It’s awesome when you use all 9 maximum character slots per server to create a character of each profession, and assign a different craft to each of them (there are 9 total).

However, if you already assigned a second craft to one or more of your characters, it is impossible to unlearn! This is extremely annoying when you try to hover above each on the character selection slot when you need to craft something and log-in with a specific char.

So please, ArenaNet, add the simple ability to unlearn a craft from the craft master or something. Thanks.

Hopefully they’ll do something with it.

Or just make it account bound and be done with it.

Great idea too. Automatically unlock all crafts for all GW players, and give them the ability to account-wide lvl them. I like that. It simplifies things significantly.

Yes! I’d love that, I accidentally chose a craft on one of my chars and now I get confused as to which has what craft….the ability to maybe hide it from the char select (the ones not active) would be nice….

I mean making it account bound is probably….too much, though it’d be awesome if it is imo…

Account wide would be reasonable now that they have added the feature that all crafters share learned recipes.

Or you could, you know, write it down on a piece of paper. A sticky note stuck to the monitor? I have way more characters than nine, so made a spreadsheet that I update occasionally and print out, scribble on, then update the spreadsheet and start over.

Pick a secondary crafting that you know which toon has max level of that crafting, and give it to all the toons who need a second slot. You know which toon has max scribing or jewelcrafting, so you won’t get confused by seeing it on other toons.

Just want to clarify two misconceptions from your first post. Firstly the maximum is something like 70 characters per account. Secondly your server choice is account bound so all your characters will always be on the same server, if you change server it moves all of them together.

Secondly I agree that it would be helpful to be able to unlearn a crafting profession sometimes, but I think it’s fairly low priority.

I think it’s fairly easy to remember which character knows which craft/s as long as you have some sort of system. (In my case I shared them out between my original 4 characters based on what I thought they’d choose, then my 5th character became my Scribe. The other 4 don’t know any.)

But it would bother me if I accidentally picked a craft on a character I didn’t want to learn one, or if I started levelling one then changed my mind. Like I said it’s a very minor thing but it would bug me, so having the option to remove it would be nice.

(Or maybe hide it, since otherwise we’ll inevitably have people accidentally removing level 500 crafts and having to get Support to restore it, if they even can.)

I’d like to be able to prune crafts as well. Something about that big orange triangle draws my mouse and more often than I like I’ve gone to use a crafting trainer as a merchant and accidentally clicked to learn it. It wasn’t a problem at all until we got crafts showing on the character select screen. It’s not a huge problem now, since I originally assigned crafts to alts based on a combination of role play and profession and can list which one has which max craft without having to look (I have one max in everything but chef and scribe — I have two max chefs, and scribe is stalled around skill 50). Still it’s a bit of visual clutter I’d like to remove. I think I have learned scribe on several alts now from using the guild hall to sell junk

To prevent accidents, how about a confirmation box like we get for deleting unique objects? You’d have to type in the name of the craft you’re deleting and click Yes.

Due to the experience gained, they likely can’t do that. But it would be nice instead to have an option of none as a craft for those situations.

Given that every character knows all the recipes of every other, isn’t it easier for the community for people to remember which character is maxed in which crafts than to have ANet design, test, and implement an entirely new mechanic, one that will require ongoing maintenance costs?

What if instead ANet hid the crafting discipline icon from the logon screen if

  • The crafting rank is under 400
  • The character level is 80

(I’m presuming that’s easier than removing the discipline entirely)

Another alternative would be to give us some customization of the character select screen (needs some QoL TLC anyhow — I can’t imagine trying to find one character out of 70).

  • Choose which disciplines show per character or by minimum rank
  • Sort by level, character name, discipline+rank, profession, hours played, etc

A lot of players use crafting to level our characters So some of the characters will learn some that you will never max out. I, myself, have several that know the same profession, but only one has it maxed out. You do not have to learn crafting on a character either. So really you do not need to unlearn anything. One character can learn all the crafting disciplines, and have 2 active. Other than that, it does not affect game play.
If there was an unlearn crafting, you would not get all that money time and experience back.

The log in screen shows the crafting profession of each character.

To clarify, the main problem with this is that it only shows the two currently active crafting disciplines for each character (maybe 3, if you have additional crafting licenses unlocked? not sure, I haven’t bought that gem shop upgrade yet). Before I realized that it cost a chunk of silver to switch back to already leveled crafting disciplines, my first character maxed out multiple professions (to the max of 400, at the time) and so it can sometimes be difficult to remember which 5 professions I maxed on him, and which professions I maxed on alts after I wised up.

