[Suggestion] Option to hide AP
What would be the use of this option?
What would be the use of this option?
Well, it doesn’t seem like it would be terribly expensive to implement. I could be wrong, but I ‘think’ the only place it really shows up is in the friends and followers lists? A check box where it might make intuitive sense, like around where ‘show player names’ is. If it’s checked, just hide the values there.
Nothing sinister. It’s a bit like people that wanted (or maybe ‘needed’ is a better word) to have the field of view changed because it would actually make them dizzy to play (in my case, I prefer the old version, so I still use -useOldFoV), only for other reasons.
I think for those that understand why I asked for it, it might make for healthier game play. For people that don’t really understand it, I would just hope that you respect that it would make for healthier game play for some of us, and not impact anyone else’s play style choices.
If I understand what you’re suggesting, you want an option to prevent yourself from other player’s AP, right? But other players will still be able to see yours, unless they also hide it?
I’m not sure what problem this is solving, exactly. People who really care about other players’ AP won’t hide it. What’s the point in hiding it from people who don’t care about it anyway?
(If it’s the other way around, preventing other players from seeing your AP, that’s a different can of worms. I don’t think that would solve anything, either, because it won’t change the personality type-clash involved.)
The real question is: why is this displayed in the first place?
It is a rather inappropriate display for a friends list.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
I disagree. There isn’t a better place to display it, and I think it’s fine for a friend’s list. People who want to compete with their friends over AP can, and it can sometimes serve a useful purpose in gauging other players.
I don’t mean “10,000 AP or scram” mentalities, either. If I meet someone and see they have as much AP or more than I do, then I can roughly gauge them as an experienced player. If they’re a very low number, however, I can figure that they’re either new, or they’re a casual player. If that’s the case, I’m more inclined to hold their hand and walk them through things.
AP isn’t the problem. People can be a problem. If hardcore players want to play with similar players, that’s fine, so long as no one is nasty about it.
It’s no better or different than the ability to inspect characters, yet that was not put into this game, highly likely by design.
I don’t see the need to sniff butts in a video game.

Ok, so now I am confused.
The OP quotes Draugl, asking what the suggestion be used for.
- Notebene then proceeds to tell us how inexpensive it would be to implement.
- Then where it shows up
- Then how to turn it off
- Then an example of how the PoV makes people dizzy
- Then expressing that people who understand what the suggestion is for, it might make for healthier game play.
- Then for those who don’t understand, they are to take the OP’s word for it.
I am sorry but at no point was Draugl’s question answered. So far the question seems to have been skirted, obfuscated, misdirected and subsequently ignored.
This reads like a non sequitur which tends to put my head in a spin.
So might I ask, why do you not want to see my AP’s yet allow me to see yours? Because that is what an optional check box would do. Could you please tell us what benefit this would bring to the game by you turning off another’s APs?
I’d rather they spent their time more constructively on stuff that actually matters… OP’s suggestion is like, less than 1% of the player base would use or care about.
Sorry
I’d suggest taking it a step further and hiding AP from other players altogether. I am almost to my 15k chest and I don’t think AP should show at all because of what it does to lfg dungeon teams. I don’t use the lfg tool though so my opinion may carry less weight.

If I had to guess the op feels anxiety if someone has more ap which may lead to more addictive gameplay. Maybe ocd or something similar?
Well, this is a peculiar request. And you’ve yet to answer Draugl’s question: what is it for? (ie., what’s the point of this suggestion?)
You can’t just say “respect that it would make for healthier gameplay” and expect people to follow you blindly. Respect is earned, and you don’t earn it by not saying what we should be respecting. That just doesn’t make sense.
While I get the point of making your AP private to other people (though it’s kinda not needed imo), I don’t get what hiding others’ AP from your view does. If it’s to stop you from judging others based on their AP, then I gotta say this is probably the wrong way to go about things…

Agreed.

I am fairly confident that he meant to hide his AP from other people as well as hiding their AP. Basically he doesn’t want to see AP values or have anyone see his.
This is my assumption based on his initial post. It wouldn’t make a lick of sense otherwise.
Some people can be elitist and gauge skill based on AP. I have been guilty of this on occasion for higher level fractals. I mean, when 4 out of 5 of us are 13k+ AP and our PUG 5th member is at 1500, it certainly raises eyebrows. I can tell you I’ve never kicked someone because of their AP, we always play with them to see how they do. In this particular case the PUG 5th member was a good player. We had no issues at all running a FoTM30 with him in our group.
Works both ways too. If our PUG 5th member who joined had 15k AP, we’d all be relieved and expected them to be really good. But I’ve personally seen that not be the case as well.
All AP really tells us is generally how long someone has been playing. 10k+ means they’ve most likely been playing since the beginning or close to it. 3k or less and they are likely new players, within a year at least. Both can be good or bad players, AP means nothing really.
I would support hiding AP.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
@ Draknar. AP can’t even tell if you are playing since release or not. For example I play this game since the 3 day headstart and last week I got the 6k AP Chest.
Well I support the AP hiding because of the insanity I see every day in the LFG.
20k AP for Arah
8k AP for CoF P1 oO
AP are no indicator for Skill, but unfortunately most players don’t understand this

The numbers you gave are indeed ridiculous, but AP IS some sort of playerskill indicator. If I try something difficult I’ll request at least 3k AP, most of my friends and guildies require 5k+. Thing is: many people work and can’t spare all their time failing content, although I do guide PUGs whenever needed there’s always a limit to this.
You know… time.
I kinda wish AP would ONLY show for mutual friends. To many idiot players use AP to gauge a players skill. And with players out there with 20k+ AP, the baseline that players require is going up.
used to be 3k AP was ‘ok’, now its 6k ap they are looking for. I have seen players kick other players from Dungeon Parties cause they had 4,000 AP.
I feel Anet really needs to address this issue, as time goes on this is only going to get worse.

But if AP is hidden, then no one will be able to judge and mock you for being a noob!
What are we going to do then!?
It’s the chain I beat you with until you

AP reflects a players experience. Not their skill level. You can grind out the daily/monthly and the 2 week LS updates, and earn easy AP. That doesn’t mean the player is any good in a party situation.
AP used as a skill baseline is extremely miss leading.

Well, that’s what we got for now. I repeat: I do guide PUGs, but there’s a limit to this (I have to wake up 6am, for example).
