You’ll get the extra character slot and the extra $50 back in gems. $100 is less than my monthly cable bill. Also less than my phone bill. Even if new players are getting the core game free — won’t it be nice to have more people to play with? The two and a half years I’ve been playing has certainly been worth the original investment. It costs $150 to see freakin’ Taylor Swift. Would you rather have an expansion or go see Taylor Swift? Expecting mkittenred from Taylor Swift fans in 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

Nothing in the last year of development makes me believe that even 40$ would be a fair price for an expansion to this game. Ever since the megaserver I’ve been logging on to do my dailies and that’s it, hoping for some kind of change. And here it is, for a price greater than the original game itself. Wow.

You clearly have a higher income than some of us. We also value our money a bit higher than you. It’s great that you can spend money as freely as you want. My cell bill is $40 a month, the only cable I have is internet and that’s about $50 a month. My actual budget for things like games is incredibly small. I see practically no value in $50 bucks with no character slot. To suggest we all pay double that is to have no touch with reality.

Let’s break this down:
4000 Gems – $50
Character slot (800 Gems) – $10
These are a little less specific price wise
Miniature Revenant Rytlock (Most minis are 400 Gems each, some have been less, some more, so 400 Gems is reasonable)
Revenant Finisher (Finishers have fluctuated between 650 and 800 Gems. Because of the prestige and exclusivity I’m going with 800 Gems)
These are unprecidented
Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration (I have no way of accurately gauging what it might go for, so I’m guestimating based on Gem Store prices over all, and saying 800 Gems again)
Heart of Thorns Glider Skin (Skins for single items are all over the place, but back items are pretty solid. 500 Gems makes sense.)

Total Gems is 2500 which come out to roughly $31.25

So $50.00 + $10.00 + $31.25 = $91.25
Heart of Thorns is $7.75

Even if the values I arbitrarily chose are high the total price won’t exceed $19.99 which is what people want to pay for it anyway.

Ultimate is best value.

Well, that only works if you think $50 in gems is actually worth $50, or $25 for that matter. Also, comparing games to things with some of the worst entertainment value for your money around isn’t exactly saying a lot. Even short, overpriced video games can be made to look good if you compare them to going to the movies a few times.

Paying $100 for an expansion+guff is even worse value than paying $50 for purely an expansion. Also, I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: the original game being a great deal doesn’t make the value of the expansion any less bad. You aren’t under any obligation to give a company money for little product just because they gave you a lot of product for your money before. It doesn’t make sense to do.

Not everyone is earning (and spending) as much as you do. 100 euro (EU price for ultimate) where i live is a cable bill for half a year, and my monthly phone bill is below $10. And those are not the cheap options either. 100 euro is really a high price – even 45 euro for core is significant.

Actions, not words.

It’s only the wannabe veteran players complaining. Now i am against the HoT game also including the core game, but everything else people are complaining about is 100% laughable.

Veteran players…. lol.

I agree that if you are willing to pay the base price for HoT at 50 you might as well buy Ultimate for 100 – but I am not very happy with this setup anyway. It’s just plain greedy by Anet. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s clear they really really need money.

My fear is that this is a cathastriphic move though. This will not bring lots of new players to the game. And a huge portion of the faithful core players are being given the finger this way. Will this really lead to a sustainable environment for future gaming?

Also, the phrase “not be available as an upgrade and must be purchased as a full game package” confuses me. All are available with the core game aren’t they? So “no-upgrade” means we can’t add Ultimate to an excisting account or why is the “no-upgrade” used?

Yeah, I don’t get that one either, cause I had no trouble upgrading my account.

130 aus$ is a bit much to just drop on an expansion for me, regardless of it’s added value. It’ll be 130 aus$ I won’t have that week to make ends meet.

I bought the standard only. I don’t need 4000 gems any time soon, I have 13 character slots, a few that I’m not playing so I can happily delete one and replace it, and the other stuff such as the mini and all that hold no interest whatsoever for me.

So, Standard was just fine for me.

That being said, I do think that with them bundling in the base game and putting the whole thing at $50 might be a tad steep. Maybe have it $40 and charge an additional $20 to have the base game bundled in would have made more sense.

But it doesn’t bother me all that much, I want to play the expansion regardless.

It means if you buy HoT standard or deluxe, you will not be able to upgrade to HoT Ultimate.

The half price gem deal is a one time thing if you buy Ultimate now. Gems, if history is any guide, is NEVER on sale. Items in the shop sure but never the proxy currency. They can do this because it’s a bundle.

So using Kal’s numbers (I think he’s pricing the guild hall item and finisher high but) the Deluxe is a $41.25 value for $25 and the Ultimate is a $91.25 for $50. Even if you knock $10/800 gems off the cost of the finisher and guild hall swag you are still getting value for the packages.

But Astro is also right, not every one can swing $100 or $75 for these packages. I would love to spend the $100 but personally I’ll have a problem swinging the $50. Sure I do the Steam Sale twice a year but only $5 or less items. I may have to wait until the expansion is on sale in Target like I did with the original game before I get to play it.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

im sorry but thats the most laughable against there.

As a vet u should WANT ur game to grow, therefore u should be WANTING these sorts of things done to bring more new people into the game, as many stated.. not many can afford to buy 2 games in the same month which if they didnt do this combination would have happened, it’d of put players off coming.

Its a great move as a whole to bring such a thing in and to keep the gateway into the game light.

Ultimate is actually a reasonable deal. You drop an extra $50 on gems at the time of purchase, and in return you get a free character slot and some functionless things like skins and minis. $10 bonus at a minimum.

The Deluxe ($75) package is so awful it’s incredible. Basically, ANet will allow you to buy all those functionless extras for $15 if you’re also willing to buy a character slot at full price when you preorder. Who on the sales team suggested this garbage?

Ever since the megaserver I’ve been logging on to do my dailies and that’s it, hoping for some kind of change. And here it is, for a price greater than the original game itself. Wow.

Originally the base game cost $60 on release, and it’s $50 making it cheaper than the base game at release.

Also as someone who doesn’t have much of an income, I don’t see how the expac isn’t worth it, as my usual policy with games is to get about an hour of playtime per dollar. And so far i have over 2,000 hours on the base game and the expac is gonna add plenty more, well over 50 hours which IMO makes it pretty worth it.
