With the expansion approaching I’ve been previewing skins for my new character.

For items that can’t be found on the trading post I’ve been copying and pasting item link codes e.g. [&AgGqtgAA], saying it and clicking to preview the skin in question.

I got my chat commands blocked after the 6th or 7th skin! I had to abandon my previewing.

I may be a complete idiot – is there a better method than this?

If not I put forward a suggestion; allow chat link codes to be pasted directly into the preview window so that we don’t have an issue with having our chat suppressed (for spamming reasons).

I just change chat channels, but then, I don’t spam that many at a time.

change chats, like \whisper to a friend, use \g and so on
Besides that there is nothing much you can do.

You can just whisper them to yourself. That’s what I do

I just find a mostly empty area and paste it there, in /say chat. Or go to my home instance.

Whisper to yourself. I don’t believe there’s any spam filter on whispers (at least I’ve never hit one), and that way you don’t bother anyone else either.

That’s what I do for the previews of codes. I whisper to my alt with the easiest name to type. No one gets spammed but me (though I do get a double of each whisper, thanks to seeing Sent and Received).
