Steam Overlay?
I get the same results you do when I add it as a non steam game but recently my comp started crashing and even blue screening when I run GW2 via steam. If I run it outside of steam everything is fine. So I stopped running it as a non steam game.
I have had no problem…..hmmm( how can I make my post productive lol).
Try making a shortcut for GW2, opening properties on the shortcut, adding " -repair"( space included) to the end of your target bar ( ex C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -repair") then run. ( this step should help spacerobot fix his problem with blue screen, but it can’t hurt waker either since the gamefiles could be corrupting the overlay integration)
Then both should be able to: Remove GW2 from your steam library, go to add game to library and select GW2. It is important to change the Screen Capture button and the overlay access button because the game uses the buttons for something else currently.( this might be all waker has to do)
Hope this helps, if not sorry for wasting your time and maybe you can contact steam with your issue; they are very helpful and I can verify it is possible to get it working.

I’ve found recently that non-Steam games have a tendency to drop out your library quite frequently, but I’ve also found that pinning them as a favourite in the Steam right-click quicklaunch seems to prevent this.
Just in case you don’t use Steam the same way I do, I launch GW2 (and all recently played or favourite Steam games) by right-clicking Steam’s quicklaunch icon in my taskbar and clicking GW2. I’ve pinned it to be permanent by clicking the pin to the right of the game in the list.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I added it as a non steam game the day the game launched and haven’t had any issue with the overlay or anything at all.
@Mungrul, i used to have that issue a while back but haven’t had it happen at all in the past few months.
^ Same. On all counts.
I installed Fallout 3 from disk and it would randomly drop off the menu but hasn’t in awhile, and I haven’t played it in quite some time now.
Also awhile back with the same game, steam overlay just wouldn’t work. The game ran fine and so did steam, it just would never bring up the overlay. Then one day it just decided to work.
Never had a problem with anything since then.

I too haven’t had an issue with Steam overlay. I would double check your settings, maybe you have it turned off? Is it working in other games?
Steam overlay works for me. The only problem I have is it doesn’t save my window settings each time I reboot gw2. Kind of annoying but I don’t think it’s anything Anet can fix.
works fine for me.

Oh my god! Thank you! It’s working now!
I used the repair shortcut It didn’t download anything but it’s allways good to make sure. Then I went on steam options changed the shortcut to the overlay to Shift+Ctrl+Tab and removed the screenshot button.
Once I got in game it started working I change the overlay back to Shift+Tab and the screenshot button is F10 because so far doesn’t have a function in the game. Thank you so much!!
I hate Steam and having games associated with it, it causes far more problems than any benefit I can see to using it. I have no idea why anyone likes associating their games with such a subpar service.

Many people value the benefits it gives (overlay, game hubs, screenshot uploads, synch between computers) over the issues it sometimes has.
Some also think that it’s handy to have a group of friends there and always see what everyone is playing.
I rarely have issues with Steam and I’ve used it for years.
With that said I don’t usually tie games to it unless I bought them off Steam.
