well you used to miss out before and never have any chance to it again.
Also it is so hard to log in (or get someone to log in for you) once every 2 weeks? you dont have to play the content.

Quite frankly, yes it is especially for someone that isn’t actively playing or focusing on the game currently. I haven’t thought about GW2 in a few weeks at least. I saw an ad for it on a gaming site and figured Id log into the GW2 site to check it out and see whats up. Had I done this in the LS, Id miss out on content.
So…I mean I hate to bring it up again, but is Arenanet moving even further away from their notion of “you can take a break from the game a come back” ? If I take a break, I miss out on all of this stuff unless I spend real money on it.
…Are you implying missing out on the content entirely after the 2 weeks were up was closer to that notion?

Again, you used to miss out anyway.
At least now you don’t have to play the content, all you have to is log in once every 2 weeks.
they’re basically giving the option log in when it’s out or pay for it… but it’s all permanent. If anything it’s a step up from Ls1 and nothing to complain about.
Pretend it’s an expansion or DLC, if you cant bare to log in twice a month.
Hi,
So if I read Colin’s writeup about the story journal correctly…We have to log in during the 2 week time frame that the LS episode takes place in order to have access to it perma. If we don’t we have to spend 200 gems to gain access to this content.

Contrasting to a sub-based game for comparison only, I have access to all content patches, zones, dallies, quest hubs, raids, dungeons, etc…
Is it a technical reason that they went this route? Or greed? I currently am not playing the game because im having a blast in Wildstar, but if I ever wanted to come back and catch up on the living story, I am SoL unless I dish out real $$. Seems pretty lame to me
Quite upset about this.
Hmm, you get two weeks to log in to download a patch. 14 days to do something that takes only 5min (obviously longer if you have a poor connection).
As for a sub based comparison, regardless of whether you want access to that content or not, you still fork out the cash. The company has chosen for you that you will have this content like it or not and you will have to pay for it.
With the journal, if you’re not fussed about not having certain parts of the story then you don’t have to pay for it. 200 gems is what..20g at the moment? And you don’t even have to pay $$ for it. That’s at most 2 days of dungeon running.
Anet has given players the option of exchanging in game money or real world money to purchase older content as opposed to limiting you to only real world money as in a sub. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal

But thats my point. When LS was released, the fact that we would miss LS content if we werent around for it could be chaulked up to an oversight. Something they forgot to think about.
Now, it is a decision they made..a design decision. “Hmmm, make them pay for it if they dont log in”.
Meanwhile, and im not necessarily saying sub based games are better because I very much support/supported the gem store in GW2, but in sub games you pay the sub and have access to EVERYTHING, even things in prior years..regardless if you logged in for it or not.

Seriously?
before it wasn’t an oversight, it was temporary content and that was that.
It’s still cheaper than a sub game, so chill out, and log in twice a month if you want it free, it’s not like you don’t have any access to it.
Overreacting for nothing.
Or of course you want to leave the game for 6 months and get all the content free regardless eh?

Why the hell are you upset about this now?
The whole game up until release had content that disappeared after 2-4 weeks.
Now they give you the option that if you want this content permanently, you can log-in for one second and get it permanently. If you do not, then treat it like it was before.
If anything you should be happy that they have given the option to getting permanent content. Before that was NEVER possible.
Seriously, this is just complaining for the sake of complaining.
Or its a strategical business move to keep their “player concurrency” numbers up by encouraging us to log in once every two weeks so they can look good in front of cameras.
Well I would agree with you if it were say, 2000 gems.
But at 200 gems, it translates to a lil over 20 gold. If all temporary content can be accessed with it, I could live with that. Not downplaying it, but I really think this is a fair price to pay.

But that is the point. That is why they are doing it this way. To keep you thinking about the game. To have you keep the game installed on your computer. So that one day randomly when you login just to unlock the episode you will play for a bit longer. Don’t want to think about the game for a while. Going to be gone. They understand stuff happens. Unlock the game with gems. Don’t have money. Play the game for a while earn some gold unlock the episode with gems via gold.

Yeah, this is pretty much greed.
This isn’t really about getting money out of old players that drifted off, though. If they didn’t care enough to log in every two weeks, odds are they don’t care enough to pay for the missed content.
Instead, this targets two other groups. The first is the dedicated player that was unable to play for those 2 weeks. Family vacation? Hospital stay? Computer broke down and can’t get it fixed right away? Time to cough up some gems to get what you missed.
The second target group is new players. This is basically a way to make them pay for the living story up to the point where they’ve joined. You can bet that, with this system in place, they’ll make it even MORE important that you play all the previous parts of a story to have fun with what’s going on right now. It may be with how they write the story, or it may be that doing task A requires item B that was in the story a month ago. So, if you want to open that new version of the tri-colored chest, you need to buy the old story parts to earn keys. Call it a reward easily earned by those that have been loyal players, and most of the GW2 community will blindly support it and call it a good use of the replay feature.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Or its a strategical business move to keep their “player concurrency” numbers up by encouraging us to log in once every two weeks so they can look good in front of cameras.
Wouldn’t work under close scrutiny, since you’d most likely see a massive drop in the days after the patch releases if all people were doing was logging in to get the patch for free.
I mean, I’m not seeing the issue. Not only are they giving the patch for free if you log in for a minute in 2 weeks, but you can also choose to buy the content you want with either real money or in-game gold, whereas with a sub you have to fork over the sub cost (and the box cost if an expac has been released) regardless of what bits of content you want to play.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
