ANet likes making headgear, shoulder armor, gloves, and boots because they have lower clipping probabilities than torso and leg armor pieces. My complaint is that they give us too much oversized and over-crazy gear. Believe it or not, ANet, not every armor piece needs to be gigantic with huge spikes sticking out all over the place for people to like them. This post is a request for simple armor pieces.

Most of these suggestions would be far easier to implement than current Gem Store offerings. As such, I would expect to see a lot of them, and at reasonable prices.

HEAD

No headgear should ever remove the character’s hair!

  • A simple eyes-only mask would go over well. Like Robin Hood is often pictured. Or Robin from the 1960’s “Batman” TV show. Very simple. Not a fancy-schmancy Marie Antionette French party mask.
  • Harem-style veils could be cool. Something very much like the current medium weight Ranger masks, except translucent.
  • Circlets are nice, but probably hard to make without removing the hair if designed to be visible all the way around the head (like the Laurels). I suggest making a selection primarily for the forehead, that disappear into the hair over the ears (like the many pairs of glasses we have). From simple leather bands, to fancy tiaras.
  • Earrings are long overdue. Danglers, hoops, studs, cuffs, you name it.

SHOULDERS (Neck)

  • The Winter Scarf would have sold much better if it were of reasonable size. The massive thing they released caused all sorts of hairstyle clipping, and buries some characters up to their nose. (The fourth Doctor Who had a 12-foot long scarf that left more of his face revealed!) We need more scarves. Smaller sized. More (dyable) patterns.
  • Necklaces! Where are necklaces and chokers and neckerchiefs? (Charr and barbarian-types need a studded leather dog collar!) Dog tags! Primitive necklaces of beads and claws! Even if many went hidden underneath armor, I think people would still buy them just so they don’t have to hide their shoulder armor all the time.

ANet’s track record on shoulders is abysmal – giant ones that cover everything from ears to elbow and float in midair are commonplace. This has got to stop.

GLOVES

  • Gloves keep getting overblown. All we see are bulky, full gauntlets going from fingertip to elbow. My thief can’t rob anyone while wearing Astronaut gloves. Give us small, simple metal and leather bracers covering just the forearm without all the spikes and protrusions.
  • Bracelets! As with necklaces, bracelets and simple armbands are long overdue. One wrist or two. One bracelet or many. Handwraps like the GW1 Monks. These are a great solution for people who want to go gloveless, but don’t want to have to hide their hand armor all the time.

BOOTS

  • Okay, I’m not really calling for boots here. We’re talking minimalist. No giant whomping-through-a-snowbank army boots. That means shoes. The men and ladies need some simple below-the-ankle offerings that don’t make them look like they have size twenty feet.
  • Sandals. Simple flip-flops. Lace up the legs. Simple. Easy. Wanted.
  • Leg bracers. Like the wrist bracers; a simple metal or leather shin guard that covers the shin only … not the foot or the knee. It can wrap clear around, or be open in back held on with straps or laced strings.

Long have the people called for a “Hide” checkbox on footwear. I think some of these offerings would alleviate much of that need.

Check out the head, shoulder (neck), arm, and footwear collages below for ideas and examples!

Interesting, Granted in a fantasy MMO people want the crazy enormous looks. I’ll keep my eye on this, curious on how the rest of the community responds.

Actually, there’s harem-veil thingies ingame.
It’s just that players can’t use them.
There’s like, more than 20 armor sets that NPCs uses but Arenanet won’t let players use for unknown reasons. It’s very frustrating.

You forgot…

Pants!

True, the Light armors could certainly do with some pants. No skirts, no butt-capes, and no flaps. Heavy Metal armors as well. There are a TON of Medium pants available, but most go unseen due to the very many full coats which cover them. The trenchcoat issue has been discussed since day one, and little has been done about it.

I’m looking at headgear, shoulders/neck, gloves, and feet in this thread though. ANet is slow to release full armor sets, but seems to have little difficulty releasing these pieces. I assume it is for ease of cross-race, cross-gender styling and the low chance of clipping issues on the extremities. Fewer spikes would also cut down on clipping.

