This suggestion is long and I require using multiple boxes in order to completely detail it out. I am not spamming or bumping. I’m only allowed 5,000 words and it’s simply not enough, so please pardon me.

Moas. Moas. Moas.

They’re kinda what Chocobos are to Final Fantasy and other than a few events and being an optional pet for Hunters, they don’t really have much purpose beyond populating the world as the local fauna.

But then I discovered Pygmy Moas. They’re actually kind of cute, in a way only a mother could love. I did the event where you have to heard the Moas into a pen and then escort Kappa to sell the Moas after you watch them do a dance the NPC says she trained them to do, and I thought about training little Moas and having whole bunches of them…

Then I had an idea. What if we could get the little Moas and train them through a series of events to do various things? I asked my own guild what they thought about having a looting pet and if others would go for it.

So here’s my idea (now bear with me, it’s just an idea so I’m open to suggestions/feedback):

What is this?

Moas. Moas everywhere.

There are Pygmy Moas hidden around the world of every color and style ranging from solid colors to a mix of colors, from bright to dark, to patterns and event/holiday Moas, for you to find and collect. Hidden in caves, remote places, in towns, in bushes, hanging around certain bosses or event locations, even aquatic diving Pygmy Moas that are hidden underwater. There are even rare Pygmy Moas you have to craft, like the Wooden Moa and the Golem Moa. And Sea Moas. And Ice Moas. And Marsh Moas. And Fire Moas. Moas of every kind. Even Exotic Moas that have upgrade slots where you can add a rune/sigil/gem.

These would be collectibles that aren’t a Gem Shop item and wouldn’t go into your Collectibles in your bank, but rather into your Moa Corral where you can access and enter from any of the major cities. Upon entering your Moa Corral you can view your Moas walking around, you can select which you wish to take with you, add to the corral or release back into the wild (which will go into a short cut scene of your character picking up the particular Moa and setting it free outside of your corral, watching it run off and yes, like most scenes there will be a Skip button).

When you take out a Moa it will follow you around everywhere you go. Into the mountains. Into caves. Deep underwater. Into hell and back, minus a few charred feathers here and there. A little Moa icon featuring your current Moa will appear above your skill bar, or in it’s general vicinity.

Why are you suggesting this?

Because. Moas.

Actually, as I mentioned above, I wondered if maybe we could have them serve actual purposes beyond just looking cute, and something everyone could do and enjoy that didn’t require cashing, that could be done by all professions, and could be expanded upon via there own events, missions and side-story lines. Because this is just that kind of game, and I’ve never really played a game before where I felt I could suggest events for that would actually fit right in.

What would the Moas do for me?

There are Pygmy Moas that boost stats, that heal, that buff, that loot, that gather materials, that revive fallen allies/NPC’s. There are even Moas that sing and dance for you.

Each Pygmy Moa would fall under a Type, like most things do.

  • Looters:* They pick up everything within range of the “Auto Loot” function. These will have options when you click on the Moa icon where you can select what items you want your Moa to loot (weapons, armor, collectibles, dyes, etc). Items not checked off will be ignored by your Moa. It will even have options to ignore or pick up common to rare items.
  • Buffers:* These Moas will offer up boons which will activate after certain conditions are met, and each Moa in this category has a different condition that needs to be satisfied. For example, some Moas will buff you with Fury whean a teammate near you dies or is near death. Others will buff you with Protection when your own HP falls under a certain threashold, or if you’re inflicted with a certain condition. These little guys are fickle, so it’s best to keep an eye on them. You never know what they’ll do next.
  • Boosters:* These Moas will give you stat boosts. What sort of boosts they have will depend on the Moa itself. Like there are different kinds of runes and sigils with various combinations of boosts, there will be just as many Moas with variations and combinations. There’s a Moa out there for everyone.

