Since you have recently announced the Xpac and shown us those huge maps, could you please merge a few of the core maps?? It seems so pointless to have some of these maps separated. for example, strais of devastation, malchor’s leap, and cursed shore can all be easily merged into one long map. it improves player experience, especially since the maps are so small.

I’m going to go out on a limb and posit that this would be a venture that would not only be time-consuming, unneccessary and costly, but would also invalidate content that is specific to each map, so it’s unlikely to ever see implementation. Just my 2 coppers.

I knew someone would say something like this. Fortunately, you’re wrong. It’s a quality of life and it’s as costly or a lot less than any quality of life they have previously done. No revamps are needed, no special coding, nothing really. Just take away a few waypoints and merge the map server, very simple, fast, cheap work. I understand that you’re the average joe that constantly pops up the time consuming money consuming line on every topic, but lol it’s not, and at the end of the day money and time are needed for many things, very necessary things.

Have you worked with ANet’s code in the past? Because that’s the only way you can claim that you know how long something will take or how easy it is.

To me, it doesn’t seem all that easy or quick to do.

1. Each map can only hold so many people. Merging the maps means what population can be on the map is spread out thinner. This could prove problematic for group events. But you can’t increase it to avoid too many people in one area during the major group events like the temples.

2. Creating the areas between the portals between maps. And creating other areas because they realistically wouldn’t only be accessible from just the spots we currently access them from.

3. Reworking the dailies as there are reduced options for Event Dailies.

And there are probably things that I’m missing.

How does this suggestion improve player experience? The only thing I can see would be fewer zone portals, but frankly those are only something I experience when exploring for that character’s first time.

I can see where it would not be an improvement, though.

  • Maps that take three times as long to explore.
  • Fewer maps would mean less map completion rewards.
  • Way Point removal could be problematic unless the only ones removed would be those perpetually contested anyway. Added time to get where one is going for little to no benefit may not be a huge deal, but it matters more to me than bigger zones.
  • Absent a rise in map cap, it might mean fewer people spread out across more area.

So how does this work with population?

Does the new map have a cap three times each of the individual maps? If so, how will this affect scaling on events if everyone zergs to one temple? So the events may need to be reworked to cater for the increased population?

Or is the cap left where it is? Now the players are spread thinner, so the events might need reworking to cater for fewer players.

Or somewhere in between, but still all those events will need to make sure they’re appropriate for the population levels present.

What about map rewards? There’ll be two fewer maps in rotation for those so how do they get reworked? And bear in mind this is something that has an impact beyond just the Orr maps.

What about map completion – the rewards would need reworking to reflect three times the effort to complete the map?

I doubt it’s an easy thing to do, certainly not as simple as just merging the servers. I’ve just come up with three area that would need rework off the top of my head, and I’m sure there are plenty more things that would need doing that you and I have no concept of because we’ve simply never seen the code behind all this.

Which begs the question, what benefit would we really get from doing this? Save a loading screen if you were to go directly from one map to another. That doesn’t seem worth the effort to me.

okay you guys are so full of questions, and this to me is confusing. I dont understand how something can twist everyone upside down. Its simple, rework the timing of the events so they execute on a timely manner, from right to left. Those are the veryyyyyy easy part, and no I dont need to work in Anet to figure out how complicated something is. Anet has Competent developers and im sure techniques are worldwide with obvious different small details. Now the more complicated thing would be a rework on the far left map, which imo needs a difficulty boost with a new map boss. Look im not here to enlighten you, sorry….it can be done and imo it should. It will boost core game gameplay, and give free players more incentive to buy when they see how impressive Anet can make gameplay experience….plus many other factors that I wont explain.

How about you actually answer our questions instead of hand waving them away because you know if you stopped to actually answer them, they would suggest that it would be more work than ANet would get benefit from.

And none of us said it couldn’t be done. Just that the logistics of doing it aren’t as simple as you seem to think it is. And the chances of the pros outweighing the cons are low.

How? The things to do will be the same. No event crosses into another map, and making events that would would not be trivial.

, and give free players more incentive to buy when they see how impressive Anet can make gameplay experience

How is a bigger map impressive? No player is going to experience it during play except when they open their map. Seeing a bigger map is not impressive.

….plus many other factors that I wont explain.

In other words, you’ve got nothing.

That’s a big claim .. and other people have already addressed why.

I understand that you’re the average joe that constantly pops up the time consuming money consuming line on every topic,

And that’s where YOU are very very wrong. I’m not that average joe. I’m the average joe who makes jokes on various threads that people face-palm to. I went out of my way this time to give you a serious pro bono heads-up of the kinds of issues you’re going to face with your suggestion, which you replied to in a smarmy way. That’s fine. I don’t mind. But just quickly before I get bored and start making face-palming jokes again, I’ll give you a little more serious advice.

Anet has no good reason to merge these maps as you suggest. They work well as they are, and merging them will objectively consume time, effort and money that could be spent elsewhere. That’s not going to be popular, so it requires some extraordinary reason to do it.
So far, you’ve made some sensationalist claims about how easy it would be – and backing up those claims is a challenge in itself – but even if they were true, it will still divert some effort, money and time from elsewhere. You’re going to have to work hard to sell that, and so far you’re not selling it well.

Lastly, have you considered map completion? Right now, completing the three maps gives you three chests. Merge them together and you have three times the work for one chest. That’s another thing you have to sell.

You are asking ArenaNet to put a lot of time, resources, and energy into going backward and that is something they very rarely do. I am not trying to dismiss your idea of larger core Tyria maps. I just don’t think given ArenaNet’s history that it will ever happen.

I smash “1” for greatness… (òÓ,)

Why do you think maps even exist, why isn’t the whole of Tyria just one massive map?
