Suggestion: Lock traits for everyone
I like the idea. I was thinking of missing this experience (provided that it is actually well done and enjoyable) because I actually intend to play on main only.
But there still is a risk of many ignorant players of not even looking into their traits after the patch and/or flaming on the forums after the patch without checking the profession trainers.
I already posted something similar but I’ll say it again. I have 3 level 80’s that I hardly have any map completion on. I would have loved to map completed with these characters and go through the new system in place. But you’re gonna need a new character after the patch for that.
Either way, it’s a great feat., but one that won’t really affect me unfortunately, unless I create a new character.
I could see having pre-exiting non 80s pulled into the new system, and having them unlock traits like new characters. However, pre-existing 80s should definitely be allowed to simply have everything unlocked. People have their builds set and such already, and would throw a fit about having to go out and unlock something they already had. Remember the uproar about ascended? This would be similar.
That said, it is probably just easier for Anet to implement this system in the all or nothing sense. Rather than trying to code for the various pre-80 contingencies (of which there are sure to be many).
Still, I feel inclined to either remake, or buy a whole new char slot just to try this out. =)

Dude this is genius. I have between 5% and 50% world completion on most of my characters. This system would give me a cool reason to get that finally done.
You’ll already get to use the system to unlock the new traits. The only ones that will be automatically unlocked are the ones to which you currently have access.

We get to see the system for 40 traits, yes.
There are 480 already existing ones though which I’d like to “properly” play for as well
You know Anet would be really awesome if they gave us an option for all our individual pre-existing 80’s (characters) and ask us if we want to lock or unlock our traits. This way we get to choose which characters we want to lock and avoid locking all of them if you choose to lock just one character.
As long as I could unlock preexisting traits for free, I wouldn’t mind having them locked. That way I could play around for a bit, and if I get tired of it, I can just push a few buttons. Nothing lost.
I’d also like to have my traits locked.
In fact, I’d love it if everyone’s traits got locked.
Even though I only play WvW, it would mean populating PvE again from its current dead state.

I have an idea. Why don’t we just reset every character in the game to level 1? That’d repopulate those mid level zones again.

Nothing-to-comment-on-here. Move-along.
As people keep on missing the 0 copper thing even in this post, yes, giving a trait unlocker or even a trait locker via in-game mail would be a better idea than having people to look for 0 copper unlocks at a trainer.

No thanks…
I have 8×80′s, 1 of each class and am so happy I won’t after bother unlocking any of the traits I have already got.
It will probably take a while to unlock the 40 new Grandmaster traits via the open world. Also, if they set each 1 at 10 gold, that’s 400 gold if you want to take a short cut and avoid the open world.
I am just hoping for a good Dulfy guide and running around the open world/doing dungeons/fractals/3 headed wurm/Tequatl/jumping puzzles is a fairly painless process to unlock them.

As people keep on missing the 0 copper thing even in this post,
Just to note, I want to make it clear that I didn’t miss that portion of the initial idea.
My response was to a comment that it should be taken a step further and just lock all traits to all players, implying no free work-around for those who don’t want to go out and hunt down all the traits they’ve already been playing with for over a year.
perhaps they can make it optional, and offer some extra reward for unlocking every skill (that is obtainable in other ways). I think i would probably like to do this as well, but i have no logical reason to, with all classes to 80. Also on some classes i wouldnt want to do it at all, because now that they are 80, i know i dont actually like them that much.

Yeah, your idea is magnificent. Because a new alternative has been introducing to the leveling system which currently consists on walking to an NPC and paying a small fee.
And the same goes for gear, legendaries and achievement. Reset it all.
Well the bit that makes a difference to the person already at 80 is the “earning” your trait point, rather than the increase in traits per tier (since overall, the effect is staying the same, just with 1 trait point being the equivalent to 5 of the current ones). So you will still get to experience that as you still need to go out to explore and do events to get the new grandmaster tier traits.
But I agree that maybe level 80s should have the option to restart their traits under the new system if they want. But this should be entirely optional, and for those who are satisfied with their build, they should be left unchanged, as ANet are saying they will.

Silly, it would only create dozens of Queensdale Overflows because the train would massively increase in size. People actually going out and exploring and … playing the game? To level, moreso? Ridiculous.
On topic, I often make new chars / alts, so I’ll probably see this system through completely. A toggle would be nice, yes, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Chances are, the toggle will somehow break something on your character, you never know with these recent patches.
Oh I have just realised you will be able to do this if you want and Anet don’t after do anything other than what they are doing now.
Just start a new character, use scroll of knowledge (a dozen gathering dust in my stash) takes you to lvl 20.
Use 60 tomes of knowledge (everyone has 100’s of those).
Bingo you 80 with no traits unlocked, go forth into the world of Tyria and enjoy…

first, it would require a new chr slot
second it requires 60 tomes of knowledge, and no, everyone doesnt have hundreds of those at all
third it requires the birthday item.
so no it doesnt solve this. I would say they should probably include some sort of reset mechanic, where you can get something for repeating this unlock. This would make it somewhat more sustainable as a system as well.
This is a terrible idea. Traits should not be locked in any case.
Nothing is stopping you from going and finishing the content required for the traits again, even if you already have them unlocked. Defeating bosses, clearing dungeons etc will always be active.
I disagree. the way they are implementing it is fine. I don’t want to spend time unlocking everything I already had.
It defeats the purpose.
It would be just as bad if not worse than the level 30 fractal reset. Let’s not do that again.

I doubt you will even know what the requirements are they tell you how to unlock them before you do them. Also its not the same thing to do something for nothing as it is to do something for a purpose. Yes its all for nothing regardless and all that nihilist stuff, but the reality is that illusions make things more entertaining. The feeling of hunting adventure and progressing your charachter for doing it is what people are looking for in this thread. That illusion is shattered when you already have it unlocked.
to be clear i think its a bad idea to be mandatory, but i think it might be a good idea to be optional, or have reasons to repeat it (but not like 100s of times)

i think we can agree it being mandatory is bad, but what about it being optional with some limited benefits.
So long as 80s can instantly unlock everything for free (as you mentioned) I’d be cool with this. Not sure what will happen with partially complete characters like level 40s for instance that have bought 2 of their trait books but haven’t bought the 3rd one for level 60 yet.