  • Healers/Revivers:* They heal you and/or allies. Heck, they might even save your life when you’re laying in the mud on your backside. But that’s entirely up to the little guy. But for all the times you’re not half way dead, these little guys will offer a “Regenerate Over Time”, a quick burst of HP or completely revive you/or a fallen ally. Or they might completely ignore you.
  • Gatherers:* When you’re near a resource node, your Moa will jump around and flap it’s wings. The closer you get the more excited it will become. Once you’re near the node it will begin gathering the resource for you. These will still use up a gathering tool according to the resource node. Profect them while they gather, these guys are very vulnerable to attacks, even from the local wildlife.
  • Singers:* These guys are rare, and special. These Pygmy Moas will sing a tune whenver you’re attacking a monster or being attacked, which will inflict a condition upon your target. These are PvE only. The sort of condition they inflict and the tune they sing will depend on the item you’ve equipped. You know those Junk Trophies you pick up and can only sell to NPC’s or just drop them? Don’t you wish you could just use them in some other way? Now, you can. Each Junk Trophy will have it’s own condition that will be activated upon being equipped to one of these Moas, and the strength of the condition will depend on the tier. Each Junk Trophy will have up to X number of uses before it breaks and is used up, so you’ll be able to add entire stacks to your Moa rather than just one at a time. Once the entire stack has been used up, you will need to re-equip a new stack of a Junk Trophy of your choice. You can also just re-equip them whenever you like.
  • Dancers:* When you dance, they dance too. Daaaaaw.
  • Pack Moas: These guys aren’t Pygmy Moas, but rather baby Moas that hang out in Pygmy Moa hiding spots. They will grow up to be large, adult Moas that are stronger than the Pygmy Moas. They will have slots where you can add bags and carry things for you. These Moas will have actual bags that appear saddled to their backs like a Pack Dolyaks/Bulls. They can and will die, if attacked, but will be revivable, either on spot or by choosing a Waypoint upon dying.

How will I capture these?

Purchase Pygmy Moa Bait from Kappa. She’s gotta make money somehow, right? And Pygmy Moas are her business.

Once you’ve purchased the bait, you can ask her if she’s heard any rumors about where you can find one of these elusive creatures. She’ll tell you she heard so-and-so say he/she saw some bird stealing his grain, or pecking at his Dolyaks, or heard a strange around coming from a bush, or some other cryptic, but relevant, rumor that hints at where you can find a Moa. What rumor she tells you is completely random, but once you’ve actually captured that Moa at that particular place, she won’t tell you the same rumor again unless you release the Moa back into the wild.

Upon arriving at the location, you’ll have to set some bait and lure the Moa out. It won’t be easy, and it might take more than one attempt, but once it’s out, it’s not guaranteed that it’ll come alone, or that it’ll let you capture it easily. You might have to defeat a boss, a Veteran, several waves of monsters, bring it a certain item before it agrees to go with you, or maybe you just have to chase that bugger down and catch it before it gets away.

