Suggestion: How to make Spears work
As much as I want Spear to be a thing, it seems unlikely that they’ll introduce new weapon sets before they’ve finished porting current sets.
I get that technically Spear isn’t a new set, but at the same time it kind of is.

Ok. Spears. 5 races. 2 handed wep. So 5 basic skills. 9 professions (not all.. sure. so let say 4 professions rev war guard and engi) so 4 professions x 5 races × 5 skills= 100 new movesets(assuming male and female have the same moveset if not 200) that require a lot of work + resolving the spear double slot/use problem. All so we can have spears on land. Gl with this…
Why only spears? Why not tridents? Why not spear guns?
I think there is potential there, but would want them to get all current weapons to all professions first through upcoming elite specs.

Tridents as a weapon would be spears limited to stabbing. And spearguns would be rifles.
Except… greatswords can shoot power beams and daggers can fling fire. This is a fantasy game, no need to limit possibilities. Besides, often Warrior = Gladiator, and gladiators have been depicted as using tridents.
Maybe the spear gun becomes another ranged weapon for an Engineer? Flame, Explosive & Sticky “Javelins”? I dunno.

And spears is just staves with pointy ends. Meaning, we got them already.

and as much as i will never want to say it, you’re probably right. who wants a spear that performs like a hammer or melee staff? I want to feel like Zhao Yun in the middle of the battle of red cliff, i don’t want them to reskin staves or repurpose greatswords. if they do make spears terrestrial, it should have it’s own place.

What’s your point exactly? With the elite specializations our classes could use more weapons. A necro with a greatsword doesn’t have the same moves and skills as a warrior – they had to animate it. They’re working on the next expansion and have to deliver some new features – and it’s their decision which weapons they’ll implement or switch to other classes.
It’s not like they’re being paid for their work or something… /sarcastic

Those are when wielded by casters. The item isnt used for its sharp edge, but instead for its magic directioning

My point is… you’ll have this only with a Big release like HoT exp maybe when we fight S …. gl with this if you want this now
I would still love to see land-Spears! Been waiting for Spears ever since Beta...
Hopefully we’ll get it in the next expansion!
New weapon types are like new races. Sounds good on paper but ads almost nothing to the game.
New weapon types are like new races. Sounds good on paper but ads almost nothing to the game.
So you’re saying a Necromancer with Daggers is EXACTLY as good as a Necromancer with the Staff? Nothing new there?
And a Warrior a Longbow does EXACTLY the same stuff as a warrior with a Shield? Also no differences there?
What is exactly was your point when you said that a new weapon adds nothing to the game?
Because I will tell you what it adds to the game:
A complete new playstyle for a class that wields it.
Do you think an elementalist with 2 daggers plays the same as a Tempest with a scepter and a warhorn?
Now, I don’t often bash people, but your argument made ZERO sense

You do realise that there is much more work with elite specs? Spears could bring up a new, fresh alternative for two handed weapons.
I am sure that warrior, guardian and ranger could have those for sure (Rev not really as they already have staves to fit the role of a pole weapon)
By the way: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Polearm
Also in bank wardrobe you can see a vendor quality weapon that is simply called “Polearm” in spear section.
In that category there are both weapons that look like harpoons and spears that would 100% fit being used on land… so the case of new weapon models is practicaly already done.
Two things that are left, is to implement new abilities and animations. I believe that it takes work as well but heck… I’d even pay for it to use a spear in melee combat. It was one of the reasons I picked GW2 (but later I was dissapointed when I found out that this weapon is for underwater combat.)

‘pay for it’ – exactly. I would, too.
Could add it to an expansion.
Since its just a playstyle and not a powerlevel, it’s just an extra, not a P2W thing

It does not if you fail to read the very first word in my post.

“New”
And why would a new weapon type not add anything. Same argument I gave before. What if the dagger didnt exist prior to an expansion, and the people would ask for it. And you said then a new weapon wouldnt add anything new. Would you still, now, make that same assertion?

Yes. This is a lot of work for 2-5 skills which they can add just by reusing already existing weapons.
New weapon types are like new races. Sounds good on paper but ads almost nothing to the game.
really? a quick polearm like spear adds nothing?

We already have 2 handed sticks with 5 weapon skills.
I wonder why some people are so against adding new stuff? It’s not like they have to program it, the Devs have the final word and I am almost certain that a new weapon might show up sooner or later and a polearm might be the first in line.
Now back to the topic. In the worst possible scenario of not getting polearms, at least I’d enjoy to have a possibility to transmute spear skins onto staves.
P.S.
Post above me is a bait :v

Okay, if you’re not gonna contribute anything to the discussion I’m just gonna label this as bait.
Adding a new weapon with 2-5 new skills is no different from adding an existing weapon with 2-5 new skills.
I wonder why some people are so against adding new stuff?
Probably because “2 handed stick” weapon type already exists
Adding a new weapon with 2-5 new skills is no different from adding an existing weapon with 2-5 new skills.
Except that for the new weapon you will have to change loot tables and add new recipes and make separate skins for them. Oh and new weapon type will be locked behind only couple of specs so it will be almost useless for a lot of people.

