Suggestion-Create a constant speed buff
So long as you’re running forward, characters already receive a 40% speed boost after they leave combat.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Movement_speed
A lot of professions actually already have a utility skill that gives them a constant speed boost. Also, there is this item called speed booster you see
Edit:forgot to mention runes of speed, theyre pretty cheap too, or traveller runes if youre looking for something a bit better.
What I do:
My main is an engineer using rifles. I have superior sigil of speed, which allows me to stack speed buff duration each time I kill something (highest I have gotten so far is about 5 solid minutes of speed buff). The sigil keeps working even if I am using flamethrower or elixir gun.
In addition to that I have speedy kits traited, as well as the permanent speed boost for engineer.
While the speed does vacillate depending on whether I am using the speed buff or not, I also have a ton of speed boosters I got from black lion chests that I keep on hand when I do not feel like attacking things I am passing (often moas). Those speed boosters last an hour I believe.
You might say I have the need, the need for speed. Just don’t ask me what I am in a rush for.

My engineer doesn’t yet have speedy kits unlocked. What I do is run Slick Shoes and Rocket Boots. Also use Elixir heal for the chance of swiftness.
Super Speed + Rocket Boots will give you the largest mobility off a single skill in the game. Activate Slick Shoes to see a nice trail of gunk behind you. (Slick Shoes is necessary for the Super Speed).
Can also use the Gadget Rocket Boots for a tiny leap, only worthwhile if you have any form of speedbuff because the displacement has big delays.
Rifle5 is nice if you don’t have speedboosts.
I am currently playing a warrior and I use a warhorn for the speed buff. It gives me +33% speed. I just hate the warhorn. I carry it only for the speed buff. I get +33% for 10 seconds and it has a 15 second cool down so I can stay at +33% quite a bit.
I just think it would be nice to have this ability without any specific weapons or skills for traveling and map discovery. Someway it could be applied just for running around to get from point A to point B quicker without creating a combat or other type of game imbalance.
I just hate hitting warhorn buff 10 times to get somewhere and I hate building skills and slapping on armor runes etc. just for the speed buff.
I’m fine without it though. I can’t complain a lot because they do have a lot of waypoints built into the game and you can get around pretty quick. With warrior it kind of interferes with my weapon choices. I would probably equip a bow or rifle instead of the warhorn.
Actually, that would be an interesting way to do mounts. It could allow the game to still rely on abilities and buffs for movement speed. But the mounts could simply increase the time the buffs take affect.
Could even make it so the cost is that, if you get off the mount or get drawn into combat, you immediatly lose the buffs.
Not the mounts again…… xD
The only mount for a Charr would be a warbike / tank. And as for the speed buff suggestion – it would render quite a few existing utilities/traits rather useless or would turn some into Barry Allens.

Almost every class does have this with either a Signet or some trait. The only classes that I have noticed that suffer are:
Guardian
Mesmer
Thief suffers by not having any decent kind of speed buff via weapon or utility (not talking about their constant speed signet, if I was thief would be above with Mesmer/Guardian), the split second one from stealing (trait I think) is nothing lol…
They do have shadowstep and the shortbow blink…

Have a look through the trait lines there is also one that gives you a perm speed buff as long as you are using a 1 handed weapon. My warrior has this trait and with the horn skill 4 he is just as mobile as most of the other classes (exceptions being mesmers/guardian).

Well yes but that’s more of a teleport than a speed buff. I would consider that more a weapon skill/utility which many classes also have WITH the speed buff skills. Example Engi has rocketboots, guards/warriors get move/“jump to” skills with greatswords, ranger does as well if I remember correctly. A lot of classes have similar skills but again they ALSO have speed buff skills with warhorns etc.
Swiftness on Dodge, Swiftness on Steal, Signet of Shadows, Swift Shadows.
Heartseeker spam (press 2 when you finish the animation, don’t just mash the button).
Infiltrator’s Arrow spam (can be spammed mid-animation, but be careful).
HS for plain travel.
IA for height travel.
Swift Shadows for fastest movespeed in game (movespeed, not travel distance).
The ‘out of combat speed buff’ is called ‘normal running’, though you could walk everywhere if you choose to do so. There are plenty of runes, traits, sigils, boons, and signets to increase your speed while running even more.
Actually, that would be an interesting way to do mounts. It could allow the game to still rely on abilities and buffs for movement speed. But the mounts could simply increase the time the buffs take affect.