Some of the rumors she gives you might even hint that some Moas can only be found in the company of certain Champions, which will have to be defeated in order to capture the Moa. These Moas will be rare and only appear randomly. It’s never guaranteed it’ll be at that particular Champion on that particular day, but if you keep trying, it just might come out for a lucky player.

~~~~~
Events.
There will also be events around the world where you and your party will have to save Moas from certain disasters, or from the Flame Legion, the Undead, or from enslavement by the Krait. You might even have to save them from extinction by helping a Sylvan researcher who figured out a way to breed them in captivity by bringing him Pygmy Moas you’ve captured, which will be rewarded with random prizes like money, consumables, karma, upgrade items, etc, things he found on the field whilst researching Moas. Some might even stacks of Junk Trophies you can equip to your Singing Moa.
Accessibility
The Moa Corral is account wide and can be accessed by any character on a single account. However, if at any time you delete all four of your characters, any Moas you had in your Moa Corral will be deleted and you will have to start all over again.
~They’re also accessible by all professions and races.
Will this be a Gem Shop item?
No, I really hope not. I want to keep this exclusively a World Item, which is something that isn’t purchased in the Gem shop, but can be acquired in the game world, but that isn’t my decision, nor do I expect this suggestion to get any further than this forum. But I can hope, because I think it’d be a lot of fun and something others may enjoy doing.
Again, keep in mind this is only a suggestion and whether or not you think this is a good idea, or a completely ridiculous one, I just wanted to share another idea. I welcome any feedback/suggestions on this idea as well.
I did read the entire post, I just wanted to point out that my Ranger running around with three Moa’s would be a bit over the top. IMO it would make more sense to implement your suggestion with the existing no-function mini pets than to add another type of pet.
This idea gets my full support, particularly having to find them out in the open world. I would even support it if it was just normal minis that you could defeat a champion or veteran to get without any special abilities, just buying them of the TP or gem store seems a waste.
I assume by three Moas you’re referring to your Juvenile Moa, the Mini Moa and the Pygmy Moa I suggested above?
Sure, it might be a bit over the top, but would be pretty nifty nonetheless.
Also, it could be made that you can only use one Collectible at a time, being that you can either have a Mini or a Pygmy Moa out.
Is “moa” plural still “moa” (like deer and sheep), “moas”, or would it be “moai” (mow-eye like “The Moai”)?
Regardless, I like your ideas. Very well done.
Great idea! Doesn’t need to be a special “Not-Mini-Not-Pet”, I’d be totally happy seeing some of this stuff implemented for the existing Minis. They don’t even need to have an impact on anything than atmosphere, a tune while attacking or a Mini-pen for us Zaishen Menagerie fetishists (sob please, a nice little island … just tiny? Pleeaase? ._.) would be enough, even without a condition, just for the cuteness!
There is so much unused potential when it comes to Minis, they use up inventory slots, are … well … mini, and … yeah, that’s pretty much it. I agree, some are nice for RP purposes, some are complementary to some characters’ style but other than that I assume that a vast majority of players just fills up the Minis-Tab with them.
Yes, I totally agree that creating Minis, or creating pets that can be collected and used by all professions, and have actual functionality, would be a great addition to this game. The way they have the World set up and the dynamic events really opens up a lot of possibilities, and this would be a lot of fun to explore.
I’d especially appreciate a looting pet, but I think pets, or Minis, that fall into the categories above would allow for some fun and creative customizations.
Consumables (food, oils/stone/crystal) give stats and many feel they are required for maximizing stats. Should those not even be in the game due to many even kicking players from dungeon parties if they don’t have them? You cannot talk about additional items being required for maximum stats without pointing fingers at other things already in the game like those items.
yes, but they have been in the game since day 1. adding these pets that give the suggested stuff will just add more vertical progression which anet doesn’t want. and food aren’t really required as they are temporary but having these pets aren’t. if you think your party kicked you because you have no food it’s either you’re terrible or your party are kittens
YES! So much this. I find it odd that the majority of the reward items I get aren’t even for my profession, and therefore are completely useless to me besides being sold via Lion Trade, which most of the time doesn’t amount to much.
A reward should be exactly that, a reward, and should be useful to the person receiving it. Especially when it comes to Map Completion rewards.
Also, yes, I think it would be favorable to all players to disable the All Class Pet(s) in PvP and/or WvW events as they would/may provide slightly unfair advantages.
ArenaNet can’t seem to make pets work for Rangers.
No, I think it would be better if the All Class Pet(s) were disabled in PvP/WvW areas, but yes, in PvE, NPC’s/mobs, etc., will be able to target them just like they do for the Hunter Pets. They will be able to die and resummoned/revived by the owner.
