Suggestion: Gear Leveling!
Like really whats the point of grinding for a skin, grinding for karma, or wvwing when you get nothing out of it except gold?
If I give you a ball and ask you to bounce it up and down, you might find it to be fun and do it for a while.
But if I ask you to bounce it up and down for ten hours straight, you’d probably get tired after a while and refuse to continue doing it. Why? Because you don’t find it fun enough.
Now say that for each bounce, you get points of some kind that can be used in exchange for a reward. If the reward is attractive enough, you just might start bouncing that ball again.
However, did the introduction of the reward make bouncing the ball fun again? No it did not. You might say that it’s fun because you like the idea of getting the reward. But the action in itself has not become more fun. In fact, if I remove the reward, you’d most likely stop bouncing the ball right away in protest, and refuse to bounce it again until I promise to give you the reward again.
If you think that you get nothing out of doing those things in GW2, then there is no point in doing them. Adding more levels or rewards will not make them more fun, and although you might enjoy hunting the levels and the rewards, the actions themselves are evidently not rewarding for you and are therefore pointless.
Imagine instead that there are no rewards at all in all of GW2, what would you be doing in game, if you would still be playing? Whatever your answer is, that’s what you should spend your time doing. If you get a reward for doing that, then that’s merely a bonus! Remember, it’s a game, and it’s supposed to be fun!

I’ve thought something along these lines with karma-bought accessories. More for leveling them as you go since I’d love for some of the more interesting named low level stuff to be still be good at 80. At 80 they could go through the tiers but I’m not sure how that would fit into the GW2 scheme of things.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
No thanks .. was a PITA in Lotro .. don’t need it here.

Not having to constantly work on upgrading gear is one of the things I like about this game.
It was a really nice feeling when I got my main character to level 80 and got a full set of exotics because it meant I was done with upgrading and didn’t have to worry about what would give me the rewards I needed or what was the most effcient way to get gold/other currencies to afford them.
Instead I could just log in and think about what I wanted to do, then do that. Which is a lot more fun.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
i rather have a flat stat system so gear grind only go’s so far, we already have quite a gear grind with not only armor and weapons but also all the trinkets.
if the whole trinket crap was not in the game and all armor are equal in terms of armor range, i can life with exclusive runes for higher ranks but it’s getting way to close to world of warcraft with all the gear grind.
Go play other MMO plz.

No thank you.
This isn’t that game you’re hoping to make it.
No, no, no, no, definitely not. Little to no vertical gear progression is one of the great things about this game.

This game already has far more vertical progression than it should have which has already made it increasingly hard for me to talk myself into logging in for. I’m totally down for the LS stuff, but themepark story content never lasts very long. Outside of that I rarely get on for much more than dailies these days. Why do I do dailies? For laurels. Why do I want those? So I can get more stupid ascended trinkets for my alts who were already fully geared before stupid ascended gear came out. It’s a chore and it’s not fun.
I have a bunch of alts but I don’t even touch anymore than a 3 of them anymore, and even there, it’s mainly just one. Now I feel permanently undergeared on them and permanently poor trying to catch them up, to the point where I’ve more or less just retired them. Too much trouble.
They should have given us more horizontal things to do, things actually more meaningful than just grinding for the sole purpose of making arbitrary (but imported because of power) numbers go up.
So ..no. Heck no. Kitten no. No more vertical progression. There are plenty of horizontal things they could give us (and should have long ago) that would keep me much more invested in the game. But adding more vertical nonsense would only have the opposite effect.

