With this Suggestion are meant the Torch, the Shield, the Focus and the Warhorn.
Weapons, which currently can be used only as offhand weapon in the right hand.
Its a huge weapon skill design flaw, to make these weapons only useable as offhand weapons.
These 4 weapons should be also useable for all classes, which ckittene these weapons as a mainhand weapon, so that you can deal also with these weapons some serious damage to get easier with them the killing blows.
Getting fir the Weapon master Achievement of these 4 weapons is due to this skill design discrepancy a real pain in the kitten and it should be done somethign about this.
Yes, changign this bad situation would mean to implement a few new weapon skills, but that effort should it be really worth it so that the overall game makes more fun and there then beign also a bigger chance, that those weapons getting more used also by players. Here are some Skills Suggestions for how you could make those 4 weapons more interesting for the classes, which ckittene those 4 weapons.

Lets start with the Shield

Warrior

AA
1) Tackle > Shield Uppercut > Body Slam
Hit your foe with a fast Tackle of your Shield, followed by an Uppercut to cause Bleeding ending in a poweful leaping Body Slam holding your Shield as protection in front of you, causing the foe to get dazed for a second.

2) Shielderang
Throw your Shield like a boomerang, hitting all foes in line of it and also in the line of it, when it returns to you. Causes with each hit vulnerability. Range: 700

3) Backhand Bash
Turn your upper body quickly aroud by 90° to hit all targets in that angle in frotn of you and to knock back a target with the Shield Bash that stands behind you.

Guardian

AA
1) Reflector Strike
Attack your foe with the shield and if you receive in that tiem self damage, a part of the received damage will be dealt extra to the foe that you currently attack.

2) Radiant Shield
Reflect the Light with your Shield to create a Ray of Light to attack with it your foes, causes Blinding. Range 1200

3) Valiant Defender
Block attacks and get healed whenever you block an attack with this Skill and gain a random Boon

Engineer

AA
1) Rusty Bash
Hit your foe with your shield, causing randomous conditions among poison, bleeding, weakness or torment.

2) Barrier Device
Activate a Barrier Field Turret that holds only for a few seconds and automatically exlodes after its duration is over. Using this Skill causes also your Utility Skill Turrets to receive Protection in that time. In the time that Barrier Field is up, enemies can’t enter that Barrier Field, but you alos can’t leave it. The Barrier Field will absorb Projectiles, but not Ground Target Skills that damage from the ground, like Marks for example.

3) Explosive Bash
You rush towards your fow with some dynamite on the frotn of your Shield, lettign it explode on touch with your foe, cause you to knock your target back and cause at the spot of collision an AoE Explosion that causes burning.

There is a reason that it is not done and that is because some weapons are not designed to be used in the primary hand – foci, shields, and warhorns for example.

Also,
how would a warrior wielding two shields look like?
That’s not really “historical correct” (even though magic isn’t either).

Thats nonsense and you know it.
There’s no reason not to add through this change some new build options for the classes that ckittene these 4 weapons.

If they add now every now and then some new Utility Skills, or just make the Offhand Weapons also useable for Main Hand makes no difference at all.
Both ways would improve the Build Diversity of GW2 and thats everything, what matters and not such thought out nonsense “design rules” saying that weapon X must be used only as offhand – thats plain just childish thinking …

If I can wield a Torch in a left hand, then I can wield it also with my right hand – so plain simple can reasoning be and its just Anets game design, that the left hand is used for Main Hand Skills and the right hand for offhand skills.

Theres nothing telling about it, that Shields, Torches, Focus and Warhorns must be used only as Support Weapon, only because you maybe have not the creativity thats lacking here, to think about skills, how those weapons could also be used as an active Main Hand Weapon perhaps, which is no reason at all to be against improving Build Diversity for all Classes.

This falls also under the category of – let everyone play how they want.
If I would like to play a Warrior/Guardian/Engineer for example rather with an offensive stylized Shield Gameplay, then this should be just realistically possible.
We are talking here about 1 hand weapons and my character should be free to decide, in which hand he uses which weapon.

This childish reason of yours is like saying, everyone should use fork and knife only with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand, because its thought so to use them that way (by design)
But there are also righthanded forks and lefthanded knifes, which you ckittene the other way around for the people, which need it that way or are somehow used it that way to make usage of these tools in that way whyever

@ Lana:
You answer your own question by yourself, even its historically not used to see that, we play still a fantasy game, with magic spells, so not everything in this game must be 100% historically correct.
But look at this picture

Actually there is a reason why in the past, lefthanded people where forced to become righthanded. If you have a lefthanded soldier who hold his sword in left hand and shield in right hand, he can’t fight with a righthanded soldier, because it’s sword versus sword and shield versus shield. That’s why everyone has to hold his sword in righthand, and shield in lefthand.
I can understand your concern about achievment points, but maybe it’s something like Dolyak slayer in WwW, we’re not supposed to have it now, it’s a long term goal….

Edit: Torch in main hand could be very cool for Ele. It could give an Indiana Jones style to any medium-weight class, and engineers really need new weapons.

