Suggestion: Include “View Wiki Page” or “Show on Wiki” option in the dropdown menu when right-clicking on any item.

The /wiki command is one of the strongest features of this game, in my opinion. It lets any player who wants to learn more about an item (or anything else for that matter) view the wiki page for that thing to see tons of useful information about it.

But not everyone knows about the /wiki command. Even though it’s often the #1 answer in mapchat whenever someone asks a simple question.

Since the /wiki command is such a strong and useful feature in the game, why not take it one step further in making it easier for people, particularly new players, to discover it?

If we added a new option to the list when you right click on an item (the dropdown menu) that said “View Wiki Page” or “Show on Wiki” or maybe even something like “Learn More (Wiki),” it would have the benefit of letting that information be seen by more people.

Maybe it would even encourage more players to participate in the wiki.

From a technical standpoint, it could just grab the variable info (the item name) from the item itself when it runs the wiki command. I’m not one to ever say adding anything would ever be “easy” to the game because I have a rough idea how complex games, particularly MMO games, can be, but I at least think the idea is simple enough that it might be doable without a ton of hours going into making it, since the /wiki command already exists, since the item name is already tied to the item being clicked on, and since wiki pages for items use the same name as the item itself.

The /wiki feature is such a strong tool, but since it requires knowing that chat command and the game never really tells you about it (I don’t think it tells you anyway), why not leverage the advantage of that tool by letting it reach more people? It would benefit everyone, but particularly new players.

tl;dr when you right click on an item there could be a new button that takes you to the wiki page for that item to learn more about it.

I’m curious what other people think about this idea. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it suggested before but I’ve had the idea bouncing around in my head for a while now. Is this a good idea? Would it have some problems associated with it that I’m not thinking of? Do you like/want this idea? Thanks in advance for the input.

Sounds like a great idea. I can’t imagine what the disadvantages might be, other than surprising a player with their game minimizing, and the Wiki page opening. The Devs might put one of those warnings in that says the game will minimize; I’m not sure how difficult that would be.

Good luck.

I love this idea. But then, I have two monitors. /wiki requests open in Firefox way over on the right hand monitor and I just move the cursor between the screens as needed. No game minimizing involved.

I hadn’t really considered that some might find the minimizing/window focus shift disruptive. I guess misclicks are also a possibility. I think your idea of a warning/confirmation box would be a good idea. Maybe the warning/confirmation box could include a checkbox that says “Don’t show this warning again” for those who don’t mind it. In case someone wants to reset that warning/confirmation box later, there could be a button to do that added to the Options menu on the General Options tab to reset the warning/confirmation box.

Another thought I just had is that this “View Wiki Page” feature could be used by right-clicking chat links as well. That would be pretty useful to find out more about the things people link in chat.

Other than that I can’t come up with any other problems with this. What do people think? Is this something you would like to see in the game some day?

You may have to be careful if you put a confirmation prompt for the minimizing. Currently, the only prompt on that list is the Destroy option. I don’t want to think I clicked “Wiki page” —> “Yes” out of habit, when in reality I clicked “Destroy” --> “Yes”.

I’m sure I’ve seen the ‘Game will minimize’ warning before, somewhere. It might be when choosing the ‘Support’ option, or something.

To be sure they would have to make this confirmation page look different enough from the Destroy confirmation prompt. I definitely agree that this is important so that people do not make this mistake. You make a very good point.

I’m glad people are pointing things out that I didn’t originally think of when coming up with this idea. Definitely a good idea to think about these things beforehand in case we luck out and they do decide to implement this. What do other people think? Is this something you would use if they decided to add it to the game?
