Survey: Who wants 2h Battle Axes?
Kind of necroing this here, but:
I just started playing this awesome game and i was…confused…to see there are no 2-handed axes around!
What about the good ol’ “2h sword fast but weak, 2h hammer slow but strong as hell and the 2h axe goimg the middle way”?
I would be highliy pleased if those would become a thing here too!

You design the weapon skills for every class.
please bear in mind they must be unique, differentiated from all other skills in the game, and both bring something useful but also be balanced.
You might as well go ahead and design a model for each currently existing set while you’re at it. Oh, and don’t forget to create a visually appealing legendary with some sort of unique effect to it, and a corresponding precursor & mystic forge recipe.

Design so it become a class speciality weapon.
That means it is lv 80 only and no need to design for each current set. It can be released to certain class at first so much less skill will be needed.

Many of those are the same just different styles, most of which are already in game,
well since it’s already disturbed from it’s year long sleep, i wouldn’t mind a glaive.

2H axes, while I wouldn’t argue, don’t seem to have a role or overly unique look to fill.
2H axe would be slow, cleaving, high damage. Sounds just like Greatsword.
Not sure if land-spear would be much different, though it could at least have more straight-line attacks and less cleave.
I’d be hyped if fist weapons made it, though.

Gw1 was known for cosmetic skills since their were so few overall.
Gw2 has a single bar as well though we have less customization since were locked into weapons, heal, and elite. More skins, cosmetic weapons, even sub weapons of existing weapons. Like a GA wielding Mesmer who actually swings the thing instead of spamming lazers like the GS. The fact that weapons are locked behind elite specializations and that skills are replaced for utilities just makes it worse.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. We have :
2 handed gun. 1 handed gun.
2 hand hammer. 1 hand hammer (mace)
2 handed staff, 1 handed staff (scepter)
etc. But we only have a 1 handed axe. Needs more 2 hand! <3
Yes, 2-Handed Battle Axes FTW. Crossbows and land adaptations for the current underwater spears would be a good additions. Anything else though would likely just be gimmicky and pointless, imo, going by some of the suggestions here. More than half are are just real-life variants of weapons already in game and without any notable difference that could be represented in a game such as this without just feeling like another sword, greatsword, or w/e or are just highly specialized weapons you’d only ever use in a specific case. Alot of them can literally be summed up by the current weapons in game. No reason to for those kinds of suggestions, imo, by anything that can be defined by what already exists in-game.

spears are a lot faster than greatswords, so there’s that. and the only greatsword that will actually swing slowly will be reaper’s.

with revys using staves more like a polearm, some more ‘bladed staff’ skins would be nice.

Don´t hold your breath. The whole game agenda is about dumbin… errrm, streamlining the player experience now. Less choices, not more. Not more additions that need to be balanced. Apart from specializations, which can be marketed as expansion content, I doubt you will see any weapon additions to old classes.
Autocrossbow kit for power engis, please.
2H axes would be nice, but I have some concerns about how many classes it’d fit in.
Also, it’ll be missing all the existing skin sets unless some massive work is done by ANet.

I call upon this thread to ascend because reasons.
I see that there might be staves that look like polearms (Lightward and Reclaimed) so if somone wishes to fight like that, then such person has to play revenant or daredevil. It looks like we won’t have any polearms.
But a battle axe is something different so I vote: YES
I do like the idea of new weapons, but let’s remember that any weapon added would mean adding more skills, more balance, etc to the game.
Still…It’d be nice to have them!

A whip would also be loved, with a whip I can finally enslave the Asura.
Keep in mind to introduce a new weapon they also have to generate dozens of new skins to fill in at minimum the crafted, dungeon, fractal, Achievement Point, and WvW sets so characters looking to use those weapons have equivalent access. Then add 2 more miscellaneous skins for Champion boxes and potentially another skin for every single black lion weapon set ever.
All to deliver 2, 3, or 5 new skills that they could potentially do just as easily by using an existing weapon in an new Elite spec. And with an elite spec they don’t have to do skills for 3-6 professions all at the same time to justify the art department workload.
Then they get to recode every drop table in the game.
It’s not that it can’t possibly happen, but realistically adding new weapons ain’t ever gonna happen.

Two Handed axes would look great for Vikingish Norny characters.
I would love a poison blowdart for Ranger/ Necro types – Its in the game already so don’t see much work to shoehorn it in as a weapon offering.
But before they think about putting in 2 handed axes, I think they need to realize just how poor one handed axe is and sort that out before reeling another weapon in-game.
But yeah… poison darts. If that ever comes in, I wear my Tiki mask and swing from vines in nothing but my underwear.

You are right, adding new weapon means a lot of work on balance, just like with elite specializations.
Now bear in mind that a new weapon is much less work as it only stands for adding 5/3/2 skills (depends on weapon type) and perhaps a trait or merging some traits to add 20% cooldown reduction and something extra to it.
The real problem is envy which means that battle axe might never be wielded by certain classes, so in that case every class should get some sort of a new weapon.
I call battle axes for soldier type classes for sure!

Anyhow, there’s some non-fantasy real life battle axes if the ANet team needs any artistic inspiration.
I never understood why 2h axes weren’t in the game. I get that some might not want to make the game like any others but unless your wanting to add something that is or points specifically to another game it shouldn’t matter. 2h axes have been around far longer than any video game so not having them because another game used them is just silly. You would end up not being able to use ANY weapons with that mindset. As for the “use a greatsword” maybe they just don’t like them. It’s a style thing.
Yes, it would be an adventure adding anything new to the game but not impossible. Most of the skin set concepts are fleshed out enough already to make it easier to add a new base model. They could even drop it in the Trade Company window as an upgrade to help cover the costs like a mini expansion.
The idea of making it a skin for the hammer is interesting but that would steal the hammers thunder as it were. I would love to see it with its own set of skills.
As for the professions I’d say Warrior and Ranger possibly even Guardian. Some of the weapons have only a few professions that use them.
+1 for 2H axes in this game.
I just love massive scary bladed weapons; anything like spears/Halberds is awesome and I think it would add a bit more variety to the game overall.
Lack of great axe/ two handed axes is disturbing in this game. They should have added it from the beginning. There is a bloody race that should have been using it, Norns

Yes I know this is a very old topic of nearly 3 years now but it has been left abandoned since it involves minor skinning and rendering (1-2 days) and could potentially net 700 gems per purchase. There is actually a very high demand, just most are too lazy to post anything on the forum is all.

I disagree; a greataxe would not suit the guardian’s hammer skill at all, for one.
I mean, the actual motions you might make would look much the same, but its not as suitable for the ‘ground slam’ type attacks that seem to feature heavily in the warhammer’s repertoire.
Not that i have any suggestions for what skills a greataxe could be given. 1h axe covers most/all of the obvious ones already anyway.
If they are going to add any new weapon, I hope it is something more interesting and
different from what we have, like chain weapons or boomerangs.