Steal alone is 10/21 when fully traited. That’s nearly 50% uptime. Then you have the passive signet, Swiftness on dodge, etc. Thief is fastest class by far.
Mesmer doesn’t suffer that much, as they tend to run Berserker builds which work well with the Rune of the Centaur and Mirror (13/15), and the condition Mesmer can always equip a Focus while runnning from A to B.
Guardian is absolutely horrible. You pretty much need to use Staff, Retreat and Save Yourselves (potentially combined with teleports) or waste some of your stats to use either Rune of Speed or Rune of the Traveler.
No real option for purely offensive builds on Guardian whatsoever.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

I have to admit I have not tried the steal trait. The dodge one is just a joke however, a very bad joke. Again I said they have the signet like a lot of other classes out there, but what I am talking about is actual speed buffs and not passive perm boosts that most other classes have.
Well my memser is full survival and all he has is the focus speed buff. The trait that they get for speed is a silly combat one (have to have illusions/phantasms out) how helpful is that if you are wanting to be on the move? Why out of all the classes does this class have to be hit with such a restriction?
Guardian, yes they are even worse than mesmer being that there is NO signet or trait whatsoever. All they get is the staff skill. All we are asking for here is a little consistency between the classes.
If everyone and every weapon have a speedboost, let’s simply remove speedboost and let everyone run at default speed…
Everyone does not have speed buffs/boost that is the point of this post. If you are meaning that if everyone DID have them they are then pointless. You are overlooking the fact that you still have to actually slot them, thus you miss out on something else. That alone adds a small part of the strategy to the combat of this game especially when it comes to PvP/WvW

Cool my warrior is only level 21 now. I will have to look into the traits and see if it fits my build when I get to the higher levels and unlock them all. I wasn’t aware of the permanent speed buff. I looked through a character builder and I couldn’t find the permanent speed buff with the 1 handed weapon, but it might be in there somewhere.
A lot of people that have replied to my post seem to like going fast out of combat. Most of you are using runes / skills to make yourselves go faster.
I’d say very few people slow down to walk speed and walk everywhere
I really could see this being implemented equally without an imbalance if everyone had the same type of buff. It would come in handy too if you were rushing to help a downed player.
There’s been times when a little longer speed buff would have let me get to people in time to help them.
I could see it being something like the engineer kit switch skill. They pretty much have this buff anyway but it just requires a lot of button pushing.
I’d like to see every class / race get a permanent speed buff independent of weapons, skills, and gear similar to the engineers with less button pushing. I think it could be done and I don’t think the majority of people would complain if they (the GW2 programmers) implemented it. If people didn’t like it they could always not use it. If people don’t want to go fast they can also always walk every where.
But anyway that’s my thoughts. Thanks for reading.
Something like mounts?

Heehee, I have walk set to my “page up” key and actually DO walk at times, for example some of those escourt missions where the npcs walk very slowly. It adds a little bit of fun and makes me feel like I am actually doing something realistic for a change. :P
About the engi class, I feel I would be doing you a dis-service (being that I main an engi myself) if I didn’t tell you that when Anet bumped the speedy kits trait for the engi they also added a perm speed trait to another line. I used to use the speedy kits myself but now that they added the other trait it saves me having to build into that last line for speedy kits and I don’t have to spam the kit changing any more. Something to think about. That trait and rocketboots are very good, especially in PvP/WvW.
In response to this thread, my signature says it all.