As far as pets not working for Hunters, yes I have noticed that it’s definitely not a perfect system and I can name several games off the top of my head that have far superior pet systems, so we can agree on that. They definitely have much to work on, and not just the pet system itself either. But that can be said for most games, to be fair.
But, yes, I’d like for them to be functional/usable for all classes.
I hate to kitten on the moa parade here, but I agree with Gibson. Having moas follow you around purely for cosmetic value might be OK (although even that could potentially cause problems), but having permanent pets with actual in-game functionality is strictly the realm of the Ranger. Giving moas to everyone means that the Ranger has no reason to exist. Not to mention that most classes are designed around the fact that they DON’T always have a pet to help them, so giving permanent pets to everyone would (definitely) cause huge balance issues.
I have to disagree with this idea. I cannot support it because my favorite class is the Ranger. Having pets is a special feature of this class, and giving that ability to everyone makes the class redundant and therefore useless. Many of the features you listed are already provided by my pets; combat, healing, boons, and conditions. Rangers also have specific skills for their pets, such as seeking out and reviving allies.
The emote feature you listed would probably be best added to the minis, as others have said. Personally, inventory space is not an issue for me, I just deposit and sell regularly. Pack animals would take away from the bank and golem bankers. Gathering I fear would only have a use for bot farming. The mini map already tells you where nodes are, and removing the character interaction won’t improve anything. Looting, again for me, has never been a chore in this game. It’s the same interact button, you don’t even need to slow down when running by to loot. If inventory is full, deposit collectibles typically clears up half the space. If anything, looting mechanics would go on to usable mini pets. You can make yours a moa if you like.
A different game I played for a short time, published by the same overlords ArenaNet has, had purchasable pets in it. You could buy said pets from the cash shop. Except, when I say buy I really mean rent, because all cash shop items only lasted 90 days then went away or became inactive. Of course, you could buy food to reactivate your pet. You could also buy upgrades for auto looting, and buffs and things. You could, if you felt the service was worth the repeated purchases.
I think your ideas are interesting, but don’t fit well with the mechanics already provided by the game. Perhaps for a different game.
Seems that some are forgetting that rangers are not the only class that currently has pets; necromancers do as well. Also, elementalists have an elite skill that spawns a beneficial companion. Mesmers constantly spawn what can be considered pets (illusions). Engineers have various contraptions that can be considered companions. Thief has a trap that spawns a companion thief, and even an elite that spawns several. What about the human Hounds of Balthazar elite skill? Charr elite warband skill? Asura 7-Series and D-Series Golem elites? Norn Wurm?
And with other consumables spawning elementals as well as the Mistfire Wolf elite skill, currently any class can have pets that provide bonuses even if they are only temporarily available due to expirations and cooldowns.
Minions and pets are two fairly different concepts.
I really wish my Asura could have a “pet” golem though, I’d love to have a golem – even if it did nothing but hold all my bags for me – named Claptrap.
Even with all that said, though, I think this idea is terrible. Pets are for rangers.
Would be nice though to possibly see some sort of companionship – even if it has no gameplay functionality – such as golems or pack dolyaks. Possibly some sort of luggage carrier you can buy (will basically just be your inventory backpack, but be a walking object). There’s no need to implement any sort of mechanical pet though since these pets already exist on the ranger class and should remain exclusive to rangers.
Seems that some are forgetting that rangers are not the only class that currently has pets
“Pets” as terminology are what rangers alone have in name only. “Pets” used as a term for any spawned NPC companion which provides a combat advantage that the PC must maintain and use strategically is not limited to just rangers.
I’d prefer a passive 25% speed boost for everyone (cough Guardian and Mesmer Cough)
Superior Runes of Traveler! =3
NO
Sorry but the opportunity cost there is too great and doesn’t even remotely compare to those professions that do have passive speed boost.
Just pointing out that rangers are not called “hunters”. Hunters are from wow. Hunters use guns. Rangers do not. And the pet mechanic makes Rangers special, giving other people pets would lessen that.
Rather presumptuous of you.
WoW used the term Hunter to name the class. Many games do. It is not a WoW specific thing.
Hunters don’t necessarily use guns. I use a bow when I go hunting. Setting up rabbit snares is considered hunting too. You can use just about anything to hunt.
Also the automatic “that is WoW” responses from people are getting old. Real old.
@Sazune, love some of your ideas there.
Some of the stuff in ur post reminds me of the fun i had in gw1 getting my black moa ranger pet but especially my black moa chick (mini), the latter was an awesome adventure and in the process u obtained one of the most endearing and prestigious mini pets.
