[Suggestion] Human Male Hairstyles
you know, i actually have played dragon’s dogma. i put it in again after i read your post to check it out and i honestly forgot just how cool the create-a-character mode is! guild wars really could take some inspiration from that game when it comes to the sheer quantity of different hair/beard styles.
man, i forgot just how friggin’ fun that game is. even after all these years… lol
It really is a fun game and worth a play if you’ve never played it.
Here are a couple more good screencaps I found. The first two use the same page, but the hairstyles shown are pretty nice (although female one is pretty basic). However, I do want Anet to take note of hairstyle 59, which are really cool ponytailed dreadlocks. And then the third pic just showcases yet another cool beardstyle that humans are more than capable of having. Just because it has a couple of small braids doesn’t make it exclusive to only norn.
i could totally use that beard in the last pic, lol.
and correct me if i’m wrong, leviathan, but isn’t there a varian ponytail in dragon’s dogma, too? haha, i’m surprised you haven’t mentioned that yet. my character in that game looks awesome, though. he’s tough, gruff, buff, and always ready to kill things! i made him in gw2, but of course, i made him a norn since obviously the humans weren’t gonna cut it
I’m gonna go ahead and bump this because there are lots of good ideas here and I dislike seeing all the really cool-looking hairstyles go to the norn while humans are left with the table scraps of creativity.
I’ll post more ideas and pics when I have a bit more time, but I really like what I’m seeing so far. Let’s keep ’em coming!
there are tons of “messy” hairstyles and the long hair clips terrible with a lot of armor and outfits.
I’d love to have clean buns for male characters (norn and human alike), to show off long hair without making it impractical for fighting and reduce the clipping issues.
A simple cinnamon, LWB, Nautilus or celtic bun looks clean and nice and can be worn either with a stick, fork (there are manly and unisex hairsticks, for example the one made of antler or bone) or just by hidden pins.
come on, Anet! do me a favor and give me long hair without the clipping issue! buzz cut just isn’t that fantasy like.

i totally agree that there are certain types of buns that men can pull off, like this guy. unfortunately, long hair will probably always clip. it’d be really hard for them to fix that considering it would clip differently with different armors. that’s why putting on certain headgear like the witch hat just makes your character totally bald (which looks stupid but whatever). hell, there are some helmets that completely shave the beard off of my norn. what’s up with that?
also a little off-topic, but this pic also reminded me that i wish you could actually wear certain pieces of jewelry, like earrings. considering a lot of players hide their helmets, i don’t think it would cause too many clipping problems.
but that’s a topic for another thread. more human male hairstyles please! good ones!

I’d call that hairstyle a bit messy… I’d like a more smooth hairstyle without single strands or breads/dreads hanging out. I like dreads and i like open hair, but a clean and practical longhair hairstyle for men would be nice.
like this for example (btw the hair in this bun goes down to the feet, so it probably that a bun with shorter hair (perhaps to the hips?) would be much smaller).
a bun also gives the possibility to have the character longhaired, while keeping the hair compact, contained and “short” and so minimise clipping, since such a bun is pretty flat and can easily be contained under a helmet.
(and guys, that keep their hair healthy and out of the way during work instead of a letting it get all tangled, are awesome. )

Here are another bunch of pics from WoW’s blood elf hairstyles. Once again, Anet, take note of that wild ponytail hairstyle in the top right corner! Also, humans don’t have a good spikey type of hair. I mean, it doesn’t have to be as crazy as the charr’s super saiyan hair, but something similar to the two in the upper leftish corner would be nice.
And look at those goatees. We need way more beard options for humans. I know a lot of people would like to see more full-beard styles (me included), but why can’t we have something small and simple like these as well? No extra stubble, no mustache, just a simple chin tuft.
Granted, the graphics in WoW are horribly outdated. I’ve never even played it nor do I have the desire to, but I still appreciate the creativeness and variety offered in their hairstyles.
i guess i’ll add some wow references as well. i really like the back-spiked hairstyle, though i think i’d rather have the sideburns be facial hair instead of a part of the hair. and in the lower right corner of the first pic there’s another good example of a simple chin goatee with nothing extra to mess with it.
and look, i even threw in a couple more pics that show off leviathan’s favorite hairstyle lol (you’re welcome)! it is a pretty cool hairstyle afterall. and the last pic shows it off at a really nice angle (even if the graphics are primitive).