Ascended armor and weapons added nothing to this game. It was all just an illusion for gear grinders to get something to do but were so useless in the end anyway.

shrug. I’m glad that is one part of Anet philosophy that didn’t change. Everyone can get BIS or nearly BIS with a little effort. From there it becomes how you use that gear rather than the gear itself.
Ideally, this means people beating the most difficult content in game are doing it with skill, rather than gear. Some will debate it it’s working as well as it should, but I think it is a better philosophy.

ask your self this, can you take down enemies in orr with white armor?
if not then you know the whole gear “illusion” isn’t much of an illusion but rather an oversight ppl miss while the gear grind you’re referring already exists.
i could even add to that question if you can take down anything in orr without trinkets, again if not then you’re still under the illusion that there is no grind.
i understand that nothing should just be handed on a silver platter but stop fooling your self, gear grind exists in this game just as much as in any other MMO, maybe not as obsessive but it exists nonetheless.
I don’t want a constant gear grind. If you do this game’s basic philosophy is not for you – they said no gear progression.
I mean I’ve been playing the game for 2 years now, and each day more and more people are getting ascended armor. Something that I find wrong with this game is the lack of character customization, its like I payed 175 gold for some sentinel’s armor and grinded really hard for my armor style but then I look over at someone else and not only do they have the same style, but the same stats too; It doesn’t make me feel unique, or that I worked for something noteworthy or keyword unique. I’m sure a lot of the people who agree with me haven’t responded, but I think this is a great way to make your character more unique other than having said you paid gems or gold for some style you wanted from the TP or gem store. As for those of you saying I have to go play another mmo, I do play other mmos where they incorporate this, and the player base and overall success has increased dramatically more than GW2; some of which include TERA:Rising, LOTRO, WoW, DnD:Neverwinter, Vindictus, and several others. Also, even though they said no gear progression, what youre look at what you’re doing to get ascended armor as it is, if that’s not gear progression I don’t know what gear progression is.

Counter-proposal: let’s do away with stats on gear completely other than Weapon Strength and Defense. Then have gear be all about looks. Or, we could meet in the middle and leave things as they are.

The characters in Lotro still look as crappy as ever no matter how high you have leveled your weapons.

Plenty have already left this game (not including china, its pretty new there)
Why? because of the lack of progression period… horizontal/vertical, doesn’t matter. theres just no progression at all. Once you hit 80, you can literally do any endgame content. Full exotic armor is dirt cheap (minus high lvl fracs)

But nobody else sees it .. you can else also just type /age in the chat and save the image, print it and put up on your wall if that makes you feel better in any way.
But you shouldn’t have better stats just because you grinded with only one char forever. Else we could also remove the level-cap and you get stronger with each level until you can onehit every boss in the game if you just invest enough time.
But GW2 has no gear grind, and everybody can get exotic quite fast, and you can take a break for some month and when you come back you don’t have to fear you fall now behind and will never again reach other players.
Also .. we can play alts as much as we wish and don’t have to always think : nooo i better have to spent all the time grinding up just one character

So having more options is worse than having less options ?
I think people that don’t understand that concept were simply wrong here and should better play any of those generic raid-grinders.
In the end the whole progression thing is nothing more as if you would destroy your stuff every few weeks and then grind to get it again.

And your problem with that is? To me it is a boon that there is no gear grind. There are already plenty of games that have gear grinds and it is nice to have one w/o it.
Your point does nothing – I like the fact that at lvl 80 you can do anything. I think that is a boon.
As far as people coming and going in game, this game is NOT like a sub game where when people leave they almost never come back. People in this game come and go and that is due to the B2P nature of the game. People don’t want to admit that it is different but it is.

I got no problems with being 80 and doing everything… the problem is what do I work towards? I want some cool new skins, but its tied behind using a credit card or 100% RNG (fractal weapon skins or black lion key farming for scraps to get gemstore skins). Farming tons of gold is an absolute bore and its mind numblingy repetitive… I’ve done these dungeon paths over and over and over only to get a daily gold reward and save up enough to just buy a skin…Teq and Wurm… require mass coordination and with megaservers, this got harder… you are the mercy of RNG again , hope to get placed in a good map with a coordinated guild.. go through all that effort and be rewarded with what? oh more blues and greens and some yellows… awesome.
The one open world event that worked exceptionally well imo was twisted marionette but its no longer here… at least I didn’t have to put so much effort into getting taxi’d like I have to for teq/wurm

So what do you do in other games then ? Run Dungeon 1 200 times until the RNG finally gave you all the stuff you want from that Dungeon and so that you finally are good enough for Dungeon B where exactly the same start. And if you finally have your Dungeon B stuff you can trash all your Dungeon B Stuff.
The funniest thing for me is that this progression doesn’t really makes you better, since you maybe have 10000 HPs with Dungeon A stuff and Dungeon-B Boss hits you for 5000 .. so 2 hits and your dead.
Now with Dungeon B Stuff you have 11000 HPs .. but of course you now go to Dungeon C where the Boss hits you for 5500 HPs .. so your still dead in 2 hits.

