[Suggestion] Account wide name for chat.
Personally, I think account name should be completely removed from the game. And others should only see our current character’s name. So I guess sort of the opposite of what you’re suggesting, but that’s what I’d like to see. It won’t ever happen, but that’s my ideal.
FYI:
No one ever sees the Account Name, as that is the information one uses to log into an account.
What you want displayed consistently (or not at all for others), is the Display Name.
Good luck.
I have 14 characters and while I identified the problem after 6-7 characters, it is still hard for people in my guild to identify who is talking if you didn’t use the same name in the name of every character.
Some people just use additions like “Java Guard” “Java Warrior” to solve this problem. Maybe I should have done this rather ugly way to solve the problem.
I wouldn’t mind if there was an option for players to be known by their Display Name or by their current character. I’m not sure it’s worth more than a tiny effort on ANet’s part: my toon names bear no resemblance to each other and so when people are confused, I just remind them until it’s cleared up. Turns out: not all that many people care and those who do figure it out quickly enough.
They should just implement a feature to change the display name. I believe Battle Net, Origin Client aka EA (shudders) LoL, RS and Steam generally allow you to change your display name to some extent.
Unfortunately Gw2 is stuck with displaying the account name you created. I’d like to change mine because people know me most by the toon I log into; not by the account name… Sigh.
Slap on a feature over the account name to let us use a display name. Easy.
You can mouse over the name in chat to see the display name, at least for friends/party members/guild members.

This.
Also if they are not in your guild/party/friends list, you can right click and select Report to see their username (without actually reporting them!).
Personally I’d be more confused by OP’s suggestion, and it’d ruin the game for roleplayers if all you see is a screen name instead of a character name. Especially for RPers who have more than one RP character.
