Also.. which class is your preferred ‘support’ in each of those situations..
Thank you..

Ill let you know that support isnt a real role in this game and people dont tend to appreicate those who try to play that role.. Now that we got that out of the way ill give you an opinion on classes that could try to play that role.

Guards would probably be the best since we have alot of aoe buffs and heals and we have reflection skill. All of that is handy in dungeons or wvw and you will be welcome into any party. Not exactly sure how you plain to play support in the game so ill wait for a response before continuing on.

Well.. I guess I’d like to be not focused so much on dmg numbers but on providing condi removal or important buffs (like banner warriors/spirit rangers).. I know healing isn’t really a role per se, but I know some classes have access to nice/appreciated water fields.. so I guess that’s sort of what I had in mind. Some melding of all those (or some of them) into a class.. but a class I can take to PvE, WvW, sPvP and still not be a hindrance.

It is possible to get good (not Berserker level) damage out of some classes while providing support.

You need to look at the synergies of traits, visit the game wiki for discussion of actual numbers of abilities associated with those traits, and gear appropriately all using math.

I’m sure there will be folks who strongly disagree with this post, however, my guild has been 4-manning all the 5-man content including Explorables and Fractals with a least one member built/geared this way without compromising reasonable dungeon speed.

Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist, Ranger and Necro (wells/protection spec) all lend themselves to support with the right build. Necro also works in WvW and SPvP.

Guardians are the most acknowledged for providing support and probably more readily accepted.

Guard.

Go full damage and still give group support.

Or go damage/support in your trait tree and use zerker for pve and something a bit more sturdy for WvW. Going glass in W3 can be bad these days with the current zerg happenings.

What weapons would you say are best for this DPS/support Guard you’re talking about? I prefeeerrrrr not to melee… but I realize melee tends to out dps ranged.. for obvious difficulty reasons. Is scepter a decent pve weapon for guards? or are you better off with like staff + a 2hander…

With the right spec, a scepter can be used successfully on a Guardian for range as an alternative weapon. And can be used in WvW appropriately. Throw in a torch with that and with the right gear, can do decent damage in dungeons. Mace/focus is a good alternative for the other weapons or mace/shield. However, those are melee.

What you will hear from most players is that greatsword is the way to go.

It’s probably best, if you are going to go staff, to pick up a another large weapon (Hammer, Greatsword) as your alternate weapon to take advantage of the large weapon trait.

Again all dependent on build and playstyle.

with a guradian you dont need to trait / gear for support but instead can have a damage build and use utilities and such for support.

you could do a mix…but damage is probably the best unless u mainly wvw where you should probably go support

I think the elemetalists and the guardians (i dont play guardians) are the main suppor rolesin this game, i realy enjoy playing with my ele in dungeons, I can remove tons of conditions, give tons of boons to the party (stacking might, protection, regeneration(that removes conditions), use ice bow/FGS when needed (icebow in AC so OP) + i do a fair amount of damage. Knight armor (runes: 2x monk, water, fire) and a mix of celestial/bersecker trinkets and 0/20/0/30/20 traits

Not good at english ^^

Don’t be fooled, most classes can make a pretty decent support build if you know what you’re doing. It’s just that guardians are perhaps the most supporty natively, and aegis is super amazing. I for one play a thief spec that is really easy for me to just change which traits (without respeccing) and my gear and switch to venom share to share conditions and life steal and use things like shadow refuge for party healing and rezzing downed teammates fast in stealth, and keep weakness on stuff to make their hits hurt my team less. It can be a little awkward, because you have to stay pretty close to people to venom share, but they are increasing that radius with an upcoming patch.

It really depends on ‘how’ you intend to support your team.

For example, the Guardian does so though Aegis and buffing those close to them, making them perfect for melee and/or stacking groups. The Elementalist has some of that as well, but they also boost their allies through their combo fields (making attacks cause chill when fired through an Ice Field for example, burning or might in a Fire Field, or make them heal when used in a Water Field). The Ranger on the other hand, can buff all allies through their spirits at longer ranges, but their buffs have a chance to activate instead of always. And mesmers can spread boons/conditions through their staff attacks, clones and chaos fields, but being random chance you never know what you’re gonna get exactly, just that it’s useful. Thieves can support with blinds and stealth. Engineers have a whole range of different abilities. Warriors have their banners and shouts.

It’s true that all professions can support to some extent. The real question is how you wanna support them.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

My only problem with spirit rangers is that their spirits die very easily from AOE.. :/
