Good groups in PvE (dungeons) usually go for 2 eles, 1 thief, 1 war + utility class like guard or mesmer. Anything besides necro is fine, really.
In PvP, there is nothing like “strongest profession”. Everyone has great potential, it all comes down to your personal preference and skill. Good build is still important, though.

PvE (Dungeons) : Except necromancer, all profession are good, but Ele, thief and Warrior come out on top. You can also add Guardian to that list, but only if you are a pug that need some babysitting.

sPvP : All profession are in a good place with Elementalist, Engineer, Warrior and Thief being on top right now.

WvW : GWEN is the meta, Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist, Necromancer.

It all depends on who you talk to really…

@MartinusDraco

Because the lack of group buffs and group utility that other professions can do much better. I presonally love my necro in PvE and don’t run with groups that want something specific or to do dungeons in a certain way.

Why do you consider Necromancer a poor choice for PvE?

Necromancer is in the low tier in term of DPS mostly because they are build around condition build rather than power build and that condition build are not that viable in PvE.

But other profession with low tier DPS have roles in PvE like the guardian that bring damage mitigation, the mesmer that bring utilities, the warrior that bring offensive buff to the party. The necromancer bring really few of those for the party.
- they don’t bring party buff
- they don’t have utilities
- they don’t give much boons to their party
- they give vulnerability but mostly single target
- they used to give AoE Weakness which is good but that got nerfed.
- etc.

So overall, they are pretty much on the bottom of the list when it come to group PvE.

I’d say GWENV, Guardian Warrior Elementalist Necromancer and Veilbot…

Well it could be GWENVT, but Mesmer and Thief even if they almost essential in GvG have very limited role mostly as support to the zerg. And you usually only want a small amount of them.

Necro is not only built about condition dmg, and his dps is not that low, however, he doesn’t have any kind of group support that can’t be done better by other classes.
Maybe the new Addon will change that?

Considering necro’s are getting greatswords I’d say thats a clue to them getting a viable power based build.

The class addons seem to be about giving classes something they were lacking before. Rangers getting druids and staffs I’m thinking is a way to give them some viable support based skills.

Don’t worry too much about pve viability, because it really doesn’t matter.

Spvp though: one word: ENGINEER!

Disclaimer: Under no circumstance should you take this seriously.

I didn’t say that he was only build around condition dmg, but its one of his strong points, but its not good in PvE.

And ya it have a pretty low dps. He have a high burst with lich form and wells, but a pretty bad overall dps, especially since most of his hard hitting single are single target. But like I said, he have low dps if you compare him to all profession. Compare to guardian or mesmer he have decent dmg.

56030 build, lots of dodge, keep your S/P set handy for extra evades, blinds and interrupts. It certainly doens’t have the passive defense, but the plethora of active defenses it has available make it actually one of the easier professions to survive with in a lot of content.

Why do you consider Necromancer a poor choice for PvE?

I think people are talking about meta. All class bring “something” to help speed run except necro. That being said I love playing necro in pug. It is really tanky and easy to play. And I outdamage people most of the time anyway. PUG dont’ even use slaying potion.

I think necromancer is one of the best class in pug for average skilled players. But you obviously won’t want it when you are trying to break the world speed record.

elemental, warrior, engineer ==> might stacking.
thiekittentealth guardian> reflect, stability
mesmer > portal, blink, reflect time warp ranger, necro> ??? nothing

Necro Pve/Dungeons

Still think a PBAOE wellmancer would be viable for necro

3/0/5/6/0 or 6/0/2/6/0 well of blood, suffering, darkness, corruption
condi removal on self
(powerfull marks)
( 20% dmg vs ppl below 50% health)
targetable wells
(bigger marks)
transfusion
marks on dodge
choice of dagger mastery (
25% dmg) or vampiric wells (a lot of sustain)

Available conditions: bleed, poison, weakness (also aoe combo), fear, chill, blind, vulnerability, torment
Availabel buffs,regen. protection

They could use wells (in fight) and marks (prefight or through dodge) for aoe dmg, use transfusions for systain, provide protection and AOE blindness, and healing if needed via evasive marks and focus. second weapons would be dagger.

Staff Daggaer/focus, either full zerk or zealot zerk. full zerk would provide aoe 2k health on transfusion and zealot 3.5k,

for people who do run speedsruns rune of the pack on hit (which will happen due to either 100 or 250 toughnesss through traits, you’ll provide AOE might, fury and swiftness to party,, 175 power, 125 precision)
for people who don’t run speedsruns rune of dwayna (+40% regen fields, regen on healing skill and +175 healing, recieve regen when hit)

Generally If I’m allowed into speed partied with necro, they appreciate the utility, as you support guards and ele’s and can take over their support functions, on a huge health pool. And no it isn’t the most DPS. And not having the most dps doesn’t matter, as it keeps your party from wiping or nearly wiping just once, causing any time difference to be corrected. The build will do good damage due to the wells and the daggers, And it wil be versatile. And it will be substantually more viable then 6/6/0/0/2 necro.

Well GWEN is viable in dungeons as well:
Phalanx warrior might stacking during combat, vulnerability, banners & empower allies, above average DPS
Elementalist, might stacking before combat, AOE DPS, icebow, emergency healing, small life pool, highest DPS
Guardian blinds, aegis, protection, stability, wall of reflection, vulnerability, small life pool (shouldn’t be a problem though?) above average DPS
ranger, near instant 20 stacks vulnerability , & spotter, aoe heal with condi removal average DPS
mesmer, feedback, null field, timewarp (invisibility) boon stripping average DPS
thief invisibility, blasts, uber single target DPS. small life pool
necro (PB)AOE DPS: (wells, marks), (PB)AOE blinds,(PB)AOE heal, (PB)AOE protection, (PB)AOE boon stripping, (PB)AOE vulnerability. big life pool average DPS
Engineer, everything…. but all just a bit. average DPS

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Everything is viable. You just dont’ do “max damage”.

I think the meta is 6/6/0/0/2 for dagger. There is also another build which use axe and keep building life force to use death shroud.

I think I personally use 6/4/0/4/0 and sacrifice like 10% damage to become a bit tanky.

I didn’t look at your build in depth. But you might sacrifice a bit too much.

There’s guide posting by other people on the web, you can try taking a look. The thing is necro is really tanky already and you don’t need to sacrifice too much.

Why do people still think this? Engis have pretty solid damage if you execute properly. I mean Acid Bomb is the equivalent of 100blades except I don’t have to sit there and channel, I can drop a Flame Blast/detonate, Blunderbuss and a Jump shot on top of it all while the warrior would still be channeling his 100blades. After that I can add on top Freeze Grenade, Shrapnel Grenade, Grenade Barrage, swap back to Flame Blast again, finally use a grenade1 skill, then back and blunderbuss… I mean, Engis are full of some very potent damagers.

ya, I’ll just play other class and click 1 or 2 button. I’m not doing the thing shown below.

ps. I dont’ know if the video is the meta rotation. I think someone from DnT have the rotation for all the class.
