…and not just a fancy icon above your head.

So, i remember playing this mmo game where there was a Mentor System that high-level players could use to gain even more levels. How the system worked was you partied up with your apprentice and you do stuff together. you as a mentor gained an extra “bone” of credits for your effort teaching the world and stuff to the apprentice. How would that work in GW2?

I’m thinking now with the free 2 play model, new people come in every day i guess, and we all know when we first started, it was a huge chunk of information to process at first. I’m guessing alot of players quit the game because they really don’t know what to do in this game, the urge to quit because we at some point feel lost in the ocean of stuff to do in this game. I also know the general Gw2 community has a lot of really nice people who wants to help, but wouldt it be better to actually give “Mentoring” a benefit of doing to make more people help others?

Example, some experience would be nice, extra gold slaying monster. Heck, make a rank system where you rank up after helping others. Im also picturing a LFG section with “Mentors” where newcommers can pick out people who’ve placed themself there as mentors and ready to help. and rank up, gain more exp, gold… and stuff!

I 100% agree with you.

The only issue I see is that once you attach any kind of reward to it you will have some people who focus on earning the reward as quickly as possible instead of focus on actually mentoring and ensuring the person(s) they are running with learn anything.

What if there were a system where the person who was being mentored had a chance to rate the mentors success and that is tied to the reward, whatever it may be. The down side is some people would probably team up and swap new f2p accounts for mentoring each other to level.

Edit: Maybe there could even be subject specific mentoring like for jump puzzles, champion fights, crafting material gathering, scavenger hunts, etc…

The Mentor System is truly something, that should get improved, together with its own Mastery System.

first of, the Mentor System should get extracted from the Pact Commander Mastery.
The Mentor Mastery fro mpact Commader gets then replaced with a new one.

Mentor Mastery

I Sage
Learn to become a Mentor for other Players. You can activate over the Party Menu now your Mentor Tag or deactivate it to gain benefits from mentoring other players.

II Dungeon Grandmaster
Improves significantly for you the rewards from Dungeons, so more players you mentor by increasing your Exp, Karma and Tokens you gain from Dungeons and increasing your Magic Find per mentored.
In a Dungeon can always only be maximum 1 Mentor

III Bibliothecary
Improves significantly your Rewards and gives you some unique Tokens you can turn in for special unique rewards that you can gain only this by by mentoring other players and helping them in either ther Personal Story or Living Story Segments from the past.

IV Mist Lord
Improves your rewards when you Mentor Players of lower Fractal Levels than you, by letting you gain from Reward Chests special Fractal Tokens that you can turn into rewards that only Mentors can earn this way by helping players of lower Fractal levels or by group up with underleveled Players in WvW and doing successfully with them things there, grantign you Bonus WvW Exp and Bonus Reward Chests.

V Combat Instructor
Gain Bonus Progress on your PvP Reward Tracks so more people you mentor in PvP and play with in a group with together that are of significantly lower PvP rank than you, even if your group fails and doesn’t make wins.

VI Legendary Cartographer
Improves your Map Bonus Rewards significantly, while you mentor with other players and explloore with them Maps, do with them dynamic Events, help them to explore Maps to 100% gaining their Map Exploration reward also too.
Significantly improves especialyl in HoT rewards for helping other people with Hero points that when people in your mentored group gain HPs that they havent earned before that will let you gain a mentor unique reward token you can turn in for something very useful for you.

Together with this System will get added the *Mentor Reputation System, which will give players the option to rate their Mentors while the mentoring player has his Tag active. Based on the ratign will the Reputation Rank of the Mentor go either up or down.
Rated mentors are able to leave comments to their Ratings to prevent negastive reputation manipulation, only because you like a person not or out of whatever else childish reasons.
Reputation Rank and Ratign Comments can be seen in by players if you follow the mentor and right click on its name, then you can see in the reputation Rank of the person you follow as a Mentor, if that person has any reputation ranks as a Mentor at all as also the amount of ratings the Mentor received within the last month and how many of these ratings were either positive or negative and if the Mentor made any comments to ratings which will be saved up practicaly like the guild history system, with the difference, that a mentor has maximum only 72hours after a ratign to leave a comment on it, if that time expires, no comment can be added to the rating anymore.

The Mentor Rank System will show people, which mentor is someone, who takes the mentoring seriously and mentors really alot of other players.
Someone who mentory really alot of players and gained a very high and good reputation as a mentor in the community, such a person should receive slowly step by step from the Masteries more and more rewards extra on top, like every Mentory Rank of reputation increases the rewards by 1%.

Example:

I’m a Mentor now with Reputation Rank 10, have the Mastery completed to Tier 6 and go now into a Dungeon, where I see 4 newbies that need help, that have never done by their words that dungeon before just to describe the perfect target group for a Mentor now.
That Mentor Player activates his Tag, invites then the Newbies into his group and starts the Dungeon.

Dungeon Grandmaster in itself will increase for that Dungeon Run for the Mentor all earned Exp, Karma and Dungeon Tokens by +25% per mentored Player that accepted at the begin of the party making of being “the mentor’s disciple”

On top of this increase, I will receive +10% more exp, Karma and Token rewards due to being a mentor with Reputation Rank 10 for a total of +110% more Exp, Karma and Dungeon Tokens while playing the Dungeon from all sources inside of it.
This way a Dungeon Path Run would not net a Mentor in only 69 Dungeon Tokens, but instead it would be roughly 150 Tokens then per path what would make mentoring the dungeons directly ALOT MORE REWARDING, while not having to increase the money reward again, but just making dungens with all the stuff that affects not gold again more rewarding.
It would be for both just a pure WIN/WIN.
