I am sorry if this has been suggested before, but I have always liked the fact that we can explore Tyria at large, find trees, ores and other gatherables. However, I always found it a bit odd that, despite having so much water, ships, nets, and a generous amount of fishing npcs, there was no way for the player to participate in such activities!

I want to suggest fishing both to the Guild Wars 2 community and to the developers themselves to give it a chance, I know this would be no small feat whatsoever, but it would be a fun addition (and source of collections, for those who enjoy that kind of content) to the pve aspects of this game!

As we all know, theres a plethora of things to do in Guild Wars 2 when it comes to PvE content, such as exploring, completing hearts, gathering and the like, and while so many maps have abundant water, they make no use of it other than for a few gathering nodes! (such as underwater ores, seaweed and coral, among others)

So, what of fishing? how could it be implemented? like I mentioned earlier it is no small addition to think of, and no easy work either! a few ideas that could be worked on to flesh out fishing in Guild Wars 2:
-Fishing collections divided on areas of the world map (eastern tyria, western tyria and so on)
-materials that can be used in cooking, and guild hall decorations such as fishing trophies
-while fishing, the player could “catch” some other underwater materials like seaweed, coral orbs, and a seldom ore (odd suggestions, but this is a game after all!)

As for fishing tools… the standard fishing rod? with a racial design to accomodate each taste (whether it matches your race or not, dont think we have had a race-based addition in a while)

I would like to suggest other kinds of fishing tools, but its a rather silly idea I wanted to share, see what my fellow players think about it! and again, my apologies if this has already been discussed in the past!

Fishing could be fun; how would one fish, exactly? Could you give your idea on the mechanic?

Fishing has been suggested lots of times before, but unlike mounts I won’t beat the dead horse.
The main arguments that return to each discussion are always:
Why would you want to add it.
New content must give: appropriate rewards or be useful.
At the current stage, not many people have faith that fishing will be worth the while. While I’m personally not against the implementation of fishing, I am against the spending of resources on game content that will serve little to no advancement to the game.
I believe we could certainly use a few fish-based recipes in the cooking list.

Maybe we can have a new account-wide resource gathering experience:
Harvester: increases the yield of gathering plants
Lumberer: increases the yield of logging
Miner: increases the yield of metals and gems from veins
Hunter: increases the drop rate of meats from animals including fish.
This would increase like magic find just by doing it. just like magic find points are found by salvaging, gathering find points are found by gathering. But they won’t appear in the inventory, they just immediately up in the score.
We won’t get fishing rods or fishing nodes, but we’ll still get fish-meat just by killing crustaceans, salmons, sharks, tunas, barracudas, since they already exist in-game as enemies.

If a mmo had fishing and I played that mmo, I always fished. Fishing was a way to unwind, something to do while chatting, and above all, made the mmo world seem more real, less one dimensional. Years ago, I posted ideas for fishing that included a skill bar based on the pole and bait choices, had pole angle controlled by the mouse and even offered the choice of dispatching the fish or releasing. Fishing can be fun and engaging.

That being said, there are some challenges to being a fisherman in Tyria. Namely, Tyria is crowded, there are not many places where someone could fish and not be easily interrupted by another player running by with a train of foes. That player wouldn’t have to be a troll either. Dynamic events would also have to be designed so that, if they move around, they do not interfere with likely fishing areas.

I also don’t think the studio believes fishing fits their design aesthetic. At this point I would just be happy to see the poor fishermen in Queensdale on Lake Delavan finally cast their rods and start fishing. They have been poised to cast for years and the fish are laughing.

Can it really be called fishing if it doesn’t result in fish meat? What you describe sounds more like killing. I think Tyrian fish flesh may be too delicate and can not survive interaction with heroes.

Really though, having actual fish and actual swimming makes the idea of “fishing” seem obsolete.

But, I can always hope that Cooking 500 results in Quaggan sushi~

However much speaking in the third person annoys me, I can’t condone eating those that annoy me. Unless they cross a threshold of savory goodness.

There are fish and swimming people in the real world and yet some of us fish from the shore. I think it is difficult for non-fishers to understand fishers because we want to do something that isn’t especially productive. We aren’t particularly sensible. I have spent orders of magnitude more money on fishing than on what fish cost.

Well the core of the idea behind fishing is to have a non-combat addition to the game ^^ I know there is a plethora of different underwater life to utterly poke and spear at our leisure, but that is the exact same to pretty much everything else you can do in pve in regards to combat, it would be uninspiring to make such an addition, hell, even depressing!

It could be like some sort of mini game (not instanced for the love of god) where you find the desired fishing spot, choose bait, rod (given there are variations) and start fishing, how to actually fish has been handled in games so differently it would be difficult to say a “this is best for gw2” option; a quick time event? (with an ample window of reaction, for those of slower connection) just little brainstormed ideas ^^

Fishing is already long overdue to be implemented into this game together with finally adding Chef 500 and Jeweler 500.
Fishign would be the perfect reason to add as part of the recipes for legendary food by having to catch some rare fishes for them.

Angling rods existed already from day 1 when the core vanilal game got release, there existed already as environmental items Angling rods, – back at these dsay when you used them all skill icons had ?, so you knew instantly, that it wil lbe most likely, that aNet seems to plan somethign for them later.

If ANet would plan something on fishing, then there would be absolutely no need to implement angling rods as enviromental items at all, esecially not with ? Skill icons as if they are just placeholder items that are just already there, waiting for the moment, once anet has develeped and implemented the skills for the angling rod, because they aren’t at all Top Priority at the development of the game, like actually Weapon Skill and Story content and gameplay mechanics, that should work from day 1 on completely, because they stood on ANets top priority list for that time.

