So yesterday I was creating a character and spent over 2 hours trying to figure out a name. I know you can just add a last name or put an accent mark on a letter but honestly, I’ve never liked those. Most players I know do not like putting accent marks in their name and some compromise on a last name. For me it seems like it diminishes the name but that’s me. It’s malarkey that people that haven’t played this game for 1-2 years or more should keep the names they have just because they got them first. If they do not play the game why should they hold onto the names. This, I think, is especially important for when the expansion comes. New players that come in trying to find a name I think will get frustrated like myself and countless others. So that’s my suggestion.

Anet, would you please free up names for people that have not played this game for, at the least, two years or more.

Having players return only to find out they need to rename their character is a quick way to make sure they decide not to return after all.

I can’t think of too many MMOs out there that have taken that risk.

Happened sort of with Aion when they merged servers. They added a couple/Two letters to your name similar to the server name you were on previously.

But yea, not a good idea.

This game is subscription free and people can come and go as they choose. I see posts all the time from people saying they have not played for a year or more and are back. How do you think they would feel if their name was suddenly gone? They would probably be pretty angry. It may even be enough to keep them from returning.

Names are not hard to come up with. I started playing over a half a year after release and several of my characters have what I consider really good names. Many of them are even 4-5 letter names that make sense.

I’ve been seeing ALOT of these threads about names poping up lately.

I can understand wanting to get that special name for your character, but if someone else has it first, then that’s kinda the way it goes, what would be worse you not being able to get the name you want because names don’t get “freed up” or you losing a name you liked when you return from a long absence?

They should be aloud to keep the names they got first, because the names are on a first come first serve basis. You had the same opertunity at launch to pick up the game, and grab any names you wanted.

The suggestion of “freeing” up names like this would be a SUPER short term solution, it would let you get the name you want right now; maybe, someone else could still scoop it up befor you, and you would be in the same boat again).

This!

Don’t ruin names that people already have. It will just make them never play.

Anet has stated multiple times in threads such as these that they will never release Character Names nor Guild Names, due to the fact that it goes against what they are trying to do as an MMO. They feel that a player should be able to come and go as they choose, and be able to pick right back up where they left off.

I could see them releasing names from banned accounts since by definition those players can’t come back. But for accounts in good standing? Thomdane states it well.

We do not take character or display or guild names away from valid accounts. Someone may step away and return to the game later, so the names must stay in place.

You did the right thing in sending a polite request, and hopefully that player will respond and the two of you will make arrangements. (Support cannot switch names, even with mutual permission, but you can do this privately.)

If anything, they can simply remove uniqueness from character names. It’s not actually necessary for anything since the account name is already unique.

But taking reserved names away from players is a can of worms waiting to be opened. Especially since name reservation was a pre-purchase incentive for the original release.

As an aside: be more original in the first place and you won’t have this problem.

Create a name – a truly unique name – and use that everywhere. I can pretty much join any game that’s been out for years with no worries of having any of my names taken, and if they are, then I have alternatives that I can use.

Here’s how I got my main:

>Creates Necromancer in gw1
>"Lana" has been stuck in my head
>Necros are pretty dark
>Tries “Lana Darkness”
>Was taken
>Thinks about how if some profession is female, it just adds “ess” to it
>Takes the “n” out of Darkness
>Has a name that I now use across 4 MMOs with no worries of anyone stealing

So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”

One of the reasons stated for not releasing terminated account’s character names is that it is considered part of the consequences of unacceptable practices.

If such character names were released, the terminated account holder could just acquire another account, and use those desired names, again.

Oh right, I remember that now. I suppose it depends on how much we care if a bad person manages to make a name anew (after all, they’d be keeping themselves readily identifiable in game). Then again … yah. A new player might be very sad if they picked a name that had previously been that of an exploiter or harasser and found themselves getting hate whispers or getting insta-blocked by everyone for no reason they know.

(Though note in Gaile’s comment she says they won’t release names from “valid accounts.”)

Ah, well, I wasn’t referring to the quoted passage, but a different statement. I’m just too lazy today to search through all the old Account Issues broken links.

Regardless, releasing names of any kind is unlikely to happen, save for that one time about 4 months after release (GW1 reserved names).

If anything, they can simply remove uniqueness from character names. It’s not actually necessary for anything since the account name is already unique.

It’s required and necessary because of the sheer number of characters a single account is able to possess, not to mention the permanence of race and class. For player purposes, an account name is simply a catchall tag for mail, whispers, parties, and guilds. IE forms of communication. At least GW2 lets you use the catchall or a different character name attached to it to interact with other players. I’ve been on some games that require you to type the EXACT name in. That gets annoying as kitten when some kitten’s got a name like “wwwwwwwwwwwwwwvvvvvvvvvvvvwwwwwwwwwwwwvwvwvwvwvwvwwwwwwllllllllloooooololololllllllwwwwwwwwwvvvvvvvvvvvwvwvwvwvwwwwwwwvwvvvvvvvvvwwwwwwwwwwww” or some crap like that.

LOL that last comment I totally know the feeling. (played champions online a whisper /whisper hero_name_that_is_to_long@acct_handlealso2long….) It wasn’t fun a lot of the time. I like it the way A-net has it set up, we can use either option.

I prefer to type the character name in usually, but can you imagine if you had to type the character name AND the Miku.6297? Mines not to bad because it’s short and none of my characters have the accented letters in their names, but imagine whispering cÞßÝÉÿç@something.#### and having to type that in:/

No, it’s not “malarkey” in the least.

I understand you want to use a name that seems to be ‘retired’ (as do I! — there are two dozen I wanted to use during Head Start…and they were all taken by the time I was able to login).

However, you are implying that somehow those who started playing today have a greater “right” to names than the someone who might have pre-purchased the game in May 2012 and played 40 hrs/week starting in Aug 2012 and only stopped a year ago due to RL. That same person might plan to start playing again when HoT comes out.

tl;dr no one has a “right” to any specific name; to the extent that anyone has the remotest claim, then, unfortunately, that has to go to the person who has a character with that name, regardless of why they aren’t playing today.
