I don’t know how so many people are defending this gameplay choice because it really is infuriating. You’re running forward just fine, then you wanna circle around a boss/mob while still facing the thing, so you hold “A”, “D”, “Q”, or “E” and all of a sudden, you’re moving at half speed… HALF! It feels like the guys trudging through slime, it slows the gameplay absolutely needlessly, and is simply counter to what other successful games have done (yes WoW is a good example of a successful game that does movement right, get over it).

To top it off, the people who defend this movement system say things like “well YOU try strafing and see if you can match your top forward running speed.” The problem is, look at your character when they so-called “strafe”. Pay close attention to HOW they “strafe”. It’s not strafing… it’s running forward while the camera and the character’s head is facing left or right. Tell me that you can’t run straight while kittening your head to one side and match your speed with your head facing forward. It makes no difference. Strafing is when your BODY is facing forward, not just your head, and your legs are moving you left/right.

It slows gameplay unnecessarily and is just very offputting when you’re moving around. The guy even looks like he’s just running forward in slow-motion. It makes no sense at all. I don’t think I can even hope that this will ever be changed because so many people blindly accept it for very wrong reasons.

Oh you can match the speed just fine.

And then you’ll run straight into a kittening wall because you’re not looking where you are running.

GW2 combat movement is almost perfect in every aspect and by far the best in the MMO genre in my experience (much thanks to excellent animations that give it real weight and connection to the ground). I dont think I have ever seen anyone complain about the strafing speeds in all these years. Well except this thread obviously.

I used to think the same thing op. I still kinda do. The reason for this op is to prevent kiting. In 99% of mmo’s I can turn my camera to a 90’ degree angle and still dps while kiting you as long as my camera is at 90 degrees or less.

As a long time mmo player i have used this to make kiting classes really shine. Beyond just the nerf to strafing you’ll also notice that you can’t even use many abilities at 90 degrees or even 80 degrees angled. Mesmer’s 3 skill on scepter won’t even get close to a 90 degree angle. I’d say it cancels itself at 75 degrees.

I found this really irriating but ive learned to just treat it as mechanics and deal with it. I think without these limitations I’d be able to actually kite properly on ranged builds. It would make ranged even stronger and Gw2 is built more around the idea of skirmishing.

Don’t know what to tell you. They aren’t changing it now and it would require a massive rebalance of almost every class.