Much appreciated, RumRunner. At least WoW’s cinematics are nicely rendered…

In addition to the other dreadlocks that are already here, I’d like to see some where the hair is tied up like this. Also, it’d be cool if they had some of the locks of hair sun-bleached to give it some nice looking highlights.
I’ve been thinking for a while to change the hair for ma human guardian but still did’t do it, because the human male styles in the hair-make-over-kits weren’t very awesome.
I picked the shoulder-long hair in character creation, but it clips with like almost all armor…but having a shorthaired male character is kind of sad.
A man that can look after their appearance and can take care for his hair to be long and healthy is probably a not completely uncapable person.
a clean bunned hairstyle would be soo awesome.
And topknots are also cool for people that want a more Canthan look.
come on Anet, make it happen.
(edited by Oreithyia.3064)
Doesn’t mean that if some hair styles are not that popular, they should get rid of them. It’s actually more interesting to see some ugly characters once in a while than the same beauty pageants 24/7.
Also, pls fix the clipping, my thief had that shoulder length hair style for ages and eventually decided to change it as it clips through everything.
while I actually really enjoy my male human being a “pretty boy” It’s because 1.) he’s a mesmer and 2.) I tried to make him look more ascalonian inspired.
I would love to see more options for humans, definitely a little more tribal stuff especially with them about to add druid into the game (druids were krytan humans) and I feel like it would let people be able to look a little more elonian, and not just ascalonian/canthan(ish)
Also I was discussing the other day with some of my guildies how I felt humans would have taken a few cultural indicators over time from other races, or at least humans that aren’t directly within the kingdom of kryta.
Like why wouldn’t some humans take norn influence? at least the ones living closer to the shiverpeaks.
the discussion came up when I Was grabby handing over some of the norn cultural armor wishing we had a rep system to get the armor for other races.
In addition to dreadlocks, which seem to be a cross-gender longing for most of us human players (seriously, charr and asura are massively hogging the dreads.), I’ll also throw in for long styles.
I have a Luxon-descended Krytan whom I’ve modeled after Tuvan and Mongolian faces and styles. It drives me nuts, I fully and freely admit, that whenever my toddler is rocking out to “Huun Huur Tu” (his preferred throat singing band. Don’t ask. If it makes kids sleep you listen to anything. ANYTHING.), one of the singers has almost got my guy’s hair. The sleeked back short topknot style? Except his is this awesome long braid of black hair tied off high with it shaved on either side. It looks great. My guy’s look wimpy in comparison.
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/i0djHJBAP3U/maxresdefault.jpg
That guy. The hair streams down his back in a braid. One of his other bandmates also has long braided hair and it looks great.
So dreads, and some LONG styles, preferably braided, messy, ponytailed in some way.
.. and more than one colour channel. Give me some silver pleeeaaase.
Lord Ahrwit Valdyr/Isambard FitzValdyr/many more…

Unless I missed something, I don’t think anyone suggested they remove any of the hairstyles already in the game. I agree on your beauty pageant comment, though, which emphasizes the point that there are a bit too many “pretty boy” hairstyles compared to more rugged styles.
seriously, charr and asura are massively hogging the dreads.
This is true.

