I read in another thread no one offering ideas for making money so this thread is intended to offer an idea where the company and player meet halfway: optional subscription plans. They can be divided into gold, platinum, and diamond. A player with no subscription can use the trading post three times per day.

A gold membership could be $10 per month with these benefits:

-You’re given a certain amount of gold per day for logging in (not a fixed amount of gold but scales with gem/gold conversion prices to ensure an amount that will always maintain some value even in the face of inflation)

-Ranked PvP privileges

-Daily scratch for winning exclusive skins

-Can use tradeing post 10 times per day.

-Reduced waypoint and vendor cost by 25%

-Access to WvW for 15 times per month. To avoid abuse you’d get kicked from WvW after three hours to ensure each time you log in doesn’t count as just WvW’ing just once.

A platinum membership has all of the above but is $15 per month and even more gold per day.

-May WvW 25 times per month.

The diamond membership would be $25 per month and:

-In addition to the normal scratch will have an exclusive diamond scratch where you have better odds of winning rare stuff and diamond scratch only skins.

-Access to a farming area with unlimited respawns. For example in a Wintersday room could be an unlimited spawning supply of gingerbread men who drop presents. But the catch is such a room is only open for two hours per day.

-Unlimited tradepost postings.

-Reduced waypoint and vendor cost by 50%.

-Unlimited raiding runs.

-May enter WvW anytime they want.

No. Just no. 100% no. Kitten like this would ruin the game for many, and benefit the few.

Also, I have to address this insane suggestion…

Gold membership:
-Access to WvW for 15 times per month. To avoid abuse you’d get kicked from WvW after three hours to ensure each time you log in doesn’t count as just WvW’ing just once.

Platinum membership:
-May WvW 25 times per month.

Diamond membership:
-May enter WvW anytime they want.

What kind of drugs are you taking that would compel you to suggest placing limited access to a huge part of the game that is already free to begin with?! Why stop there?! We should do the same for dungeons, fractals, way-pointing, and even logging-in!

Heh. That’s pretty funny.

Wait. You are joking, right? This is a joke? Just a jape? Having a laugh?

I’m kind of sitting on the fence with regards to GW2 right now, and this suggestion would be, to me, a very firm push off of the GW2 side. First they take away guild features and lock them behind HoT and guildhalls, and now you suggest they take away even more features and lock them behind a subscription?

Seriously, I hope you’re joking. That’s an incredibly, breathtakingly bad idea. Maybe you could dream up some more shiny new features to stick behind this paywall, but walling off existing features is never, ever, ever a good thing. See that bolded text? That means my assertion is extra truthy.

I mean, maybe you just want to kill off WvW and ranked PvP (and maybe raids too), and even though I have no love for those things either, I have no problem with letting people enjoy them if they want. You should find healthier outlets for your feelings.

…But I’m not done yet. Help me, Billy Mays, as I come at you with one last gripe: TP restrictions? Really? What does it mean that a gold user can “use the TP” ten times a day? Does that mean 10 transactions a day? And what about non-subscribers? I have to ask…are you actually aware of the amount of junk loot a person can accumulate in a few hours of playing GW2? Furthermore, what if people just want to buy and sell stuff? We’re just going to restrict their usage of the TP because…¯\(?)/¯.

I’m just going to end this post here, assume you’re joking, and get on with my life, because frankly, it’s hurting my brain to think about this.

We must understand that Anet is a business and to stay alive needs to make money. How does it do that? Provide services a player wants. For example the diamond subscription: you have a chance to a win for example a chrome school uniform. So many players will say, “I so want this!” and will take their chances with daily diamond scratches.