GW2 shares same concept as GW1, gear stats are capped, no matter how ascended or elite.
But it was supposed to be capped, Ascended gear wasn’t suppose to exist or even be slightly higher stats than Exotic.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.
(edited by FrostSpectre.4198)
And continuing what Belden mentioned, once you gear for T3 or 4 the rest of the game is trivial. Really really trivial. You are only balanced to that top content.
My t1 Guard in Everquest 2 killed normal SF mobs her level with just retal and riposte. Just standing there and doing nothing. They couldn’t dent her. A t4 geared guard made her look like a fluffy bunny.
My Assassin, literally, one shot everything on the map, including heroics overland. Multi attack and massive crits. 40k multi crits on a default bow shot. No special. This was self buffed solo. If I bothered to stealth and shank them with Eviscerate, it just got worse.
Mentored or Chronodownleveled they were Goddesses. Lower level x2 Raid bosses were nothing. Certain x4s too, depending if their script let you solo. 12 and 24 player content easily soloed while downleveled.
None of that “trivial” content could be adjusted up because players in normal/ MC gear needed a shot at doing it. Geared up, most of the game became a snooze. Geared players cried that the game was too easy. Leveling and normal geared players wondered what game they were playing. The gap between have and have not got wider with each tier boost.
Power creep is is just bad. Anet is doing the right thing, IF they stick to it. It is one of the better things they brought forward from the old game and didn’t wreck too badly. Ascended could have been a whole lot worse than how they did it.

Your arguments are invalid. I can point out a bunch of different ones that counter your statements a lot more than you think.
For your first argument you can link your gear on any chat; and it will show the runes you have and so on, but it shows no progression or any sign of how long you’ve had it. typing /age can only be seen by yourself, and obviously that’s not useful if not noted. Either way, you can think of this as something to be considered as an elite player. With a bigger background and more expertise in your art.
For your second aguement what you did was go on what logic classes refer to as a slippery slope, you can google that if you wish to, but your slippery slope was assuming that adding a point to a stat will make you an overpowered player; if that were true, then people with ascended armor would clearly be overpowered because they have another 4-5 more points than exotic armor. There’s also controversy with skill, that by adding one more point would mean negating skill, that’s true only the an extremely slight quantity. It’s the same as saying that people with ascended armor are significantly more skilled than those with exotic armor. Clearly, that’s a hasty generalization and it’s false. In addition to this I didn’t say that the leveling of the gear would be infinite, that’s obviously a stupid idea and it would mean many more things I wont fathom on this post.
For your third argument, okay gw2 may not have a gear grind, but it does in fact have a style grind, which is almost pretty much the same exact thing, you go off for sometime, and new styles and stuff come out; in this you can choose to pay for that style or grind for it. You missed a really big fact that I just pointed it out for you. Also, this is a style, it has no influence on what your stats are, so your argument is one that has no influence on my proposal.
For your last argument, the top counter I have for that is that it’s wrong to assume that just because you’ve played with more characters in the game doesn’t mean you’ll grind for them anyway, I’ve seen people with 17 characters and it’s pretty stupid if you’re at that point simply because your number of challenges become less, and even though you’re not grinding for armor you’re still grinding map completion, events and other stuff you do on your other characters. If you’d ask me, that is really dumb. But as noted nobody forces you to make a new character, you just do it because of your free will, but like I said, it has nothing to do with increasing a stat on your armor by a point per item level. Nor does it make you of any less value.
GW2 is designed for no vertical progression
This is worthy of a tag line, the satire is remarkable.