Not sure where you drew that assumption, but I don’t think anyone in this thread ever suggested Anet get rid of hairstyles. DarksunG here actually said quite the opposite…
They absolutely need some masculine/kitten hairstyles & faces. We get in Anet, you like boyband/metro/effeminate/GQ hairstyles & faces. & you can have them in there. but instead of having it be 85% pretty-boy could it be at least 60/40?
They may be ugly boy-band/pretty-boy cuts, but the last thing I’d want Anet to do would be to take away customization options. That’s counterproductive and not what I’m suggesting at all. I merely would like them to start incorporating a greater variety of hairstyle options. They’ve been incredibly creative with the hairstyles in the original Guild Wars, so I’m confident they could bring some of that creativity over to Guild Wars 2 if they put forth the effort. I just created this thread to give the community a way to offer Anet some ideas for cool unique hairstyles for our human males.
Like these for example…
I just don’t like the 80-90’s bland hairstyles. Some more modern short and long hairstyles please.
And not the hobo half bald ragged beard viking looks pls. Males in this game are already ugly and lacking sexy options compared to the options females have in this game.
Think John Stamos and Chris Pratt and the Hemsworth and Chris Evans pls.
Given that the berserker has been officially revealed as the warrior’s elite spec, I think now more than ever we need hairstyles more suited for such a profession. I’m not so sure that the influx of pretty boy, smooth and glossy hairstyles is very fitting for a berserker. To each their own I suppose, but there’s definitely a shortage of barbarian themed hairstyles (which may be attributed to the norn taking them all).

You know, I was just thinking the same thing. We’re gonna have a lot of fabulous looking berserkers out there, lol. Some of the long hairs in this pic would be cool for berserkers.
Hopefully Anet will include with HoT a handful of new hairstyles for not only human males, but for all races and genders (human males are just the ones that need it most).

i agree with both of you. we could really use some more rugged longish hairstyles (and beards!) to fit the theme of a berserker. not to say a berserker can’t be gorgeous, lol. it’s just that i’d rather have the option to not have a pretty boy setting himself on fire.
i want my enemies to fear me, not ask me for an autograph
Found THIS comment from a mod on another thread…
However, if there are new hairstyle types, or styles not available for your character’s gender and/or race, that you would like to see in the game, please feel free to suggest them in a new thread.
Yo! That’s what this thread is for! I know mods browse these things every so often, so I hope they’ve been taking a look here and maybe even drawing some ideas for potential new hairstyles for our male humans! Like… Oh, I dunno, THIS ONE??? Heh!
Let’s keep the ideas coming, folks! Or if no new ones come up, that’s okay, too (there’re a lot of good ones in here already). I’ll just continue to remind Anet how awesome it would be to have a hairstyle like King Varian’s in GW!
I checked it out on Wikipedia and saw this paragraph:
“Although Dragon’s Dogma does not feature a direct multiplayer mode, the developers have revealed that players can compete online with asynchronous encounters called Events via Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network.”
It seems to me that true MMO’s with hundreds of avatars milling around just can’t give you as full customization because all the details need to be conveyed to other players. They can give you the most beautiful creation screen in the world and then you won’t look anything like you designed once in game.
Case in point: ArcheAge character design vs. appearance in game on high settings (note the severe change to face structure, converting leanly handsome into thinly weasel like):
Accidentally put my reply on the loc thread (side note, locs is a better name, dreadlocks has racist origins), but seriously, love all these suggestions.

I keep thinking about this thread, I want more good looking male human stuff >_< These are the best I’ve been able to do and it took A LOOOOOOT of slider dragging and time to get them to look like not-babies.

I feel ya, man. That’s why I’m doing my best to keep this thread alive, active, positive, and (most of all) constructive with the hopes that Anet will draw inspiration from it.
I’m reeeally hoping Anet added a handful of new character creation options in HoT (not just for humans, either), though they haven’t said ANYthing in relation to that. And I dunno if that’s just Anet being their typical quiet selves or if it’s something they just haven’t mentioned (since I know they can’t reveal everything about the expansion). I certainly hope it’s the latter, but I won’t get my hopes too high. Again as I’ve mentioned this before, they added new hairstyles/faces in the expansion packs for the original Guild Wars, so I don’t see why they can’t do that here. I’d honestly feel a little cheated if absolutely nothing new was added in that department…
There are some great ones in the self style kit (a black lion key dropped today and I got one. Was intending to buy one anyway so I’ll buy more keys in place of the kit during my next transaction cycle) though Asura male and female human hair seems like the best.
The last one is an exclusive face but I included because I think it’s cute ^_^