Lets see, that Asura in Rata Sum is now already working for over 4 years on the portal to the Polymock Area, there you see, how things can be quickly put on ice by Ane, thigns that shoudl have been there on day 1 and still laren’t existing in the game until today, like also alot of Town Minigames cough ..Bar Brawls, Target Shooting ect. cough

If the next xpansion doesn’t add fishing (most likely) then I think theres not much hope for it anymore to get to see it the years after it, especially not if the next expansion fails like HoT and brings not enough cash in to compensate the development costs to bring in profit

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

It’s been suggested before, even by an Anet Developer.
According to the AMA a long time ago, he was laughed at for bringing it up.

Sadly, it seems that ANET will never take that as a serious idea…
Shame really, it’s a feature I really enjoyed in other MMO’s.

True genius is often laughed at.
That is how I explain all the laughter.

As much as I want fishing, I also realize it doesn’t fit the studio’s aesthetic. They take their credo, WWMBD? (What would Michael Bay do?) seriously.

Fishing can be fun, but this being a genre in which “gameplay” and “content” are often equated with “grind”, I’d be worried that a fun pastime would turn into a horrible chore. And I say that as an ex-WoW player whose main always had Fishing (and Cooking) maxed — there were times when I genuinely enjoyed it and would in fact just cast a lure and watch the scenery for a while, and times when I bleedin’ cursed it because it took an age and a half to get anywhere with it.

If they do introduce fishing, I’d hope that they’d keep it more “fluff-and-fun” and not too painful to level, but I doubt they’d introduce it unless it was in some way relevant … and that would almost certainly mean a grind.

See, you misunderstand, what I mean at the beginning of my thread is that I would like to see a non-combat (that means, I do not have to kill it with my weapons) activity in pve, something else that is not just “get to this place, kill this, recieve that” Fishing, actual fishing with a tool, not killing, catching something, trapping it, not spearing it in combat.

I think we could avoid making fishing a grind (and thus a chore) by making it more interactable, sure, you would have to get bait (most likely by farming it) to fish with, but spots would change overtime, rather than being in one spot, this could sound bothersome to some people, but it would prevent fishers from just sitting in one spot going afk (looking at you, Runescape), on the contrary, more fishers in one spot could boost chances at catching things, more often and would force the fishing spot to “disappear” and reappear somewhere else, people would be on the move, it would (at least I hope) engage players into chatting, sharing tips or ideas for fishing or anything else in general, something you easily miss with typical content that has you rushing around everywhere with no such chance as to look at someone else’s face. Fishing would allow such things, at least thats my hope.

It would definitely have to retain the principle that people do not have to compete for resources nodes because everyone can gather them individually. That is one thing I really do love about GW2.

WoW did the “fishing nodes disappear after x catches” thing, and that kinda worked for me because it made sense. Again, though, it should not be global for all players.

The actual process of fishing could probably be a bit more involving than just “cast lure, wait for the bob, click”. Stardew Valley has a little minigame in which you need to counter the fish’s efforts to escape, and each fish has its own distinctive pattern. That’s kind of fun, but it would absolutely not work if made into a “catch 100,000 fish to level up” or “the fish you need has a 0.1 droprate” grind.

Oh yeah grinding fishing sounds absolutely terrible lol, I liked Stardew Valley as a fishing mini game, it was really engaging, now… doing that in an online game? that might prove difficult, or maybe not, the fishing could be slower paced so it is doable for all sorts of connection speeds (on the reasonible idea of “speed”) or maybe something else entirely? thats the hard part to do, the “how to” of it all!

FFXIV’s fishing system is somethng i very much enjoyed. There is no nodes, schools etc. Any body of water is fishable (and clouds and deserts cause… reasons) The system itself is veryt simple although requires some grind to optimise. In gw2 i can easily see us just skipping that grind and going straight to the satisfying part. It is not difficult in any way but it feels good to reel in a big fish.

The way it works is you have 4 buttons for fishing.

A cast line skill.
A reel in skill.
A powerful hookset (for big and rare fish)
A precise hookset ( for small and fickle fish)

These four are used in order: Cast line, then wait for a sound. Depending on that sound you can ddetermine the size and strength of the fish. Then use appropriate hooksets to get it on land.

But since gw2 does not share FFXIVs job system i propose we add a fishing pole as equippable weapon. This would make finding a sequre fishing spot a part ofthe challenge. Equipping it would change the skills on the hotbar to similar fishing related skills. Perhaps even add a “Build” system allowing us to optimize skills and passives to catch bigger and more specified fish.

Fishing should not be a frustrating activity. I use it as a way to wind down and relax, listen to the zones ambience and music and just enjoy the scenery. The fish themselves could perhaps be skinned for scales, cooked, etc.

Fishing would be last or next to last on my list for prioritizing possible additions to the game. In other games, I’ve found the “activity” boring. When in the mode for something that is not doing events and fighting things, I harvest. While harvesting is also just clicking on something, at least I’m moving my character around.

That said, MMO’s survive on providing people with ways to waste their time. On that score, fishing certainly fits the bill.

Indeed Ashen, however, as I mentioned at the beginning of my post, and a couple other times pages ago, the idea of this suggestion is to add a non-combat pve mechanic to the game, to the maps that have water bodies in them. Anyone can pick up a spear and go killing, but thats basically just another section of combat.

Now, somebody suggested the fishing system from FF14 which seems to be very interactive and fun, sort of like Stardew Valley’s Fishing mini game. Fish anywhere, with its own tricks and quirks.
