Hi! I bought GW2 at launch. I’ve tried getting into it 3-4 times every few months since then, but no class has ‘clicked’ with me yet.

I’m looking for a class that can solo well and is fun to do map completion with, while also being desired at endgame for dungeon runs or whatever it is that people do at endgame here.

I have played a warrior to about 30, a guardian to about 25, ranger and engineer to about 20. Warrior had too many “instant win” buttons but was still my favorite due to ease of soloing. I liked Guardian too but I just find paladin-ish classes conceptually boring. Engineer is conceptually really interesting to me, but I felt so incredibly underpowered, and it was frustrating having to try five times as hard to do things other classes could do easily. And though I can’t quite put my finger on it, Ranger was really dull.

I guess I could go with Warrior again, but I was wondering if there are any other classes that fit my criteria – fun to map complete with but also desired in endgame. Thanks!

the most desired classes for “endgame” dungeons are Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist and Mesmer, Thieves and Engineers are situational and most pugs avoid them while Rangers and Necromancers are very undesirable.

There are so many things wrong with this post.

First of all, there is no endgame, since your level changes to match the level of the content you play, so if you’ve never been to Charr starting areas with your lv80 Sylvari, you can go there and enjoy it with matched level.

Then, dungeons is not endgame. The gear you can get from them is endgame (if we don’t count ascended tier), but the same gear can be acquired from either Orr temples or the trading post.

Where your personal skills and acquired gear really matter, is a magical place of WvW. That is endgame – not for me, but objectively for everyone.

Nah, he is right.

On a side note, if tough leveling is not your pair of shoes, avoid the mesmer.

It sounds like u wanna play engineer most. You should stick it with it for a while if its that interesting for you. As for having not enough damage, ill say that’s not quite true. We can have some pretty amazing damage but your not high enough level yet to fully have access to our main traits and skills for damage. Also try bombs for leveling.

Like penguin said engineer sounds the most interesting to you so far. Aside from feeling underpowered, it’s still very early on in the game at a low level. But as you unlock more stuff such as kits, turrets, other utilities like rocket boots and slick shoes you’ll have more fun with it I can guarantee. I thought the same way when I used elementalist as I was leveling up, but after having all my professions at level 80, elementalist is so much fun to play for me. So just keep pushing forward and see if you enjoy it more. It isn’t a race to get to max level anyway ^^

My advice is to make a character of every profession and go PvP with them. That way you can try out all their skills and traits to get a feel of the gameplay.
From your description I would have suggested Guardian as it is easy to solo with but also valued in every aspect of the game. Though i do appreciate that it may not be the most conceptually original design. Don’t think of the guardian as the paladin-type though, there are some really great utilities at your disposal as a class and I wonder if you were able to appreciate them all if you stopped at 25. Anet is also planning to expand the use of all weapons to all classes (though who knows when). This means that the Guardian will have lots of different gameplay options open to the class – on top of the versatility that it has at the moment. It is also the most stable class in the game, whereas the Warrior, for example, often fluctuates between being OPed and getting nerfed. There is also a spirit weapons buff coming up (supposedly) in a patch soon. This is a similar gameplay mechanic to engineers and may be fun to play around with (though probably still not viable just yet).
But remember – all professions can do everything equally once you hit 80 (supposedly). So just play what you enjoy the most

The reason why I put it into quotations is because I don’t actually believe it to be “endgame” and as you said, you can play those dungeons at any level, the only thing that matters is your skill, the reason being I wanted to answer OP’s question, and as a general rule (and thus most consistent estimator) those are the most desired classes and those others are the least desired classes.

In general…

If you want lots of health = Warrior
If you want to be very fast = Warrior
If you want to tank = Warrior
If you want to be very mobile = Warrior
If you want to do tons of damage = Warrior

Mesmer started off slow for me – takes a long time for their builds to gel, but once you get to 30 or so they become very pleasant to play and continue to pay off for a long time. Just expect the 10-24 level range to be strangely awful .

You can do map complete with anything(I have on guard, warr, thief & necro personally). It’ll go down to what your idea of fun is.

As for being desired end game, which people do you want to desire you? The typical people ingame will prefer warriors, but if you run in an organized group/friends regularly you will find that you only need 1-2 in a party.

For personal preference after we have 1-2 warriors we prefer a good thief/ranger/ele/engi or if reflects can make content faster we’ll go with a guard or mesmer.

Again this is just personal preference, you will encounter alot of people who will want all warriors in a party because that’s the easiest to play to be somewhat effective and poses the least risky class to party with.

You’re wrong, he’s right. High level fracts don’t want Necros or Rangers.

I know how you feel OP, I hop from class to class because this game has a lot of limits of how to customize your character via skills. Just play around with them all until one feels right.

Having played an elementalist, this is dead-on. I HATED every stinking minute up to the mid-60’s, maybe? She’s now my main. Besides the fast-paced play style (Dagger/Dagger), I liked the complexity of learning what element and skill to combine with another in rapid succession.

The engineer is close to that with kit choices,

I’m 65 engie now, though, so I’m just getting to the point where he might be a close second… or surpass the ele, we’ll see.

I don’t think necro is desired in PvE dungeons but in WvW, sPvP and open world PvE they are great.
