This will give some fresh air to the standard maps we are used to.

Underwater encounters, epic combat against unknown vicious water beasts and monsters, currents to travel faster across the map… Bubbles?

Maybe, Islas of Janthir, Far Shiverpeaks are good locations… Just add some with the next episode, please.

They have seemed to shy away from underwater content for several years now. I am going to be very surprised if we ever get actual underwater content in the future.

I would like it, just not expecting it at all.

This game offers the most beautiful water world I have ever seen.

Legendary underwater weapons, aqua breathers, completely different skills underwater, different fighting style. There should be more content to cover the usage of these things. And if they add a little more it will be perfect. They can even implement new wvw/pvp mode, in an underwater map or at least half of it.

I don’t dislike underwater content but nor do I particularly love it.

Either way aqua breathers are not actually required (take them off, you’ll see your character can’t drown). They’re just an annoyance, really, a second helmet you need to craft and put runes in but rarely use. Many people have been in favour of changing them from armour to just be skins.

Also, they removed most of the water from WvW and all of it from sPvP because most people didn’t enjoy it. Underwater combat is not satisfying and a lot of skills simply don’t work underwater.

Take Revenant as an example of a class that is pretty broken underwater, it has two legendaries that work underwater, Shiro and Mallyx. Neither of the elite spec legends work underwater because their ground targeted abilities can’t be targeted at an arbitrary point in 3D space.

This is a general problem and even if it was solved and you could somehow determine which particular point someone wanted to target still wouldn’t change the fact that a lot of skills are pretty useless underwater. Take, for example, thief traps that created a line and affect people who cross it. That’s great in the normal surface world because you can place it in a choke point where people have to cross but it would be practically useless underwater because people just won’t swim through it. Not because they’re avoiding it but just because the chances of them swimming through that particular point in 3D space is quite low.

I think it doesn’t have to be terrible. I do think that in order to not make it as dull as it is it requires an expansion-level budget.

As it stands, right now, I’m not super excited about having underwater maps dumped into the game. Package up an underwater expansion, with new underwater elite specialisations, build templates and the ability to auto-switch build in diving underwater, underwater masteries (shark riding?) and re-working existing utilities so that they actually work underwater (…and Rev isn’t just stuck on Mallyx + Shiro) and hell yes, I’d totally be into that.

Underwater zones could provide that level of verticality without the need for gliding and updraft/leyline/mushroom use that seemed to wind up so many people.

As I say though… I reckon that’s expansion-level stuff, but it could work, and I’m convinced that underwater combat could be made more fun than it is.

The big question is: If ArenaNet announced an underwater expansion would that turn people away? Sadly, I suspect, the current answer would be yes. A lot of groundwork would probably be required to slowly convert the community’s view of underwater content to a favourable one.

I’d really enjoy more underwater maps. The underwater parts of this game offer some of the most interesting environments and places to explore, really gave this game a unique feel to it.

Sadly though I doubt we’ll see more as I don’t think there’s even been a hint at any more underwater content from Anet over the years, feels like it’s been abandoned. I know some people found issue with the combat, but I thought it was functional at least.

Also while I’m not a fan of them, the fact we now have mounts could give a potential revamp to underwater zones if they decided to create underwater mounts of some form. But I really don’t think we’d see anything like that, or improvements or overhauls to the underwater stuff unless we were getting a whole new expansion where the majority of maps would be underwater ones. (And I doubt we would get such an expac as it would be quite a risky move given how divided players are on underwater stuff, I imagine it would turn a lot of players away from it)

Still for those of us that do enjoy underwater exploration, we can only hope there’s at least more underwater sections added. Having one new LS map that’s purely underwater would be nice, as that would also give Anet a chance to try out some new underwater mechanics to see what players think, to test the water as it were

This is why they shouldn’t go with full expansion but 1-2 maps just to test

I am pretty sure that they will work on the mechanics and will make the combat great and ppl will like it as it will be something new for all of us.

IMO, while UW content needs a lot of polish, it is totally worth it: something beautiful, immersive (lame pun, sorry), different from basic gameplay and extremely unique when compared to other MMORPGs.