Um, not sure what kind of a point you’re trying to make here, given that you’re showing a human female and a couple of asura. If you’re implying that other races have better options than male humans then I totally agree.
seriously, charr and asura are massively hogging the dreads.
They certainly are, my friend. The asura with the headband and dreads would’ve looked really cool on humans.
(edited by Leviathan.6327)
In addition to the dreadlocks we’ve already got here, I think it’d be cool to have some styles that are decorated with things like beads, ties, seashells, etc. Again, these can all be unisex as well.
Other races have already been getting hairstyles that include decorations in them, like asura, norn, and charr. Let’s get some accessories for the humans as well, including males!
Since I’m balding, I want to apply this condition onto my characters. I would like to have all the 7 stages of hair recession on the norwood scale to be included in the human hairstyle please.
Here are some more styles of dreadlocks that would look great on human males. I’d like to see all of these one day, but the top-right is my fav. I love how it has some stray locs that drape over the shoulders.
Human dudes need better styles! Here’s hoping HoT brings a few to the table.
Lumpy, I’m sure you’re being facetious, but I’d love that option too, for both sexes. It’d be nice to have a good shorn cut for both. I had such a stressful time making my latest character (a black female norn) and had NO appropriate styles (except for the AWFUL locs, why are they shiny!?) so I wanted to make her bald. But… side note, can we please adjust ears on humans? They look like elephant ears.

ikr? whoever heard of shiny dreads, man. lots of great ideas for those in here, anet (from seabreeze mostly, nice finds). i sure hope they’re taking some notes. charr and asura aren’t the only races capable of growing cool dreads, you know. pirates look much better when their hair isn’t ultra fab.
and now that you mention it, an ear slider for humans would be pretty nice to have, too.
Whatever new hairstyles we get, I really hope they’ll have good physics. Perhaps the update to the wings shows the sort of stuff that can be done with hair.
Not that dreads should ripple silkily in the wind, but they should at least have some bounce and individual strand movement.
This is something I just thought of that still relates to hairstyles…
When it comes to hairstyles with accessories (and this goes for all races and genders), I’d like for them to give us the option to choose from our color palette (with all the colors we’ve currently unlocked) rather than being locked in to their extremely limited selection on the character creation menu. It’d also be great if we had the option to change the accessory color at any time without having to consume a hairstyle/makeover kit. It’s understandable to have to use a kit if you want an entirely different hair color, but for hair ties, bandannas, and whatnot? That shouldn’t require the use of kits.
They could easily fit a hair accessory slot at the upper right or lower left corner of the dye selection panel of the hero tab. If the character’s hairstyle doesn’t have an accessory, then it can just be left blank similar to if a character does not have an outfit equipped yet there is still a dye slot for it. And they could implement it in the same way the armor is currently, where in the character creation process you only have that small selection of dyes to choose from. Once the character is created, however, you can go into the dye panel and choose from all the dyes you have unlocked thus far.
Color schemes can change many times for certain characters throughout the course of their gameplay, so it’d be nice to be able to alter hairstyle accessories to go along with these changes.

i can totally get behind this. maybe they could also give certain accessories more dye channels instead of just one for all of them. like if a headband has a pattern or something. if they implemented something like this, it would give them more freedom to create hairstyles with accessories similar to many of the hairstyles in the original guild wars.
and i’ve always wished we could change accessory color at anytime. i hate being locked in to their tiny color palette.
^ I absolutely love the idea of creating a separate dye panel for hair accessories, especially if we start getting hairstyles with more intricate accessories like some of the dreadlocks suggested with multi-colored beads and wraps. Anet should actually totally separate accessory color and hair color, treating the former as armor dye.
Awesome idea, Leviathan! I totally dig it!

Thanks! We would definitely need some more dye channels if Anet included hairstyles like some of the ones you’ve suggested, Seabreeze. Some of the decorations that go into dreads look really cool, and would benefit greatly from being able to have each of those colors altered.
I wonder if there’s an underlying reason why we can’t do that now? Again, I mostly think it’s because accessories are a part of the hairstyle and thus cannot be changed without a hairstyle kit. Or maybe it’s because they seem to be implementing more hairstyles that use the accessory color as highlights, and they don’t want that to be freely altered (though I don’t see why that should be a big deal either). If that were the case, then they should just add a secondary hair color option.
I think there need to be three color swatches like what armors have but with hair. In general of course not just for dudes.

