the character select screen seems to be set in the clouds or daytime. how about having a button where we can toggle the character select screen to be dark?

That’d be a neat change. It’d make my sylvari mesmer cooler to look at when I log in with her.

There is such a button. You have a light bulb symbol. Click that and it changes from day to night. I use it all the time for my sylvari characters so I can see their bioluminescence glow which only shows at night.

This. It’s the one on the right of the 3 above ‘Body Features’.

There isn’t much of a difference – except when you’re making a sylvari (because then they start glowing) – but that’s because there’s not much difference between the light levels in-game either. At night everything is duller, but not much darker.

Bunter & Danikat, you two are talking about Character Creation, OP is asking for this to be added to Character Selection, after login.
