Sticky target option
Dude what kills me is that you can target with right- mouse click, drives me up the wall! I lose my target all the time because of this, or I end up always target an ally when I try to cast a dmg spell.
I control my camera with right mouse, so when I use a ground targeted spell I have to let off right mouse to target the area with my mouse, but then when I press right mouse to control my camera again then it selects a different target then I prev had which drives me kittens!!!!
This is so elementary and really needs to be fixed!
I had to log in to agree with you on this :P
I’ve been having the same issues for a while, especially when you want to specifically target one person in a group, it seems AoE is king because it doesn’t suffer from this.
I am currently running a build with a mix of single target and AoE but it seems most of the time my single target abilities are wasted because I lose the lock on people.
Ever try the auto target and have it focus on all the necros minions before you get the necro now thats fun.
There’s time where I will have to purposely stare very closely at my mouse and make sure my mouse is on safe spot on the screen before I can press and hold right mouse again.
In a Zerg, fml!
I’ve died so many times because of this annoyance….
Why would you even implement right mouse to target when you have to press it to control your camera, when left mouse already targets just as it should and how it has been on basically every other MMO?
Have you tried unchecking the right click to attack/interact in options?

so that’s why every time in wvw I end up targeting a wall when fighting -_-

Even when this option is disabled, I still end up clicking allies and dead enemies (why are they still targetable? they’re dead!). I hate relying on tab targetting/auto target cuz it never picks up the target that I want. What sucks is the sticky target option is sorta there, but you have to be in a group to utilize it.

That right click option was newly implemented and i suffered from it to when i returned from a hiatus and thought i was having mouse issues for the first time ever buuuuut i ticked it off and i was kay…starting to think you have targetting issues cause you inexperienced.

Let’s not shy away from the issues I posted. They’re very present and they’re very annoying. These are things that should of been addressed in beta.
Also the Right click disable to target is very annoying how they added it to the game. Good games make it so right click does not target enemies, But lets you talk to NPCs with right click. This leads to a even more clunky feeling UI when you turn it off. It fixes one small problem but leads to others.

I suggested way back in Beta they add what i call Lock-on-Target option, just like in GW1.
The problem in this game (unlike in gw1 where there was a collision and enemies could not pass thru you) in gw2 they can, or they go behind you, while at the same time, many skills have been changed since launch where u basically have to face the target to cast, so u end up loosing your mark that way as well. I was disappointed with these changes as i think it’s going backwards rather than forward imo.
I say that because, aside from typical rooted play, Lotro has such a pedantic ‘must face target’ casting, while enemy AI is designed to always go behind you and it’s enough to drive you crazy.
But just the sheer ability to move while casting, at least for me, outweighs this issue in gw2. However, targeting system is a big problem and really should be seriously addressed. Lets face it we fight all the time and it’s one of those things if it’s not working right it becomes a constant annoyance and rather than enjoying the game and the amazing combat system u end up feeling frustrated.
At least give players an option to lock on target and those who don’t want to use it don’t have to. I’ve seen tons of complaints about this and they won’t go away untill this is addressed and i think it should be done sooner rather than later.

Nah I actually didn’t have any problems until I switched to left click targetting and dead enemies with negative health suddenly becoming clickable. If you ever tried to target stuff during a balthazar escort while everyone and everything around you is invisible, and your frame rate is <20, you’ll know what I mean.

It really does need to be addressed. i was complaining about this on launch. I just came back a week ago after quitting because of optimization issues from launch. Some are fixed but some things are still poorly designed.
I can’t believe this has yet to be fixed. Just blows my mind. Even bad MMOs have this feature.
It seriously can’t be that hard to change. It would also make the game feel 100% better. I get very annoyed when i’m trying to kill mobs and I detarget my target. it’s just something you shouldn’t have to deal with.

ok sorry just trying to help where possible , hopefully you guys get the fix you require. best of luck
Bump, please this needs looked into. No reason this has not be addressed yet.
You guys might want to look up “Combat Mode”, which is a program that enables an STO-like “shooter mode” button, which when activated gives you a Mass Effect like control scheme, where the cursor is replaced by a fixed-centre target reticle and mouse movement aims with the camera (Freeing up the mouse for genuinely useful buttons like dodge and primary attack)
I won’t link it here as it exists in something of a grey area being a 3rd party program, but at the same time does not violate the “1 click = 1 click” rule and nobody to my knowledge has ever been banned or infracted for using it.

Inc retroactive bans for those that use it.
But yeah. We need some thing like this as standard.
OMG dude this is totaly fail in PVP when i wanna burst some one and for no reason my targeth was removed and im using the skills in empty AIR this was reqested since day one they dont care about its not giving them profit :P
on down left’right mouse to move, tab to target .-.
The problem is not that right-click targetting exists, but the way the game attempts to discern between right-click and right-drag. Generally speaking, it should only consider it clicked if the button is released within a certain fraction of a second, otherwise the player is dragging the camera with the mouse. At the moment, the game is too lenient in assuming the user wanted to click when indeed they are trying to drag.

it seems that way which is really sad.
Does anyone still experience an issue where their target sometimes drops or switches to a nearby ally seemingly at random? It seems to happen to my elementalist a lot when using staff. I will literally not touch any of my mouse buttons and my target will switch on its own. It’s difficult to discern when this happens due to the intensity of combat, but after countless times finding myself attacking an ally, I decided to pay closer attention to what was happening. It used to happen every 5 minutes, but seems to have lessened lately, though it hasn’t fully gone away.

In essence, GW2 is a action RPG with traditional MMORPG controls. Just about every MMORPG out there use right click as a interact. Door, switches, npcs, you right click it you interract with it.
The problem is that unlike traditional games where you can set a camera once and not move it again for most of the fight, GW2 require near constant camera changes because of its action (movement) oriented combat. And so you get very rapid press, move, release sequences. And the way the game tells a move from a click is by timing how long the button is held down. And as best i can tell, that timer seems to be influenced by your FPS. Higher FPS, less likely that a accidental click happens. Lower FPS, like say when dealing with a zerg or a world boss event, and it happens more frequently.
Notice that two prominent games of the action oriented kind, TERA and Neverwinter, use a constant camera look unless a toggle key is hit to access the interface. One claim is that Arenanet can’t do this because of some strong language from the company that developed TERA.
I rarely have this problem. I did for a little bit but then I turned Auto-Target off.
Now I use Tab to Target the closest enemy and when fighting.. I don’t click into the madness unless it’s an AOE. I hit my number skills ie. 1,2,3,4 or I click the skill on the skill bar. The less clicking in the battle area the better IMO.