How hard can it be for them to make a plain mask? Or wristband? Or choker? They could whip those out in a heartbeat as a trial run. And as pointed out, there are some veils in-game already; they just need to be ported over to the players.

I think ANet has a huge untapped audience for normal-sized/simple armor and weapons. It would be easy enough to test, and could be a huge cash cow with regard to the relatively little amount of time and effort required.

I think the hardest issues to resolve with clipping is what to do with hair, and Charr body models.
Hats and masks that remove hair is an annoying solution to a issue that they have had since the original Guild Wars.
“Make a basic hair model to accommodate the hat, or design all hairstyles to have a version that does not clip with the hat.”

Charr have the complication of being a really great in design, but are both bipedal and quadrupedal digitigrades, having an extra moving appendage and horns.
Designing (or re-designing) armor for Charr I imagine is a nightmare.

These are all legitimate design issues that an artists and devs would have to work together on. We would really like to see this game be the best at what it does.
The sideflappies on my Pirate Hat are really annoying and I would like to see the roguish coif peek from underneath. I know why they are there and that makes both the gamer and artist side of me sad too.

I’m thinkin’ that is why ANet mostly releases Gloves/Shoulders/Footwear pieces. Easiest things to make. Minimal changes based on race. Less chance of clipping. Heads are indeed harder, and they “solve” their difficulties with weird flaps or total head coverage.

I am hoping that my suggestion gets implemented because A] ANet already finds these to be the easiest/fastest/safest armor parts to make, and B] I am specifically asking for simple styles.

Um…. All of those things are in-game skins, easily acquired from the basic armor sets.

Admittedly not available for every weight class.
I suggest time spent in the wardrobe, rather than looking to the gemstore.

Guild Wars sort of lost its minimalistic style when it transitioned to Guild Wars 2. Not sure what happened. Sometimes simpler is better, though variation is always the key so having some over the top, whacky armors are fine too as long as its balanced. Oh and customizable jewelry would be awesome! A lot of light armors in the first game had things like earrings, necklaces, chokers and such to complement the look and I wish Anet would do the same with armors in this game, or at the very least make jewelry visible on our characters

While yes, medium armor has pants

80% of these so called pants are basically tights

I’d love to see some pants that hide the thighs of male sylvari, something with several layers (that’s not cultural)

I love the glorious chestpiece, but sylvari have these thunder thighs which i can’t not notice ( http://puu.sh/fJQP7/3e385ad47a.jpg best example i have on short notice) I’d love to hide these huge legs, but the pants I’ve tried end up actually pointing them out more than hiding it
I resorted to using a coat again

much snippage because…

…signed.

I don’t really like flashy looks so I’d go for a nice simple armour piece easily. I might work a bit of spike or oversize into a look but overall I like simple. Doesn’t even have to be elegant (though that would help).

Count me as one of those who prefers a more streamlined, simple look to crazy big armor. My biggest annoyance is how bulky some of the pieces look. I mean, fine, make the gloves have big spikes and fire, but do they have to be about 3 inches thick? There is a pair of pants I like except for the fact that there is a ridge at my waist because the skin is so thick. My jeans don’t stand that far away from my body. Heck, my snowpants don’t either.

Also helms. Add just a bit of hair to the actual model so it looks like we’ve tucked it up. I don’t even care if it matches my actual hair color, just add it on already.

I really wish ANet would just release a simple, kind of realistic heavy armor set, kind of like what I linked. You know, something that looks knightly but not over the top. No buttcapes, loincloths, or huge shoulders.

Also, the linked image is from a Korean MMO…of a female character. Surprising, right?

I can also say I’ve wanted more styles like that in the game instead of over the top armour models that try exquisitely hard to seem epic.

Stronlgy support this! Many things have a tendency to be oversized. Charr feet also look wiered with shoes…