As I said in the MAIN TOPIC!!: You can use the spear skins so that argument of yours is out of the window. The new weapon type will be locked behind some specs.. well guess what bud, some weapons already are locked behind certain specs. Ever seen a necromancer with a rifle? I havent.
The only argument you’re making WORTH CONSIDERING is the loot table and honestly, thats not even that big a deal. Recipes? remember during LS1, and LS2, and HOT, any idea how many recipes they pumped out in that time? If you ask me, thats not that big a deal either.

How many people don’t utilize all 5 character slots, if not more? If 2-3 have it natively, and 2-3 more come with elite specs, please tell me HOW it will be useless for a lot of people, when the majority of the people will have at least 1 of the classes that can use it?

I still can’t see how reinventing the wheel is better than using already existing stuff.
Personally, I would rather see land weapons like dagger being used underwater, or ANY other weapons for that mater.
Underwater combat is kind of lacking ATM, and instead of fixing it, A-net have pretty much abandoned it.
As for spears on land, you are not suggesting anything new.
It has been asked for a long time, since the polearm/spear is a common medieval melee weapon that the game haven’t made use off. And since there are already tons of assets for spears that remain unused because of the underwater fiasco, people are keep asking for them to go on land.
As much as I want Spear to be a thing, it seems unlikely that they’ll introduce new weapon sets before they’ve finished porting current sets.
I get that technically Spear isn’t a new set, but at the same time it kind of is.
I want to feel like Zhao Yun in the middle of the battle of red cliff, i don’t want them to reskin staves or repurpose greatswords. if they do make spears terrestrial, it should have it’s own place.
I realized this fantasy by rolling Thief, going Daredevil, grabbing the Lightward Battlestaff skin, and going to town.
It’s the closest we get… And by god is it beautiful.
On topic:
I’d love to see spears, but they’d have to create probably 10 to 15 new animations for the weapon for 5 different races, unless Sylvari and Norns share human ones, in that case it’s still 3 races, which makes it about 30 to 45 new animations at best, and 50 to 75 at worst. My math is way off, but you get the idea…
They won’t have to create animations for every class, as they have a habit of re-using animations all over the place across classes with different effects surrounding them every time. They could even lessen the work by re-purposing some Revenant and Daredevil staff animations.
I just don’t see them putting in the effort to do that…
The problem isn’t the skills (granted it appears to be for the professions team when it comes to balancing and gameplay). The real issue is the assets that come with bringing in new weapons to the game.
Consider the greatsword, the main 2h melee weapon. Look at every skin, all possible loot table entries, the crafting recipes, MF updates, legendaries, the list of what needs an update just keeps on going. Frankly, if ANet is adamant about not bringing the spear itself to terrestrial combat, an equivalent is just as unlikely considering the similarities.

They could already scrap Daredevil’s and Revenant’s animations in order to make ones for polearms.
It would be about 7 animations per race: 3 for AA and 1 for each skill up to fifth slot

Because its not reinventing the weel. Its a new weapon type, thus a new playstyle. A new weapon increase the amounts of windows of oppertunity.
But you know what, if you have a personal veto with new weapons, please, by all means, when a new weapon enters the grid, dont use it

Its the same amount of effort they’d have to put into a specialization. So they could do it with an expansion. Its not a powercreep, so its not p2w

Does not matter. They can put rifle skills on a greatswords if they want to. Pretty sure they can give warrior a staff, add some “Bash” and “Poke” skills and make a couple thematic skins to go with it and everyone will be happy. Definitely happier than if anet wastes months and months on a new weapon type that is used by 2-3 elite specs at best.
Ok so imagine this: after using sword leap to bridge a chasm, you end up with hundreds of small mobs shooting ranged barbs at u. You switch stances and go into defensive bunker mode similar to shield stance, with ur offhand stave/javelin swinging wildly in circular motion that reflects the missiles coming at u, thus getting rid of those mobs by just activating a single skill once. Also can imagine a charged shot similar to rifle f1 or whatever that throws the spear an impossibly far distance and deals huge damage as well as giving tons of bleed stacks and stunning the target. If your having a hard time visualising this there’s this epic Ancient Greece movie where Achilles throws his spear and it sales for a mile or so before punching through someone’s back and killing them instantly. Nuff said
No really though I’d like to see some kind of this sharp pointy object being wielded by warriors, who cares if it takes them months to conceptualize it. I just want an offhand skill that actually does something diff than just block attacks, even if it’s an unexpected reflect skill and let’s face it even whirling axe as we have it looks like it could be capable of reflects, but it’s not and thus why carry axe offhand over others
(edited by nagr.1593)
Never understood why Arenanet did not make spears (or similar) as land base weapons. The opening posts seems to make sense to me.
Historically, spears come in two basic forms; A heavy thrusting spear used with two hands. A lighter spear used in conjunction with a shield, that could be used in melee or thrown as a javelin.

NO! just no. Look up some quarterstaff combat, or pokearm combat. You do NOT want to wield staffs for that! just look at the fantasy-themed staffs and imagine using that in combat.. Just.. NO.. please.. no.. please imagine what that would look like and get it through your skull that there is no realm of possibility that a staff and a polearm or spear can overlap in usage. its enough of a sin what they did to the daredevil. Maybe if they DO add this new weapon type they can change it on the thieves as well to be changed to the new weapon type.