Oh yeah, of course (some armors even have 4 swatches). And not just for humans either. This is something that would benefit all races and genders!
you know, i’ve always thought the multiplayer characters in the assassin’s creed games have had some pretty cool designs. check out the dreads on these guys. i’d love to have dreads that were decorated with beads/ties/feathers or whatever. and to be able to individually die them from my color palette like Leviathan’s suggestion.
again, pirates do exist in the world of guild wars. so it’d be nice to have some hairstyles that were more gruff and “pirate-like.”
Lol, I have said this many, many times: gratuitous rockabilly pompadour for human males!
I do agree though that there’s not much to choose from for their hair. It’s also disappointing that you can’t put very much age on them. I wanted one of my characters to have serious bags/wrinkles under his eyes, and I couldn’t really do it the way I wanted, but I have seen NPC men in the game who look very worn and ragged, like some of the soldiers – not elderly, but maybe 40s – 50s.

OT: Additional Norn male hairstyles would definitely be a plus based on the suggestions which have been posted in this thread. I felt the exclusive ones in the makeover kits were a bit underwhelming.
Edit: Other than that, the suggestions in this thread are good and I hope the styles are implimented at some point.
I found someone’s custom renders of King Varian and they look pretty good. I could see a hairstyle like this for male humans making it into GW eventually. Anet just needs to make it happen. One can only hope…
On a side note, custom scars for all races would be a neat feature to add in the future. And I mean as a separate thing, not just included with the face as we currently have. That way we can stop getting 3 duplicate faces in the total makeover kits with only slight differences (like one has wrinkles, and the other one has a scar or something). But given that we already have faces that do have scars, I doubt this will ever see fruition.
im gonna help keep this thread alive because i feel there are some really good suggestions in here that anet could use should they decide to, because they really do need to step it up with their human male hairstyles. so far, most of the human males right now (including their current face options) make this game look like fab wars 2. super shiny, glossy, boy-band cuts. no bueno
and yes, leviathan, i equally think a king varian hairstyle would be cool as hell! varian is definitely not the only guy to rock that hairstyle, either. here’re another couple examples of it. yes, baiken is female, but that hairstyle is pretty unisex anyway. would look awesome on either but male humans desperately need some cool hairstyles to catch up with the other races.
I found some cool ponytailed dreads to contribute. It seems silly that after all these hairstyle kit updates humans still only have one set of dreads. Let’s throw in a little more variety there, Anet. There’re lots of ways to wear dreads, you know.

But they did. My thief is sporting pretty much that style, with minor differences and some toning down to look like real hair.
It’s still straight hair, though. I think a lot of this thread is asking for curls and frizz and dreads.

Um, no. That’s… not even close, really. They only thing that makes that hairstyle similar to Varian’s is the fact that they’re both ponytails, but they’re still vastly different. That ponytail is lower, much smaller and thinner, has a fabulously swooshy “S” shape, has one lock of hair in the front parted to one side, and is super glossy like most of the others. Once again, very pretty-boy fashion. Varian’s is thicker, longer, more wild, more spikey, unkempt, and just all-around way more bad@ss. Trust me, I tried that ponytail on my guardian and it looked awful. The edited screencap I made on the first page is more what I’m looking for.
Granted, Varian’s going a little Super Saiyan in this example here, but you should still get the general idea. Plus, I’ve provided plenty of other examples that clearly show how different his hairstyle is compared to the one you presented.
And if you think all people want is a little curls, frizz, and dreads, then you really didn’t look at all the suggestions posted here or you just lack creative vision (no offense, honestly). There are some fantastic suggestions here that would bring much needed variety into the human male hairstyles.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! I would love to see these implemented at some point. We’ve only got one dreadlocks hairstyle and it’s really lackluster, not to mention poorly modeled to be honest.
Also @ Donari: Sorry dude, but that hairstyle isn’t anything like the Varian one Leviathan is requesting. That’s like saying the afro hairstyle we currently have in the game is the same as the one’s that have been suggested in this thread.