So .. how makes that my argument invalid ? Thats just what i said .. NOBODY else sees your oh so awesome progression .. so why is it better if only you see that you have maybe a +100 AR infusion that nobody sees than having a nice mixed and matched outfit ?
Its not like this is Everquest 2 where you can inspect everyone and see : Wow .. the stats of the items of that guy are 3 x better than mine.

You know why a “style grind” is much better than a gear grind? I can still be at peak efficiency (if I cared) even while I’m working for the style I like. With a gear grind, I’ll never be at peak efficiency, even if I wanted.
And if I don’t like that new style that just came out, I can safely ignore it, and still be at peak efficiency.
And as answer to the question above (about the trinkets in Orr), I found out, shortly after the ascended came out, that my main, who had already done her entire story, including mapping of the world, was still wearing some blue below level 50 trinkets… While wearing rare armor set and using rare weapons….

Amen. Prior to appearance slots in EQ2 I had a lot of KoS BIS gear at that time. My guild called me Rainbow Brite and laughed at me. KOS was such a horrid mishmash of color. Still cringe at those screenshots. You could judge how effective a player was in KOS by how hideous the outfit looked. You had to dump a pile of stats to look good, and everyone knew that you had.

Haha .. i still have saved that one picture, but sadly not all of them .. was something like : now finally i got my BIS headwear and cape .. and then that ..
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

LOL! People that weren’t there won’t know that the pic isn’t overstating the issue!
Wow .. talking bout EQ2 i just watched that thread :
https://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/index.php?threads/help-for-relatively-new-sk.549958/
and saw that a lvl 95 Shadowknight has now 975.000 Hitpoints .. is that real ?
When i left the game at RoK times my level 80 SK had around 12.000 hitpoints i think.
Now here we can see where too much gearprogressions leads to .. lol

Ascended armor and weapons added nothing to this game. It was all just an illusion for gear grinders to get something to do but were so useless in the end anyway.
The difference between weapons is noticeable, 5% more damage for a two handed weapon (not counting the stat increase). You might not think that’s a lot, but it’s substantial enough to make a difference, especially when it’s so readily obtainable. Armor on the other hand, it’s pretty useless.

Haven’t logged in since the cap increase. I would not doubt that a raid geared SK buffed would get there. I loved a lot of EQ2 features but progression and power creep has gone off the map and wrecked a lot of it. Kunark I recall when Kunark mobs hit darn hard. Two years ago I could solo Karnors chrono’d down on my SK and they are insanely more powerful now.
No hope for EQNext since Smokejumper let progression go wild on his watch, and he is running that. He was the guy that thought giving every single mount in game base 130% speed was kewl. lol.. 17 silver SK noob summon horse… 130% speed, 115% boost.
Staying away from that is the best thing Anet has done, in both games.
GW2 is designed for no vertical progression
- What gives you that idea? Ascended gear, WXP ranks and 500 crafting was added because there wasn’t enough vertical progression. The game engine is so poor that even AoE damage goes through walls. Where do you think the player retention lies?
Remember, it’s a game, and it’s supposed to be fun!
Games are fun because they are competitive… It does not matter if it’s a sport game, board game or computer game.
When athletes run they run for gold… Not only because they like running.
I wrote this suggestion over 7 months ago as part of the CDI- Character Progression- Vertical thread.
Maybe something like this might work out as a compromise for those who want Vertical progression and those who don’t.

I think if you are wearing gear when you level up it should go up in a level so that way you don’t have to continually buy new gear as you are leveling. It get’s annoying to have to buy a whole new set of gear every 5 levels or so.
What in the world is it with some people constantly needing something to ‘level up’? Maybe if we start comparing it to getting old people will desire to not do it so much? (Cause last time I checked, getting old was considered a bad thing lol)
I understand desiring the feeling of progression. Like your character is going somewhere, doing something, growing, etc. We need more skills, more customization, more objectives to work towards. Not arbitrary numbers that give us a false sense of being stronger. Oh boy more hp, and more defense! “I swung a sword…I swung a sword again…”
I don’t mind the idea.
However there will always be those that shout, “GAH! The grind!!!!”
