Suggestion: Transmute Salvaging
I like this idea. Especially making them a separate salvage kit. That way your inventory isn’t cluttered with skins from normal salvaging and you introduce a good way to convert armors when leveling.
Though perhaps I’m misremembering, wasn’t the older transmutation system even more limited? We had one type of transmutation charge for Lv1-79 and one for Lv80 and both were items that actually took up inventory space. They were still consumed when transmuting and we still had to do map completion to obtain them. Was there another system before that one?
Yeah I think you’re right. It’s been so long I don’t even remember the old system. But I do remember transmuting my chars multiple times a day just for the lulz and never having to worry about charges running out. They must have been easier to obtain back then. Anyway that’s a moot point. The point is the current system is kitten, and we desperately need a new option.
Transmutation was never free. The old system required either a level 1-79 transmutation stone, and they were handed out like candy on Halloween, or a level 80 transmutation stone which were, more or less, gem store exclusive.
The new system is so much better. Please also note that you can get transmutation charges from SPvP and your daily log in rewards. If you do your SPvP dailies every time you play you’ll have more transmutation charges than you know what to do with.
With that being said, I don’t mind your idea but I likely wouldn’t use it. Transmutation charges are super easy to get and I’d more often than not just slavage equipment for the mats since you can unlock the skins to your wardrobe doing that anyway.
Only place “transmutations” were free was the old PvP wardrobe system, but that wasn’t really transmutation because you just had a separate equipment window and equipped statless gear that had a specific skin – of which you could only store one of in the wardrobe at a time, so if you had two of the same skin and didn’t have a character that could use it, you either had to waste an inventory space holding onto the extra or destroy it.
Transmutation Charges are almost free if you have an open character slot.
It only takes about 20 minutes to map complete all 6 main city locations, which yields 6 transmute charges. If that’s not enough, delete your new character, make another one, and do another 6 from just the main cities. 20 minutes time isn’t all that much.
I much prefer the new system. I find transmutation charges easier to get because they’re always the useful ones instead of virtually useless level 1-79 ones.
But the biggest change for me is the wardrobe saving skins. If I decide to transmute my ascended coat (which I made mainly for the skin) I can do it without worrying because all it costs to get it back is 1 charge. Under the old system I’d have needed to buy a splitter from the gem store or make a new ascended coat.
It also means I can make ascended trousers for my main and re-skin them, then use the skin on an alt who actually looks good in them, instead of having to give the top tier item to an alt that doesn’t need those stats.
Your suggestion sounds like a return to the old system where in order to use an items skin with different stats you had to destroy it, which would be a major barrier to me transmuting anything.

The new system wouldn’t be so bad if there was a way to obtain transmutation charges aside from map completion and the gem store. Those are two really lousy options.
So how about it? Introduce new salvage kits that salvage a weapon/armor piece into a skin instead of into materials/essences of luck. Make these salvage kits relatively easy to obtain (basically anything besides map completion/Gem store…)
PvP give you free T charges. if you’re only PvE, there are arenas run by PvE people for PvE to do the PvP dailies.
ANet may give it to you.

You never could “transmog to your heart’s content for free” — it always cost stones or crystals; it always cost more time than now; it often meant spending storage space for skins “just in case”. It was only seemingly cheap for sub-80 gear because stones were plentiful.
In other words, the OP mentioned the good parts of the old system, but none of the bad:
- It was more cumbersome: you had to carefully select which skin to keep and which stats. Now, skin & stats are completely distinct; you only change the skin.
- Transmuting for low-level items seemed cheap, because transmutation stones were plentiful, while crystals (needed for L80 gear) were not.
- Town clothes could only be used in town and there wasn’t a large selection.
- Transmutation required you to have a skin and an item; if you transmuted over a skin, it was gone forever. The new system permanently unlocks all skins.
- The sources for stones (and charges) were mostly the same: map completion, gem shop, and BL chests.
There are only two things the current system lacks compared to the old system:
- The old system allowed you to move runes & sigils.
- The old system offered a seemingly-cheaper option for sub-80.
The first seems to have been a loophole (ANet wants bigger sinks for upgrades, apparently) and many people work-around the second by using outfits until reaching L80.
All that said, there are two parts of the game that could be updated to add transmutation charges:
- Luck has no value after reaching MF300. Perhaps the game could offer transmute charges for luck.
- Those who have maxed masteries have no use for XP, so perhaps every ‘level’ could add a charge.

Old system was worse than current.
For you to get transmutation charges for gear above lvl 80 you’d have to either get it from BLChests or BUY from the gemstore.
You would get free charges from doing exploration and all, but those were limited to gear 1-79.
So what you remember transmuting for free was all the newbie gear and stuff that was below 80, everything else was more expensive than what it is today.
Specially since you get transmutation charges for free on so many stuff.
U get tons if trans charges by advancing a tier (just 5 pips) so def worth playing leagues for it
