It has plagued us since GW2’s release, I am talking about those random disconnects you get near the end of Tequatl, or as you suddenly find that enemy zerg in WvW, or as Peneloopee intimidates you with “Coo!”. As I am sure many others like myself are becoming rather irritated by these disconnects, I would like to propose an option or two on how Anet could resolve the issue.

Solution #1: The most common that many have suggested here on the forums; allow a 1-minute grace period for players that disconnect. Effectively, this will reserve the disconnected players’ spot on the map for one minute after their moment of disconnect. After that duration is up, the spot is then open to anyone else trying to get into the map.

This solution would be very effective, as these random disconnects are usually a sudden kick from the server which you can immediately log back in to within a short space of time. Therefore, if a 1-minute grace period was in place, the player will experience the sudden horror of a disconnect, but then quickly reboot the game and log back in and safely enter back onto the same map, feeling pleased.

Solution #2: Now this one is far more complex to implement, but the main mechanics are already in place. What I propose is a queue system nearly identical to what we currently have for WvW borderlands, but for regular maps.

So taking an alternative look from solution #1, here the player would disconnect and log back in as fast as they could. Upon logging in, they would then click the ‘Join in X’ from a party member’s portrait, and if the map is full they would be put into a queue for that map.

I am terrible with words, so I have attached two graphics which explains this the best I could visually (of course, no bonus points for pointing out my terrible image editing skills).

The first graphic details the current issue I am raising, and the second is the solution #2 I am giving here.

Thank you all for reading, and hopefully we won’t have to experience the frustration of the random disconnects ever again!

Tl;dr – Take a look at the graphics.

I dont think the que thing would work to well and we dont know the server structure or program enough to know if a grace period is easy to implement or not. ( ofcourse i would like it aswell those crashes at teq and tt arent fun)

Three years people have been asking for a solution to this problem. I think it’s safe to say nothing is going to be done.

True, but my optimism got the best of me.

Well, the queue system would at least be less clunky than the current option of having to spam and hope someone else in the full map disconnects. A rather cruel circle. If it were a queue, at least you would know how close you are to getting into the map and you would need not spam the ‘Join in’ button any more, which has killed many a mouse.

DC protection for one minute would be great. Other games have this and it seems to work just fine.

Maybe make the grace-period 3 – 5 minutes. Sometimes my client crashes and relaunching the game takes longer than 1 minute.

I am just now getting this DC problem as of a few days ago, absolutely no idea what’s going on but can only play 5-45 minutes first play, then if I try to log back 1-3 mins it kicks me out, and trading post is almost always unavailable to me… any idea what causes this in the first place?

any idea what causes this in the first place?

I have heard many players DC’ing since the latest patch. Otherwise, I’ve personally found that DC’s are most likely to occur at large events where lots of skills and calculations are taking place which might be somehow cutting your connection when it can’t calculate fast enough.

Similarly, when running Teamspeak with Guild Wars 2, I found that both programs will disconnect at the same time as each other (even if I still have an internet connection to everything else, such as these forums), so it is possible Teamspeak could be irritating the connection, although I doubt it.

Although I don’t know this as fact, I probably sound like an idiot from the point of view of someone who is experienced with connection issues.

I like the idea of a grace period, whether that be one minute, two minutes, or whatever. I remember GW1 eventually implemented a reconnect feature at some point in the game’s life. That was a good thing since the content was instanced, and a DC originally meant losing any progress in that instance and returning you to your last outpost. Now with GW2 and megaserver, it seems like a DC nearly always means you get put back into a different map and miss out on whatever you had been doing. Even being in a party isn’t a guarantee you’ll get back into the same map.

ever since their “mega server” roll out we have been getting this issue and its getting worse and worse and worse like we forewarned them when it was first rolled out. They didn’t listen then, and now the game is getting unplayable which in turn will sadly kill the game. they need to give us back our ability to change instance, not have us all mashed together in one big mega server because it if very very clearly unstable.

1) I like the grace period idea but I see two issues:

  • It depends on how far the game kicks me out, as to how long it takes me to get back in. Best case, it bumps me back to the character select screen, getting back in from there in a minute is feasible. If it shuts down the game and I have to fully log in, then there is little chance making it back in one minute. Then of course there is my last two disconnects which forced a reboot, no chance getting back in a minute in that case.
  • When you do come back in and the map is full, what que do you want the game to put you into?
If you are at a big boss event, there is a likelyhood that the map will be full. Now if you go into a que for the map that you just left, chances are that when you get back in it will be because the boss is dead and everyone is leaving. I have had this happen with Claw and Teq and there is no chests cause you are not there upon death. Now I guess the game might give you credit for the kill even though you were not there to issue the final blow but then how long does it grant you that? For a certain amount of time after death, or for a certain amount of time after the chest goes away, or for a certain amount of time after the people leave and you get back into the map.
The other option would be to put you back on an active boss map instead, that way at least you have a chance to kill the boss. However it could put you on an active map that has no chance in completing.

Sometimes even the seemingly simple solutions are unfortunately not so simple.

how about instead of fishing for patchwork fixes, they just fix the core problem? Hundreds, if not more, reports and logs have been submitted on this. Many of them have matching errors and information. Surely with all that information something can be done to fix this problem after 3 years???

yeah really one would think after that long it would have been done by now !!! at best we can only hope it will happen

The map being full is one of the problems this is supposed to solve. As long as you’re on the grace-period your spot on the map is not given to anyone else, so you can relog into the same ip even though the map is full for other players.

Well, in the pre-Megaserver era there was a queue when you were put in a overflow map. I was automatic and you hadn’t to trigger it. But well, they removed that for Megaserver’s sake >.> Maybe having the best of each system could work (Megaserver + queue).