I’ll just put these here:
If everyone and every weapon have a speedboost, let’s simply remove speedboost and let everyone run at default speed…

He’s not referring to ‘universal access to speed buffs’ though, as he made clear. He’s talking about an inherent, built-in speed buff to every profession completely separate from skills, traits, boons, and runes. Basically, he wants the default run speed to be drastically increased. As Virgil said, ‘if everyone had it, it would be pointless’. All it would accomplish is watching scenery go by faster.
Out-of-combat run speed is set to what it is to keep from ‘shrinking’ the size of the maps (the ‘relativity reason’) and to keep from lvl 2s blowing past every mob as they immediately run to Orr after the starter sequence ( the ‘game-balance reason’).
And NO! This is not a good excuse/time for people to shamelessly plug the ‘this is why we need mounts’ stupidity.
Yeah I do that too I toggle to walk on some of those slow paced escort events just for fun
I just loaded up my level 80 engineer and I still have speedy kits (plus 33% boost) under tools skill vi. I did see skill viii power boots under invention which is a permanent speed boost ( plus 25% boost).
I really can’t see why giving everyone a 33% speed boost out of combat is a bad and imbalanced idea. It could be given to people at level 40 or 50 so lower level characters can’t use it if that somehow imbalances the game.
As for running past all mobs. I just loaded up my engineer and tried to run past all the mobs in Orr. Guess what I couldn’t do it. They range attacked me and slowed me down into combat mode.
What i’m talking about is making available a speed boost button say at level 40 if that balances the classes better. Same buff as engineer speed kits except the duration is infinite until taken off by the player or smacked by a mob. Once smacked by a mob the buff is removed until you beat the mob and reset out of combat mode. Once you heal up in out of combat mode and are ready to run around the map more you can reapply the buff.
The engineer already pretty much has this. I don’t think this imbalances the game or greatly shrinks the map. A 33% boost isn’t really a lot faster. I bet 7/10 people use a type of speed buff / skill / rune already if it is available for their character and it fits their build.
Most people will glady use some extra out of combat run speed if it is available. When I played Rift every max level person I met had the fastest mount available. They didn’t buy the slowest mount or not use mounts. And this is not a mounts discussion. I really personally don’t miss mounts much at all in this game. Letting the buff turn you into a tiger or something might be cool though People like to move a little faster once they have seen a map area. If people didn’t like to move fast everyone would just walk every where all the time.
I also bet that if the +33% toggle button buff i’m talking about was added 7/10 people would use it.
I don’t think you could run past all mobs because I can’t do it with my engineer.
I really don’t think a +33% speed buff would imbalance the game at all. It could also be made available at a higher level.
It’s not going to hurt combat because you can easily be knocked out of speed mode by mobs if you get into agro range.
I don’t PVP so i’m not sure if it would need to be available for PVP and I’m not sure if that would imbalance PVP.
I also looked at MOA feather. It is fairly new. I’m assuming it is some type of master level cooking skill (have to do more research). It costs 1gold 77silver on the market. I’m not sure how hard it is to obtain the crafting ingredients. It’s pretty expensive to buy for a 30 minute buff. Maybe it is cheaper to craft it if the ingredients aren’t too expensive or hard to find.
If anyone knows about it please post.
Thanks again for reading.

No, just no. At least not as long as PvE and WvW shares the same system. The maps are small enough for the zergs which have 100% of uptime swiftness, don’t need to add more to their already good mobility.
Besides, if you are only mapping what is the problem in using a signet, utility or a trait? The only professions that really suffers with mobility are guardian and mesmer. Still guardian can use Save Yourselves, but mesmers only have Signet of Inspiration which can or not give swiftness.

I’m currently playing a level 21 warrior. They don’t have speed signet. The only thing I can use is the warhorn for a speed buff. I can’t use traits because they are currently locked. And besides the only trait I see that gains swiftness lets you do it in combat on critical hits. That wouldn’t help you on mapping because it would be worn off after you left combat plus you slow down for combat.
If I use travel runes I have to be level 60 before I can use them and I have to throw 6 of them on my armor. They are 7 gold a piece because only the expensive superior ones give the 25% swiftness. I’m not speeding 42 gold for +25% swiftness on level 60 armor. I’d rather spend money for runes I actually need to help with combat stats at level 80.
And if they implemented the buff i’m talking about the mesmer wouldn’t suffer anymore. No one would.
Yes I can use warhorn but I would rather run around with a bow or rifle while mapping so I can do range attacks. And I’m not really just running around discovering stuff I’m actually doing a lot of hearts and events and combat. So at my level warhorn is the only speed option that I can think of. So I’m stuck using a weapon I don’t really like if I want to run faster.

