Hi
Well this is about classes. A month or so I said here that I was looking for a main character and that I had some option. After I’ve tried some of those option I keep coming back to the same, Elementalist or Guardian. Guardian is already off the table because I can’t play with the weapons I want for being week with the class (1h-sword) so this one is not in the option as the “Main” anymore.
Now you may think that the option was easy because I’ve only the Elementalist but there is a problem. I’ve a thief now and I got to say, I like it so far but as it isn’t at 80 yet I can’t judge it properly compared to the Thief.

To be more precise I think I’m not looking for a class but more for a Style of playing MMO’s because the classes I have more difficult with to choose are the one that are present in most MMO’s (Thief as the Rougue/Assassin, Elementalist as the Mage and Guardian as the Tank). I know GW2 is different, I’ve been playing this since lauch but the problem maintains and I got to say this problem made me quit other MMO’s before, I just don’t want that to happen again because I really love GW2.

So Elementalist or Thief? What are your advices in what I should focus from both classes/styles to decide what suit best for me? In what have you based when you picked your class?

so you won’t play guardian because you can’t play with a 1h sword…but i didn’t think ele’s could use 1h swords

anyways…if you really like 1h swords, the mesmer has a pretty good build around 1h sword/pistol i believe

No kitten Sherlock, Ele’s can’t really use 1h sword?
AS far as I know I’ve said 1h sword in the Guardian, so I wanted them in the kitteng Guardian not in Mesmers, beside I don’t even want to be a Mesmer.

You might want to consider checking out a Mesmer.

Don’t limit yourself to certain professions. I have one of every but I never feel like I even put my heart into my Warrior or Guardian, they are just alt’s as my main I feel most connected with is my Necro. But that’s just me and 5 years of GW1 slavery talking.

@Arkham. Guardian’s can use 1 handed Swords, however it’s not considered very good and that’s why he doesn’t want it to be his main due to the weapon set he likes without feeling lesser when using other weapon sets.

@mPascoal. Didn’t have to go after Jordo like that. He thought you were looking for a class that would be effective with a 1 handed sword

Now, for my reply. To be honest I don’t think you mentioned what style of play you’re looking for. Both Thief and Elementalist require alot of evasion and skillful play to stay alive. Thief has a bit more damage I’d say but Elementalist has more support. They’re both fun but I like Thief just a little bit better

You are right I shoundn’t gone to Jordo like that, but this problem keep’s poping up in my head and I wated to solve it as soon as I can so I can enjoy GW2 and other MMO’s. I still play with the Guardian occasionally with a Hammer Suport build but I don’t like it that much because it’s not how I would like to play it.
Anyway I’m not really asking for a class to pick I’m asking is in what did you based your choise when you picked your “main” character? Have you ever played with that style of character in MMO’s? Please share you experiences I think it will help me because I know the classes I want now I don’t know which one I should focus more time and effort (I mean I will get Ascended to all character problably but I will get Ascended to my main first, and I will try more than one build with my main and do the event with my main that kinda of stuff you see)

If you are gonna restrict what profession you play based on cosmetic reasons (dont want a guardian because the 1h sword is weak), might as well play a different game.

You got to identify what profession offers the skillsets/abilities that you enjoy the most, and then make the most out of the resulting cosmetic aspect.

I leveled all 8 professions to 80 before finally identifying my preferred ones, and my best loved char is my engineer, which has kitten poor cosmetic customization control, what with the hobo sack and toolkits overriding weapons look. But it is still the one I prefer to play, so I make do with what I have.

You say you identified two possibilities, ele and thief. Why not level them both to 80 then, and see for yourself.

All I can say is those are 2 professions I do not like all that much. I dont like the ele being stuck with basically 1 weapon range at a time (no weapon swap). And I dont like much all this stealthing gimmicky play of the thief, so I made mine in a glass cannon dual pistol that I use from time time to time in open world events.

I chose my main (Engineer) because I liked the very active style of play: constantly swapping kits, dodging, using fun gadgets, etc. Also, it’s a very versatile class, so I can choose to play at range, close up, straight-dps, team support, bunker, etc. That’s how I chose my main. I wanted versatility and an active playstyle.

If you want to play 1h sword Guardian because it’s fun, play it. Play whatever makes you happy, not what’s popular.

I found Ranger & Guardian & Warrior to be very 1-note. My opinion, but they were fun for a little while but then got stale.

Tell us exactly what you’re after, we can help you figure out some professions and even builds to cater to that.

…But Guardian can use a 1H sword and they’re quite good at it…

That said, I don’t get these posts. How are we supposed to know what you want? Try everything. There are only 8 characters, making a new one is free and quick, and you can try everything in PvP as a full lvl 80 from the start. The Wiki tells you who can use what, and what their skills are, and you can browse forums and watch streams for examples of gameplay. We can’t do anything else for you. You need to decide what you like. Or just do like most people (apparently) and have one of everything. It’s not that complicated.

I’d recommend a mesmer or warrior or thief… one hand sword is very much viable for all three classes. You’ll most likely want to sword and board on the warrior but keep in mind that the only ‘viable’ build for warrior right now involves longbow as the swap weapon.

I’d recommend giving guardian a try with Silven’s meditation build except swap out 1-h mace for 1-h sword. It won’t be as much of a burst but it will definitely help you maintain pressure + gap closer.

Just my tidbit.

I’ve never been able to find the “one”. That’s probably why I have all the professions at 80 and rotate professions (and builds) I play at least every two weeks. This is an alternative (no pun intended) approach that may help those looking for the “one”.

Hum
Well I like damage, but I don’t like being a Glass Cannon so I end up almost everytime getting something that is more of an hybrid than a damage character.
Idk how good I am at Support in this game because nobody ever told me but as Cleric in other MMO’s I did quite good (but I also know that is a really different support than the support of GW2). Saying this you may think Thief isn’t for me but I also like to be a sneaky guy sometimes.
I have no preference between close and range combat although I think range is more easy.

I’ve only looked more for 2 classes, Guardian and Elementalist because those two is the ones that I have at 80.
Knowing what I’ve told you, wich of the 8 class do you recomend since most of you know more about the other 6 than I do.
