Suggestion: Server Chat
I can see this being a good idea if that server chat was only visible to players in the same megaserver instance as those who type in that chat. For a chat that is visible by the entire server… that’s just a chat nightmare waiting to happen. It would have to be permanently assigned to it’s own chat tab separate from the regular map chat. Surely you’ve seen how hectic map chat can get. Can you imagine an entire server trying to have ten different conversations at the same time in one chat tab?
Before you say “People could just stay off it or turn it off”, but then what would be the point of having it at all? Also, before you say “People wouldn’t abuse it like that.”, all it takes is for ONE player to say one deliberate thing to cause some instigation (like current events, for example) and BOOM, the chat will explode with a thousand replies, because people are so easily offended by anything and everything.
Even if it was made so that a player can only post a message in that chat once every ten minutes, that one troll comment is all it would take to get the thousand replies. People are too easy and too reactive for this chat feature to really be useful. It’s a good idea in theory, but looking at it realistically, it isn’t.
I agree with the concerns, but a “map wide” server chat, that is all the people from your server on the current map, rather than the instance.
So if I was in Rata Sum I would see map chat, which would be everyone in my current instance. And I would see server chat, which would be all the people from my server who are currently in Rata Sum, regardless of instance.
That would be pretty cool I think. (But very likely to have issues being implemented, and may effectively be impossible with how shards work.)
I kinda miss the days before megaserver for a number of reasons. Actually recognizing names in map chat, and guild tags on my screen for one thing. Pretty sure the last time I saw a name in map chat that wasn’t completely random and new to me was before megaserver. Now its like I never even see the same people twice.
I like the idea.
but at the other hand, the map chat is also a nice thing. you get to “talk” with all different people wile waiting on events.