Dungeons and fractals would have five attempts per week on a free mode (they’d be counted separately so five dungeons and five fractals not three dungeons, two fractals, and you’re done for the week)

“I mean, maybe you just want to kill off WvW and ranked PvP "

No, they are in a serious state of neglect and imbalance respectively. PvP in particular needs drastic rebalancing, new map types (not just point holding and preferably new maps without NPCs something like Voidstar would be fun) and other changes that consider the power creep and all the big new AoE abilities. A subscription would help keep out players who don’t take the mode seriously enough to invest in it. Maybe it’d be better keeping ranked arenas for HoT buyers only with no subscription needed?

You forgot legendary membership. ( 30 dollars a month)

-Instant legendary rank on SPvP, with no point/tier lose.
- All dyes unlocked.
- All cosmetic unlocked.
-Announcement serverwide when you log in.
- Instant level 80 characters and full map unlock.
- Your achivement point scale with your level. So 10 points achivement now give you 800 points at level 80.
- Mastery level now gives you 2^masterylevel gold.
- You can get triple loot with %75 chance to drop ascended gear, from all world bosses.
- Instant 201 AR.
- Exclusive sigils and runesets totally customizable numbers.

I think this is good and fair. So we can grind in real life and relax in GW2.

Don’t give me +1 for my flawless idea please. I know you all want this.

Your suggestion is pay to win. I despise pay to win with every bone in my body. So good luck finding something that would benefit me.

It isn’t pay to win per se, only pay for extras. Okay, maybe in hindsight walling off existing features behind a paywall is a bad idea, it just sounded safe at the time. I have seen games where people can spend hundreds of dollars upgrading weapons and armor through a luck based crafting system, sometimes even risk losing the weapons. I do not advocate that but the chance to win exclusive skins. If no win then random T2-6 mats as a consolation prize or some wins resulting in ascended mats (big wins are the skins, and they would be tradeable so free players can obtain them too with regular play farming.)

“-Instant legendary rank on SPvP, with no point/tier lose.”

Defeats the purpose of ranks. If anything all leagues need pip and tier loss. PvP needs a radical restructuring while still keeping the pip system, just divorce MMR from league progression until 90th percentile players have a 90% win rate until mid-high ruby where it evens out since they’ll be playing equals frequently at that tier instead of so much abuse screwing with matchmaking.

“- All dyes unlocked.”

Problem here is by reintroducing dye packs in the gem store resulted in a huge crash. All the rare exclusive dyes are easily over $100 in real life money when factored in together. Months ago electro blue was over 1,000g.

“- All cosmetic unlocked.”

Some prestige is needed. For example legendary and glorious armors won’t be obtainable with scratches.

“- Instant level 80 characters and full map unlock.”

Instant 80 why not? Full map unlock however still needs work.

“- Your achievement point scale with your level. So 10 points achievement now give you 800 points at level 80.”

But that will just cause AP inflation.

Yes, it’s a business, we get that. Hence, we have the option of supporting the game via gemstore purchases if we so choose for bonus material. What you’re suggesting is still pay-to-win, and prohibits access to the core game for a paywall fee. This is still and always will be a terrible idea. Sorry, but this is never going to happen, so I suggest you stop before you embarrass yourself any further.

To the op, I am usually a pretty fair fellow with my criticism, but all those ideas are bad. A better idea (if they really need a sub) would be just a flat membership fee and have them work on ALL areas of the game equally.

It is still pay to win. Pay to win = getting ahead by means unobtainable by players who do not pay.

Exclusive skins are not exclusive if they’re sellable so it’s one or the other. And they’d be ungodly expensive on the trading post so that’s still pay to win as they would be obscene to farm gold for (meaning it would be an item you’d have to buy gems to turn to gold to get).

Gold for logging in is pay to win, because I don’t get gold when I log in. And the amount would exceed any money that players put in so you can’t say that it’s equivalent to buying gems to turn to gold.

Your suggestion HEAVILY restricts my trading post access. Not cool at all. Not even in the slightest. Lowers the gold sinks of the game?! Now everything becomes more expensive for me because inflation. With the increased raids and what not, subscribers earn more money than me, which only turns the game into a divide between subscribers and non-subscribers with the latter falling behind.