Yes I want perma swiftness for all classes while out of combat (OOC). Plus 33% extra swift buff beyond the 40% increase in regular out of combat run speed. Just like the warhorn gives. But still you slow back down and it toggles off when you enter combat mode. I just think it would be a nice convenient buff for getting around the map. I think you should have to reapply it after combat. It would keep me from smacking the warhorn buff button 10 times to get to where I want to go. I just can’t see why I can’t smack a button one time and it stay on instead of having to wield a warhorn (a weapon I don’t like) and hit a button over and over again. I really don’t think it would be that bad of an idea.

What kind of games did you play before GW2, out of curiosity?
Almost every class does have this with either a Signet or some trait. The only classes that I have noticed that suffer are:
Guardian
MesmerThief suffers by not having any decent kind of speed buff via weapon or utility (not talking about their constant speed signet, if I was thief would be above with Mesmer/Guardian), the split second one from stealing (trait I think) is nothing lol…
Rune of the Centaur is horrible for Mesmers, as is using your heal on cooldown for speed buffs. Constantly swapping focus in and out doesn’t really put them on par with other classes either.
if everyone had a default speed upgrade who would use speed boosters?
Now I see what it is you really want. Honestly, I don’t think it is needed. There are plenty of waypoints and even if there were not, the world is pretty small in reality….
It only takes me about 2 hours to complete any map now so honestly you don’t need to speed that up a great deal. There really is no need to get anywhere in a hurry. As to Orr, it’s not too bad, you can avoid a lot of the enemies, and don’t even get me started about how it used to be there, lol it is vastly improved. You couldn’t even walk 1 step without drawing aggro from about 3 mobs.
Oh and in your OP you said:
“This would be nice for exploring”.
In actually if you are moving too fast you truely are NOT exploring. It takes time, going slow and looking at everything from every angle to truely explore. I had to go back to every map after I got world complete to truely explore them BECAUSE I cleared them so fast the first time around.
The only thing I can see a constant massive speed buff doing that you are asking for is to vastly speed up farming wood/ores. Let me guess you are farming clusters in Orr? :P
if everyone had a default speed upgrade who would use speed boosters?
If everyone had +70% run speed as suggested by the OP, what would a speed boost be anyway?
@Paulytnz: You couldn’t be more dead wrong about thief. They are BY FAR the fastest profession in the game. Nothing else even comes close.
Mesmer is kinda meh, but their in combat mobility is incredible to make up for it.
Guardian is worse than watching grass grow. We told them that the change to SoS was a terrible idea in the December CDI, but you know what people (Anet) say about opinions…

With regards to thief I was not taking into account things like teleports etc which as I have stated other classes have as well if built correctly. Also I was not aware of the 20 odd second speed buff trait from stealing. Now that I am aware of this they are equal in my eyes with the other classes. Leaving both Mesmer and Guardian my 2 least faves for mobility right now.
A lot of you don’t like my idea of the previously discussed speed buff yet the engineer can do what I’m talking about with kit swapping. It just requires pushing a button every 10 seconds. I really think everyone should be able to do what the engineer can already do. I think that would be fair. And everyone should be able to do it with less button pushing and having to build it into weapons and skills.
But I guess everyone is happy that one class can do what I’m talking about and others can’t.
I guess it is balanced.
Making a Mesmer as fast as an engineer would somehow be unfair and unbalanced.
Maybe I’m thinking about things wrong.
And no I’m not really farming. I have a level 80 engineer if I want to run fast and farm stuff and “not explore” because I’m going too fast and make the map small because I’m going to fast.
What I am talking about is already in the game if you are an engineer. I just thought it would be a good idea to give it to every race / profession in a different way.
Maybe they could make everyone’s weapon swap give a +33% speed boost out of combat for 10 or 15 seconds at a time. Maybe that would be a better idea. Then everyone could do what the engineer can do. They can push buttons a lot to maintain swiftness.
But anyway I’ve made my suggestion. Maybe the GW2 designers will read it and consider it. They could always beta test the idea and let people vote to see if they liked it.
Everyone has their own opinion about ideas and can like or hate them, and everyone has their own form of logic and right to agree or disagree.
