I’d really like to have an option in-client to only receive whispers from people who are either in my guild or on my friends list so that I could permanently stop the spam I am currently getting from [euphemism]. I’m not sure how much work it would take to implement, but I think most players would agree that it’s well worth it.
Also it would be nice to see a flat threshold for how many mails you can send within X amount of time (which is currently 2 mails) and simply increase it to 5-10 for players that are in your guild or or who have added you as a friend to hamper their efforts as well.
I like the way you think. I’d love to end the “suppression” mechanic for guild/friends lists while blocking all others.
Though there would have to be some care taken to make sure suppression affects your followers that you haven’t guilded or friended yourself. Or the spammers would merely friend you and then boom, be in your space again. And for added sophistication, it should allow someone to whisper you if you whisper them first, so you can still help folks out in the zone with their questions or need to portal a JP or whatever. If both have the filter on? Arrange in Map to drop it for a moment, or even to friend each other on a temporary basis.
Heck, add a “temporary friends” tab for these brief pairings, let us set a time limit after which the person is gone again, and give a pop up acceptance for Temp Friending so you only get the ones trying to help you (and add in a toggle to disable Temps so you don’t get spammed with boxes until you want) … yeah, I’m dreaming.

Remember way back when there were so many bot trains killing mobs? They had odd names, then started using ‘real’-looking names, then started belonging to Guilds.
Pretty sure the gold-selling spammers would quickly find a way around the whispers-only-from-friends, etc. if there were any allowances to speak to anyone unknown.
I, too, wonder why messages of any kind are not filtered if they contain certain key words.

Since you have to opt into a guild or add someone to your friends list to receive whispers in the proposed system there’s not really any way around it short of hacking possibly.
I’m still not sure what you mean, but we’d still have map chat, say chat, team chat, party chat, and squad chat for helping random people and all of them exist outside this restriction. Also as I mentioned this would be an opt-in filter with a checkbox in the settings that is unchecked by default.
I’ve whispered people I don’t know before. Sometimes people ask something in map chat and I answer but it chat moves so fast that the person doesn’t see my answer so I repeat in a whisper. Or else the answer is kind of long and I go ahead and whisper the answer so map chat isn’t taken up with it and we discuss it. Either one of us having restrictions on whispers, and we’ve likely forgotten its there, would be a problem.
I personally don’t mind getting whispers or emails from gold sellers. It’s another chance to report them and get them out of the game. If I was doing something where I didn’t want a whisper from anyone, I would turn it off on that chat for that time.
As I said opt-in filter meaning that each person can individually choose whether preventing unwanted whispers or getting helpful whispers is more important to them. You may be willing to deal with whisper spam, but a lot of us, dare I say most of us, find it unacceptable. I literally had to log out of the game yesterday because it got so bad it became unplayable.
Gold sellers really need to be blocked. They make me feel bad on so many levels and i wish I never had to see another one. But…
Most people who have picked a different language already block me by default in mapchat and say. I cannot help them that way when they ask questions. If whispers are blocked too then it becomes hopeless.
I am always delighted when a player whispers me to ask a question or just comments on something we witnessed. It is rare, but is does happen. Not all people I have met have ended up in my contact list even though I found them pleasant and would be happy to meet them again.
sigh On the other hand, perhaps it is better if the people who only want to associate with their chosen ones can have their way. But then I would prefer to get an automated message stating that the person takes whispers only from select people instead of just wondering why they never replied.