I have it pretty well under control now, and I think it’s probably an easier solution to just use handwritten sticky notes or spreadsheets to store this info locally, though. It would be a nice QoL update to see all inactive crafting professions a character has leveled up on the login screen, but it’s definitely not even close to a priority in my opinion. Even as far as proposed QoL changes go, I think this one ranks pretty low on the list.

I’d say having a placeholder craft called “None” would be best. It lets players hide crafts, but won’t cause problems if a player then changes their mind about removing the craft.

Spreadsheet, definitely. Massively powerful. And a second screen, so that you don’t feel that you have to keep printing and scribbling.

I have one spreadsheet for GW2 with all sorts of things on it that I want to keep track of, and to check from time to time. Character professions and levels; which ones have finished their HoT elites; story steps (PS, HoT and LW, current and completed**); birthdays; crafting skills; approximate area completion; roughly what their armour and build is; even trivia like what answers they gave at character creation, and which Tyrian Order they joined. I have 37 characters spread over 2 accounts at present, and I play regularly with RL friends who are only casual players; knowing reasonably closely which character has done what is very useful when we’re discussing what to do in a session, therefore.

**Completed steps because, whilst I do it less than I used to, I enjoy levelling new characters from time to time, and exploring content. When the PS offers me a choice, it’s nice to know which branches I’m least familiar with..

I also have sheets within the file showing me things like the approximate break-evens on some types of item salvaging; MF costs and progress; recipes for time-gated materials. And from a time when I was using it to generate cash, one I can plug the current cost of basic crafting mats into, plus the current TP prices of a selection of finished goods, that will tell me what the approximate likely returns would be. At the time I needed it, that sheet handsomely repaid the time taken to write it. Anything I want to remember for a while, or research, just goes on another sheet.

Easy, if a little messy.

I have 3 characters: Able, Baker, Charlie. Each is my primary crafter for one craft. When I hover, I see the following:

Able: Cooking, Jewellery
Baker: Cooking
Charlie: Armorsmithing, Cooking

Who is my primary for what?

Edit: There may even be a “best” craft to pick in place of Cooking in the above, depending on how the code works., so that the extraneous craft is always displayed second. I’ll roll a level 1 when I have a few spare minutes, take a look, and update this.

Edit 2: OK, it was an idea, but it only works in terms of the displayed “current craft” icons, not the hover text. Once you’ve increased your skill past 0, the craft always shows in the hover text. So you could still, e.g., simply set everyone’s unwanted second craft to Armorsmith, and just look for the icon for the craft you actually want.

(There does seem to be a consistent sequence, though; hover text displays in the order Armorsmith, Chef, Artificer, Huntsman, Jeweller, Leatherworker, Tailor, Weaponsmith. No idea where Scribe comes; I don’t have access to it, but I guess on one end). Icons left to right for the currently active craft follow the same sequence reversed; so, e.g., Chef will always be left of Armorsmith, but right of the others.)

An icon change when you maxed the craft, or perhaps even indicating the tiers.
Would help this issue as well and would require no new logic or data changes.

On the login you would just see the craft with a tier indication (or perhaps a loading bar like overlay) and you would instantly know where that particular character is at.

I just use GW2 efficiency on a separate screen, that also lists the rank of the crafting for each character, which Anet could do as well.

I also like the active vs inactive crafts, with inactive crafts being darker or just hidden.

They could just add it to the info display when you inspect a character on the select screen. Or attach the rank to the mouse over info.
This last solution would take like 2 minutes to code in.

I have this same issue, and it’s not a huge one to be honest, but it is a bit confusing, especially if I’m logging into characters parked in LA to confirm their crafting level. I agree that having an icon change that indicates either max level professions, or your highest level in a given profession, seems like a reasonably simple way to resolve this. If the API calls are messy across so many characters, they could even cheat and cache the information in the local client on character logout, since 99% of use cases would have people either already at max level, or always using the same client, and when it’s changing because you’re leveling the profession, you probably know that anyway if you use 2 clients.

IMO a better idea, at least as far as the login screen goes, is to just display the crafting rank next to the icon (0-500, whatever it may be for that profession). This doesn’t address un-learning it per character, but it better displays the proficiency at a glance. It should honestly have been that way from the start.