Gettign the achievements just a slightly more comfortable is just only a nice side effect for me by making that suggestion.
The main reason why I suggest this here is still because I’d like to see these weapons also having a more offensive style of gameplay, adding with this a bit more build diversity (some new skills)

The WvW Achievements are a completely different topic, those achievements were already massively flawed by their whole design from the begin on of this game, because the designer who was responsible for those achievements obviously never has made the math with his proposed numbers for the achievenents to see, how flawed those achievements all are and are in dire need of gettign some 0’s erased or the game gettign improved to fasted up somehow the point gain towards those achievements, so that we can reach the max ranks quicker and not first in like 15+ years or longer if we’d do something in the game in that time for 24/7 >.<

PS: and oh please, don’t derail this thread please into a silly game balance discussion, thats not the topic here, nor our job to think about in the first place.

With this Suggestion are meant the Torch, the Shield, the Focus and the Warhorn.

There is a reason all of those are designated “off-hand” items: because they aren’t even really weapons. At least shield (and torch somewhat) makes sense to carry into battle. Focus and warhorn already take some suspension of disbelief as it is. I guess focus maybe could work because it’s basically just a conduit for magic (as much as sceptre or staff are, anyway). Warhorn, though? Really? No one should be dual-wielding warhorns — you are gearing up for warfare, not auditioning for a marching band.
Each of these only make sense when paired with an actual striking weapon that can conceivably deal damage. As a primary “weapon” they are just nonsense.

Its a huge weapon skill design flaw, to make these weapons only useable as offhand weapons.

You have just asserted this, without backing it up. I don’t see how this is a flaw at all, let alone a “huge” one.

These 4 weapons should be also useable for all classes

What? WHY? This is a non sequitur that does not follow from your original topic. Why do all professions need a warhorn? Again, you are just making assertions without backing it up.

so that you can deal also with these weapons some serious damage to get easier with them the killing blows.

No one in their right mind should be wielding two shields or two musical instruments with the intention of dealing “some serious damage.”
The achievement from killing blows is actually the only substantial point you have raised in defense of your idea, but it is trivial at best. Why should anyone be in a rush to rack up killing blows with a shield? ArenaNet shouldn’t be designing new weapon functionality and skills around this silly achievement.

Yes, changign this bad situation would mean to implement a few new weapon skills

Lol, this is not a “bad situation” at all. You are really blowing this out of proportion.

I would love to see some weapons become usable by more professions, so we can get more variety of skills, but forcing a warhorn into everyone’s main hand is not a good way to do it.

@ Fyre

They are weapons, you wield them in combat and everythign that you wield in combat can be seen as a weapon, otherwise they be called “Offhand Tools”, but in the end, each weapon is just a “tool”, a tool to kill somebody, regardless how you see it.

You say that they are as primary weapon nonsense, because you just lack in the creativery to think out skills for them, you just aren’t able to imagine, how these weapons could work as primary weapons, thats all.

Focus is total simple, because its anyway just a magical weapon, thats used by the scholar classes Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer and the magical soldier class, the Guardian, their skills are all just based only on magic spells.
its together with the shield the absolute most simplest weapon to give them also weapon skills for the main hand.

Torch requires just a little bit creativity to just come up with unique skills that aren’t too similar and Warhorn is the only creativity challenge, but in a game thats full of magic spells and special skills, this shouldn’t be of such a big problem.

And I didn’t made an assertion, I just said my opinion there and I back it up, if you want to see it that way with the reason of realism, that a one handed item simply can be wielded in any hand that you want, Its totally ridiculous to make there a limitation and just makes no sense at all. If I wield my torch now with my left or my right hand, is total up to me and in regard of which coice i made, it should change my weapon skills of the Torch to either be of more offensive, or more supportive type in that case

Shouldn’t be so hard to understand that it belongs to realism to be able to wield a 1handed weapon in any hand that you want.

You next quote from me is a missing words-typo, thats why it seems to look so out of context and topic to you.
That would have been the correct sentence:

These 4 weapons should be also useable as Main Hand Weapons for all classes, that can make use of them

I think those parts got somehow lost without me noticing it, when I formatted my text.

I’ll come up with some easy next examples for the Focus in the next posting.

PS: Has anyone of you at all ever thought about it, that Anet could also simply lock those weapons out from being dual wielded, if you decide to use them as Main hand Weapon?? I guess not, nobody here has thought about that easy solution for just 1 Cent that when you main hand a shield, that you couldn’t use it at the same tiem for Offhand and vice versa, if thats so much of a problem for many…

My Main Goal is just gettign those weapons as main hand weapon, my suggesstion is not really about dual wielding those weapons, even if it would be just a side effect from my suggestion. So Id personally have no problems with it, if anet would lock those weapons out from being able to dual wielded.
I want just only the freedom to decide, if i use those weapons with my main or my offhand and the improvement of build diversity that comes from that..

While I don’t think that the OP’s suggestion is a good one, I would like to say that I could easily see a warhorn as main hand weapon for a Mesmer. First skill can just be a sonic blast type of attack, the second and third can work like the Ranger warhorn skill that summons birds to attack a target by having phantasmal animals come in to attack when called.

Dual focus and torch? I guess I can see that.

Main hand shields? No, that’s really not a good idea. Sorry, it’s just not. And I’d love to play a warrior with a shield in the main hand, and a sword in the left (and green armor).

i don’t role play just for the looks, the skills and weapons need to fit the character just as much.

nice idea! dual wielding shields wouldn’t make much sense but there is potential to add new skills to existing weapons, simply by swapping “sword/main – shield/off” to “sword/off – shield/main” .
you wouldn’t have to change the animation for storing the shield.

basically different stances:

sword/warhorn is offensive
warhorn/sword is support

just an example though.
