3) Top end tPvP is a million miles away from the way 99% of GW2 players play the game, should those players really have so much input into skills/traits? Especially, as the 99% via gem store purchases probably pay all the bills atm…
I think this very much deserves to discussed…
There is no “top end PvE players”. PvE is beyond easy in this game. The only difference between someone running FoTM 10 and FoTM 50 is agony resist (literally the only difference is gear). PvE just needs to be balanced separately, but that requires work.

Well, I disagree…
GW2 can be split into 3 main areas, PvE, PvP & WvW. I think top end players exist in all 3 types of play and if you took a specialist top end player from either of the other 2 formats and pitted them against the top end specialist in there field, it would be the specialist top end player in there own field that would beat the other 2 every time…
In PvE for example some top end players are…
1) Those who effectively control or have huge influence on the in game economy, typically have gold in the 10,000’s, control the price of various high end TP goods.
2) Dungeon/fractal runners, can complete dungeon super fast, sometime naked except for a weapon just for a laugh…
3) Collectors have every mini, townclothes, best looking characters, multiple outfits, all the most sort after items. The top end fashion PvE player.
4) JP top end PvE player, can do jumping puzzles under a speed buff, faster than you can complete 1 game of tPvP.
Where can I watch these SOTGs?
tbh it’s a horrible show. Boring guests, boring discussions, just useful for hints on the upcoming changes.
I’m surprised there isn’t a better gw2 podcast (and no, guildcast isn’t), with rotating (and possibly more charismatic) guests, talking about everything and not just spvp :\
spvp focused discussion when it’s the weakest aspect of the game. Let them have it, they need it… poor spvp players under the delusion they might still get an esport.
Maguuma
When I go into WvW all I see is Necros, Im not sure where Necros are under represented? Engineers need some love. Rangers can just go into the useless pile.

But, the problem is all the PvE & WvW players get effected by the class balance changes that come out of the SOTG and we have NO say in it…
It is like the USA & Russia & China meeting to choose who gets the Falkland Islands but the UK and Argentina can’t have any input whatsoever…
A weird example but you get the idea…

That’s a complete Lie (and “Gear Up”? Who wants PvP based on gearscore?)
Even in Guildwars1 which was intended from the start to focus on PvP, most of them never stuck around. …Most of them were ‘too high maintenance", demanded too much, or just plain left for the next newest PvP title to come along. Maybe the ones that stayed around played more than the vast majority of casuals, RA’ers, FA/JQ’ers, and anyone else who didn’t qualify for GVG & TA … but they only made up a sliver of the actual players and accounts. The only popular MMO you can claim is all about PvP’ers, is Planetside b/c there’s literally nothing else aside from Turret farming that gives XP from the environment.

Good Point. In my experience, the players who favor PvE are more loyal to a franchise than the new PvP crowd. This is coming from a man who played DAoC and Warhammer Online Religiously over the past decade. Games that cater too heavily to the PvP crowd tend to do themselves in faster that anything I’ve seen. Depending too heavily on “Core Testers” is something that has been detrimental to the development process for far too long.
First and foremost, however, ArenaNet needs to sit don’t and re-evaluate which role each class was intended to serve. As of now, some classes serve no real role. That’s the problem I’d start with first.

Your first point has a… well.. a point.
Your second doesnt because balance within spvp and wvw/pve are seperated. State of the game is there because only high end spvp players know the spvp meta game inside and out – where as thousands of players understand the meta for wvw and spvp and the pure data can act as a players voice.
thirdly, again irellevant as spvp is seperate, therefore should deserve a seperate feature. Well known pros have to be included as thats what spvp players aspire to be. With the push on esports it wouldnt make sense if you had a show that all quality of spvp players repped.