NOTHING it gives will make it anywhere near acceptable to me. Pay to win is a despicable way to con money out of players by making it too hard to be the best without forking over real money.

Alright, yeah, this post confirms it. This is a clever ruse. We have all been fooled. Let us all take a moment to wallow in chastisement, for we have been “owned” by this “epic troll post.”

Done wallowing?

Good. Now, for one last actual point of discussion: For what it’s worth, I agree that Anet does not need to resort to insane moves like this to enhance their revenue. I mean, they could, and it might work at least long enough to snatch some money and escape the burning building before it collapses in a fiery wreck, and I’m not entirely convinced that they’d be above pulling such a move, but…well. Okay, I don’t know where I was going with that. Jeez, what a negative thing to say.

I “get” it. At least, I hope I get it. There are folks on the forums who will defend literally any brilliant Anet decision that introduces more sinks, of time, gold, resources, and gems, and the modest proposal in the OP serves its purpose: to show the logical conclusion of the path we’re headed down this very moment, to perhaps shock people into awareness. I don’t like it either, but I also don’t know what to do about it. Do you?

Account wide bags would be pay to win as well. It’s a real PITA when a character without a BLTC gets a key. I have to take them to a bank (when I may be in the middle of nowhere and no real desire to go to a bank), then take a character with a chest to a bank (when they may be in the middle of nowhere) to withdraw the key. Account wide bags would avoid that. Pay to win.

So would player housing.

The only way to get people to buy an optional subscription is to make it pay to win so there is NOTHING you say that can get me to get on board with something that I utterly despise.

You know they have:
$10 = 800 Gems
$20 = 1,600 Gems
$35 = 3,500 Gems
$50 = 4,000 Gems
$100 = 8,000 Gems

You can pretend they have a SUBSCRIPTION FEE by buying one of those every month or as many as you like every month.

Now that’s a Great Idea. Thanks, Evga.2471.

Responding to the opening post:

On the rare possibility that this isn’t just a troll thread…..No. Not a chance.

While making the game free-to-play wasn’t the best idea (mainly due to the limitations they’d have to put on new accounts), a premium subscription, let alone one on the level you’re suggesting, is a stupid idea that would only regress the game and ensure its downfall.

And…one of the main points of this game is that there are no subscriptions, required or otherwise. You’re suggesting that they betray one of the things that made their game as good as it is now.

So…..no. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

1. As a non PvP player, I don´t even know what that is supposed to mean.
2. Daily scratch for winning a skin? So you get a scratch for a chance only to win something? Sounds a little bit like " Convert your ascended armor for a small chance you´ll get some dark energy" . Both things I would never do or pay for.
3. So the bank has a bouncer now and he only let´s you in the house for a limited number of days? Sounds strange.
4. Reduced waypoints. Ok.
5. WvW has a bouncer now too and only let´s you in a few times. Why not just kick wvw players straight from the servers, or even better, make this also for PvP?^^
6. An unlimited grinding spot is what this game needs so bad as I need my kneecaps to be bashed in by a sledgehammer.

The OP is suggesting ANet adopt a freemium model (in this case, buy to play with an “optional” monthly payment). The problem with freemium models is that in order to make the monthly payment look like a good deal, it has to include things that either are too good or it has to deny basic services/features to non-adopters. Freemium models or straight-up sub models are rental fees for whatever features they include (up to and including being able to play the game). ANet has avoided this model, and for very good reasons. It stinks for any player who does not play enough to make the rental fee worthwhile. This was one of ANet’s target demographics for GW2.

I suspect that the best thing that those who want ANet to succeed can do is to buy gems, which is the payment system ANet has determined is best for both them and the game.

And how well China’s Gw2 is turning out…… =D

Why not?
I’ll finally have time to try Blade and Soul.

Your joke probably would have gotten more shock value if you changed the WvW restrictions to raids or fractals instead. XD

You can look at NCSoft’s financial reports and notice Anet dont’ need to do that.

