GW2 has completely overlooked a common issue in their gameplay mechanics, namely being offline for a short period of time.

In many different cases doing so punishes the player and will undo their effort.

Common reasons for such offlines would be: getting a phone call, doorbell ringing, client disconnect, client crash. I’m sure I’m overlooking a few.

I suggest fixing this by adding a short timer when a player logs out (or crashes). If they relog during this time they would go to the same map & instance of it they were in. They would not lose buffs & events continue tracking their reward. Even if bosses die or events complete during this time.

Specifics below.

First , a little list of ways players get punished for being offline momentarily.

Events:
If completed while offline the player gets absolutely no credit, no matter how much they contributed.
Dungeons:
No credit for final boss if offline during it, getting kicked out of the map at any stage.
Silverwastes:
Losing all buff stacks earned through playing and/or slot in populated map.
Personal story:
Having to restart the part you’re on.
Full maps (for major events):
Losing your spot & having to find a new populated map.

All of the above would be fixed by giving players a short timer during which they still get event rewards, don’t lose their map spot & don’t lose their buffs.

I see no reason to punish people through the gameplay mechanics for disconnecting for a few moments, in many cases these are even involuntary (connection/crash issues).

It’s also something that can really ruin the game experience. Having a good chance to completely lose all your work through random occurrences is completely demotivating and sucks all the fun out of these activities. (Events, personal story, dungeons.)

+1 I don’t know about voluntarily disconnecting, but loosing your spot on the map, buffs and even event participation during Tequatl, 3 Headed Worm or Silverwastes just because you lost the connection to ANet’s servers for a few seconds isn’t fair. Also loosing someone from a special-team can ruin the worm for the whole map (ofc most orgas have backup-players), therefore it’s important to have disconnected players join the map again as fast as possible. If their spot on the map was reserved for a minute or two after disconnecting this would help a lot.

Jup that’s one of my biggest annoyances with this game. I crash frequently due to issues between my client & gpu. Randomly losing effort because of it for no real reason is a pain.

Yep I agree.

I’m working with my ISP for a fix now, but I’ve had a few D/Cs in the past few months that had my monitor happy there wasn’t a crowbar nearby.

Sure VW is only about 2-3 rares, but it sure isn’t great getting nothing from it because of a 2 second connection drop after 45 mins of helping the defense/breach.

Sadly, last time we had a thread about this, a number of posters had the idea that it was our own faults we were disconnecting.

It’s a thing that happens, people!

play in a group/team

Some people may not want to, or may not have anyone to play with. This comment makes a lot of assumptions. Playing with a group isn’t always possible.

I do think that something should definitely be done about this. Having issues with the internet at home is one thing. Losing all credit for an event or restarting a mission or dungeon because of it is another thing entirely.

I have experienced this a lot. The ISP I’m with has had a fair amount of problems recently, and while I understand it’s not Anet’s fault at all, I would love to see a system implemented where I don’t lose rewards for something that is beyond my control.
