I have opened new posts that I have never read before and found whited out thumbs. This seems to indicate I agree with things I have never read. Has this happened to others?

No, this is not what I mean. I mean the red +1 is whited out. I have voted for posts before and have some posts up-voted as well, so I do understand the process.
