[Suggestion] Upgrade Extractor Revamp
Right now the upgrade extractor costs 250 gems, or about $3.13 USD. Also, 250 gems costs about 44g 49s 14c as of writing this. These prices are ridiculous for a single use item.
Right now the only upgrades in the game that are worth this are Superior Sigil of Generosity, and Superior Sigil of Karka Slaying. For everything else, it would be cheaper to buy a new copy of the upgrade. In most cases of runes, it would be cheaper to buy a full set than to extract a single one with the extractor. Anet, this is nonsense.
Here are a few perfectly viable ideas that honestly shouldn’t cost Anet any significant time or resources to implement. Requesting any one of the following:
- Make the extractor have 25 charges, just like any other type of salvage kit. Keep the same price of 250 gems.
- Reduce the price of the single-use extractor to 50 gems.
- Make a Gold-Fed Upgrade Extractor with unlimited uses. Give it the robot voice of the other “Fed” salvage kits. Have it consume 5g per use (or some amount that seems fair, and not prohibitively expensive). Sell it for 1000 gems.
These are just a few ideas off the top of my head. I find it absurd that the current version of the extractor has been sitting in the gem store for all this time. It is clearly a giant rip off and a waste of money. I’m sure just about anyone here has plenty of better ideas. Feel free to post them.
@Anet: Think about what this digital item is. It’s digital. It’s not like you have to manufacture physical goods and pay shipping costs. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by making this item more attractive.
First of all, due to the price, its intended mostly for infusions, which can cost quite a bit more than 50g.
If everybody could salvage expensive exotic runes and sigils off their gear for 2g via them gem exchange, the prices on the tp for those upgrade components will basically be hardcapped by 2g, unless the gold price for gems will go up.
That would have alot of consequences for a variety of markets. Prices for materials that are used in crafting expensive upgrade components (common, fine and rare t6 mats, sprockets, spore samples, ectos…) would lose alot of sinks over night. It would also devaluate alot of exotic drops, where the upgrade component represented the highest value of the salvage result.
We would also be left with no real sink for exotic upgrades anymore, if none get destroyed anymore in the salvaging process or are removed before forging.

I find your proposed ideas as perfect changes to make this item appealing. Right now it is a monstrosity.
The 25 uses for 250 gems is too many uses, but let’s say 5-10.

It’s not meant for runes or sigils at all. It’s primarily meant for infusions, some of which can cost 2-3 times the upgrade extractor.
The only way the upgrade extractor would have more than 1 use, is if there was a significant chance of nuking the upgrades in the process.
I think it’s the wrong solution for the stated problem. This extractor is intended for infusions, not runes or sigils. The question is whether there should be a way to recover things that are worth 2-10 gold and if so, what that looks like.
The old transmutation system was designed to make it easy to move those upgrades from one piece of gear to another. The current wardrobe doesn’t allow for that, so maybe there could be a similar setup:
- Use a transmutation charge to move an upgrade into your upgrade locker.
- Upgrade any gear you have from your upgrade locker.
- Add some sort of limitations to prevent stockpiling or other things that could disrupt the markets. Perhaps a limit on how many you can store or for how long.
I’m not against making it easier to preserve expensive upgrades. I just don’t think the extractor is the right tool for that job.

Agree I would like something like the old transmutation system.
Perhaps transmutation stones purely for upgrades?

Minor caveat to that though. You’d only be able to use the rune/sigil as many times as you put it into the “locker.” That way just putting one in doesnt let you use say, all 200 charges you’ve got putting them into cheap gear, salvaging with a BL kit, and selling for profit.

I think John Smith mentioned that the side effect of preserving upgrade components with the old transmutation system was unintended, so alot more upgrade components re-entered the market than they anticipated.
There arent really good sinks for exotic upgrade components and i doubt they will change the current system without introducing a new sink as well.
