I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be the security option. I’m saying just ask me ONCE to enable the extra layer, then leave it be. Harassing players who don’t every time they login is irritating. Making the option to “Ask Me Again” when the only other option is to enable it, is ridiculous. That’s not really an option. It’s a rule. The button for the ask me again is subdued too, which is another lame marketing gimmick. Anet, less big brother, more game please.

You don’t need to give them a phone-number. As pointed out both earlier in this thread and to you in another thread that was linked there are other options.

I have 2-step authentication and I have never given them my phone number.

You might not be risking other’s accounts but you are very much risking our enjoyment by risking getting hacked and used for gold-spamming and/or hacking.

We get posts like the OP’s and then to balance it we get posts like.

Help. I just randomly got a text from GW2 Authenicator giving me a code to log in but I never even tried to log in at the time, and I have it “remembered” or whatever on my PC. Should I be worried or is it their system just going weird?

Not everyone is computer savvy about their passwords and computer security. ANet can’t tell if you are or are not knowledgeable OP, and each hacked account costs them money in Support costs. To ask them to remove it is for them to accept increased costs due to all the people who aren’t computer secure and would refuse an Authenicator because getting hacked only happens to the other guy.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

This.

It also hurts the game’s economy, which in turn hurts every player. The items they sold on the trading post to liquidate into gold? They get duplicated.

It’s not very difficult to say remind me later and it only comes up every 5th time you log in.

You can also get something like WinAuth or the Google Authenticator to get rid of it and not give anyone your phone number.

I haven’t signed up for it either, myself.

But it’s honestly not worth complaining about the notification. It’s just one click every few times you log on.
It’s much more annoying to have to confirm my login attempts from time to time since I have dynamic IP. But even that is just, open email, click link, done.

It just doesn’t make sense to harass me when I’ve already made up my mind. If it’s that critical that they get everyone on-board, then require it. I will go play another game. If it’s not critical, stop harassing me. Seems simple.

I don’t like third party authenticators. If the game can’t make it secure, then spreading my personal info and relationships won’t make things better. Privacy vs Security is not a fair trade-off to me. Some people don’t care about that. Great. I do.

It makes sense to harass you because your choice to be less secure means a higher chance that the economy will be hurt as well as their bottom line due to increased support needs. Both of which are bad for the game as a whole.

So will you agree to pay the increased support costs that a “do not remind again” button will bring? You’ll agree to pay every player that has SMS or an authenticator for the inflation that hacked accounts create? Because I care. I don’t want to pay more for future expansion packs or for future gem purchases or for future items in the gem store. I don’t want to pay more on the TP for items due to inflation.

What I think that ANet should offer to people who don’t want to use the non phone Authenicator is an agreement that if hacked, before support restores their account, they they will pay supports costs to get their account back and do the account rollback to replace deleted chars and items. That way you can play without having the “harrassment” of having to click that button and ANet doesn’t have to pay the costs of people who refuse the security and then get hacked.

Here is just one of the official responses to your concern:

Gaile Gray

ArenaNet Forum Communications Team Lead

I learned that we’re asking not every log-in, but every fifth time or so. For most people, that means they’re being asked about once a week.

SMS is a highly desirable feature that we strongly encourage every eligible person to take advantage of. There are no plans to allow a complete removal of the reminder, but I’m told you can hit play directly and not deal with the reminder at all. The team will review feedback and may consider changes to the frequency at a later date. Their priorities are on other things right now, but they may visit this in the future.

It’s a phone number.. Not like they’re asking for your social security number or password for your bank account.

The phone company knows your number? can you assure it’s safe there if even the Federal government can’t keep its information safe?

This is funny because if you worry about phone number. I use SMS on many online account. Never do I get a spam call or worry about. It is against law in most country to use information for bad thing. If you worry about private arena net already know much information. They know when play where play from and if you ever buy gem they have pay information. They have you email address also. So phone number should be least worry. But you can complain all want. You can also use authenticate without phone like many already talk about. Or you can cry and say arena net evil for ask me secure my account. Account that is stolen cause more problem for everyone like other say also.

I set up the SMS security thing with my cell phone. So far I have only gotten one text message from them and that was the code needed to complete the SMS account security. It’s not like they are going to call you and ask you if you want to buy stuff or sell your phone number to someone else. They are just trying to help you keep your account secure.

Did our devs develops the authenicators and the SMS? I though they were developed years ago by other people? Now it’s the people who are “smart enough” to believe they will never be hacked and who are “smart enough” to refuse to use an Authenicator who are getting hacked and costing the game money.

Fail comparison is fail.

I’m not technology inept to the point I can’t keep my computer and accounts uncompromised. But even the most tech savvy person can end up with things compromised. Because new viruses are developed and new means of distributing them are developed. Heck, my brother used to work for a retail office supply store as a tech and literally watched as the tech support person who was remote accessing the computer click on an ad pop up and gave the computer a virus. So even people who know better make mistakes.

No new password. With the authenticator, you have to set it up once and enter a code from it once, then it will only ask for a new code again if you change PCs or your IP goes to a different subnet.
For my dynamic IP, all that changes is the last number and it allows that entire range without a new code. ie xx.xx.xx.1-255 is allowed.

No, since you are actively risking the enjoyment of others by refusing to secure your account they should ask you to do it every time.

So you’re saying that hackers/gold-spammers are everywhere and adversely affecting and taking enjoyment out of the game for everyone? Do you have the statistics to back these statements up, because in the 10 years I’ve played GW1 & 2 without added security bots/spammers have never been a problem and most people still seem happy.

I don’t think using people’s subjective state of minds is a valid argument for forcing things onto others, especially when we have a report function already set up and working just fine.

It also hurts the game’s economy, which in turn hurts every player. The items they sold on the trading post to liquidate into gold? They get duplicated.

If they can roll-back a players account they should also be able to roll back any duplicated items or damage caused from hacked accounts. So the economy argument isn’t really valid, especially given we do not and never will have the statistics to back it up…

The companies have always paid for these types of things so what’s the need to change it now? It would be priced in and paid by the customer anyway as a part of business, and it could also be argued that the expansion is over-priced and already paying for it.

Showing customer loyalty and giving people CHOICE (opt-out) is what creates happy customers and a WIN-WIN scenario for all involved.

You’re funny if you think that they can easily reverse the sales from items from hacked accounts. Let’s say that one hacked account had 5000 mithril ores sold. These were bought and used by people who crafted items with them and then either sold, salvaged, used or mystic forged the crafted items. What’s ANet supposed to do, go chasing after all these crafted items? And that’s just one ore.

And you must of missed the beginning of this game. There were a LOT of bots.

They don’t take away items that were sold to other players from those other players. Since they are completely innocent in the matter. They don’t want to make people scared to buy things on the TP in case it came from a hacked account. How would like to get a legendary and equip it and then find it taken from you? Or your full set of ascended armor taken because you bought silk that had come from a hacked account.

ANet doesn’t want to make innocent players be punished due to gold sellers. So they just duplicate the items.
