Recently, I found myself in some water in Orr and attacked by a risen. If I were on land, or under the water, I could have done something to save myself. Trouble was, I was on the surface of the water, where our skills are disabled. That didn’t end well.

I’d like to make the suggestion for anet’s consideration, if it’s possible, that being on the surface of the water should allow us the same skills as being under water.

Or, if I’m misunderstanding the situation, is there any way to use a skill when on the water’s surface?

I agree. Orr is really bad at leaving a few spots where the water is deep enough to prevent you from standing but too shallow to dive and have skills. First time you get stuck there its pretty kitten annoying

It is indeed weird that you can fight underwater without breathing and wearing all that heavy armor, but hey paddling on the surface? You are helpless!

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

This should be adressed once and for all. Just make you able to use your land skills on the surface. To not be able to do anything just because you are moving with water at your chest is stupid.

Put on swiftness while you you swim, passives are still active even if the skills are disabled.

It makes the place a little more deadlier, isn’t it great ?
Anyway they stopped supporting water related things, so I doubt that will be addressed any days.

You can’t do that on land either, so what’s your point?

You can still attack , block, blind, Condi clear, heal all of which you can’t do on the surface of the water.

It’s like getting immo mid air. There’s nothing you can do.

You can but that doesn’t change the absurdity of having a few places in the game where you literally have access to no skills yet enemies can still attack?

Which has nothing to do with my point… which is only that while you’re on the surface of the water, you can still dodge. Dodging is still an available action.

And you cannot dodge if you are immobilised, which risen like to use as the first skill often. Therefore you cannot dodge.

You call it an absurdity, I see it as just another (minor) challenge. If you can’t wait out an immobilize, you have a very faulty build. And, an inch into the water and you have your skills back. This is a non-issue.

Removing an immobilize is different than dodging. Two separate actions. That doesn’t change the fact that dodging is available while you are swimming on the surface.

My comment was not directed towards the usefulness of the dodge, nor suggesting it’s available no matter the condition you’re inflicted with. All things being equal, dodging is as available on the surface of the water as it is in the water as it is on land. It exists. That is all.

You’re picking an argument that does not exist.

It doesn’t matter if you can dodge or keep your swiftness going. It also doesn’t matter if you know how to avoid being caught in that situation or not (personally, I never have problems avoiding the “no skills” situation). The point it is a very ugly and stupid fail in the gameplay design. IF it is intended, its a cheap patch. It looks more like an overlook/rush thing to me.
Those things should be the first ones to be solved, IMO. The game is excelent, but this kind of things destroy the experience.

I don’t believe the answer is surface skills. Just fix it so there are no dead spots where you are stuck in surface mode.

I agree that there should be skills available when on the surface of water. Look at what water polo players can do on the surface of water. Certainly a great hero of Tyria can do something while on the surface.

Dodge. Apparently. Which I didn’t know.
Would be a bigger deal if there were more places it happens. Could be made less of a big deal by moving the mobs around in Orr (the only place this has ever really bothered me) or fixing the lack of skills apart from dodge when on the surface.

What no one has mentioned so far, and perhaps because few remember, but when GW2 first released aquatic skills WERE available while swimming on the surface. ANET disabled it i think within a few weeks of release because some folks figured a way to bug the downed system while underwater.

Given that they have had this capacity in the past and chosen to remove it, I suspect it is unlikely they will reverse that decision and put them back in the game, especially with the current lack of emphasis on the aquatic environment.

Not picking an argument huh? You can also open your map and waypoint the split second before an attack hits you as well. Obviously nothing is wrong with being immobilized in a state where you don’t have any skills, because of your ground breaking suggestion.

Also what was your point if there’s no argument? Dodges exist?

I said nothing about being immobilized. Its just absurd, plain and simple, that there are a few places in the game where mobs are allowed to attack you and you are not allowed to use your own skills. That’s it, its just absurd. Its not something that should be killing you, but that doesn’t change how absurd it is as a design feature (or bug more likely)