They make enough money from cash shop.

  • I think you are underestimating how much money anet makes from people who buy gems to convert to gold (especially since anet keeps nerfing and/or removing most farming spots in this game)
  • It’s already bad enough that anet pulls stuff like ‘HoT having only 1 glider’ but within a month time 7 others have appeared in the gem store.

China has a subscription program called ‘Royal title / VIP benefits’ (or something like that). It costs 1250 gems every 30 days (see https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Royal-Club/4571749 )
This image sums it up too: http://imgur.com/a/k9GA4#12

Let’s see how GW2 is doing in china:

I’m not saying GW2 isn’t doing well in china because of the subscription, but the sub most certainly didn’t help there either.

And when the “VIP”-files were found in the english version of GW2 the community was very clear on it’s hate for a subscription: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/VIP-Membership

(I didn’t find recent numbers/stats)

If Anet need money, just make BLTC keys way cheaper and sit back and watch money rolling in.

That would be embarrassing and I would indirectly spam everyone – but ok, for science, I guess…

Most of times, it was because of a random gank or a big battle in a pvp zone. It was fun to see kittens dying. The drama was real in this game lol.

-Can use tradeing post 10 times per day.

That was for gold membership … you didn’t say how often a non-subscription player would be able to access the TP …

Now … what would those gold+ subscription guys buy from the TP if the majority of the players (i.e. non-subscription guys) cannot access it to sell the stuff the guys want to buy?

Be aware that the materials are mostly from casual players who then get bought by the leet players who can’t be bothered to stop their raids to grab a pick and do some mining. With the implementation of your suggestion it would take one or two months for the TP to be drained of raw materials and then you could no longer buy all that nice damask and deldrimor steel but you’d have to farm the mats yourself.

This would most likely make the subscription guys stop playing altogether then so in the end you’d have emptied the game of the casual players first and after a short delay of the paying players as well … which game company do you work for that has an interest in seeing GW 2 go down the drain?

OP: You’re gonna have a really hard time convincing the playerbase to pay for subs when the lack of a sub is one of its biggest selling points.

I know they need to make money, but they won’t make any money by kittening off everyone and making people quit the game. I’m sure their sales department knows this, which is why we don’t have a sub right now.

I had a whole post typed up about what we should do and everything, and about how stupid those ideas were but then i realized it’s a troll…. I mean, how can this not be a troll they’re sudgesting that existing content types (No, not features but entire game modes that have been there since the beginning) get taken away (I am in a wvw guild that rallies almost every night and usually raids for 3+ hours. This would kill any remaining desire i still have to play this game.) and people still can’t stop kittening about how HoT put guilds behind a pay wall (even though it’s all new features and you didn’t have anything taken away from you, you spoiled little babies) and how the game is p2w now because most of the elite specs are strong.

Clearly OP must know that idea is stupid, and is trying to subtly point out how much worse things could be (and in fact are in other games), and how being asked to pay for once peice of content in 3 years isn’t all that bad… except that it’s not having the desired effect and people are simply mocking OP. I get it though, you’re trying to show us how bad it could be for the sake of illustrating that it’s not really that bad, and that people need to stop complaining about HoT being a paywall. I see what you did there OP!
(at least i hope i do, because otherwise i’d have to be sad that so much stupid got condensed into one post)

I understand ANet is a business, but when you market a game as no subscription ever, then adding one that locks away content that was in the game, you are asking for your game to die.

A lot of players have not been happy with the direction and choices ANet have made since HoT, this would be the final straw for a lot of people, not to mention completely killing the p4f model that they’d just rolled out.

The way ANet works things is great. You like something on the gem store, you buy it, you want a gold boost, you buy it. Years gone buy I’ve supported ANet with a fair amount of money, and they best thing is, I can give them as much or as little as I want.

Your idea is a very pay to win. Or a company that wants to get every last drop of cash out of it’s game before they turn off the servers.
