Apparently, I have been “temp banned” for inappropriate language for 72 hours. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the swear filter? they added that to the game for a reason and in their Code of conduct, they say “No swearing.” then let me ask this, why would they add a swear filter with the option “off” if its against the rules of gw2? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the swear filter? You might as well remove the entire thing all together.

I know what I’ve been reported for, warned for, sprout in game and have not been “temp banned”… GW2 is actually pretty good in this regard.
Mate- whatever you said, however many times you said it, or who you said it to must be bloody amazing – but I suggest you probably deserved it.
Grats.
but no warning?
The filter is there for people to avoid seeing that kind of language. Simple as that.
Just cause there is a filter though, doesn’t give you the right to use inappropriate language whenever you want. It is still against the rules to use that kind of language, the filter is just there so players don’t have to see it.
Regardless of a filter or not, don’t break the rules and you can avoid this sort of thing.
but no warning?
Why should they warn you? When you bought this game you agreed to their rules. Yet you went against that and broke them any ways. You broke the rules knowingly, thus you don’t deserve a warning. You get punished directly for breaking the rules you agreed to when you first started playing the game.
but no warning?
As I said – amazing – grats.
For those out there who don’t see the humour – turn the filter BACK on.

yet first offence is a warning unless placed to the extreme, which I have not.
I agree, to a point. Yes there is a filter, but that doesn’t mean to use profanity in excess, especially not in map chat. I would suggest to keep it minimal even in guild chat if you have a lot of people on that aren’t familiar with your type of personality. GW2 is great at monitoring this sort of stuff, they wouldn’t have issued a temp ban at random. I have problems with swearing, too, but that’s why I don’t type in map chat very often, and use my guild’s teamspeak.

Swearing’s a pretty minor offense, and you shouldn’t get temp banned on the first violation. Just a warning. If it were something more serious, like botting or exploiting, sure, ban away without a warning and let the appeals process sort them out.
Doesn’t matter if it was a minor offense or not. Trust me, I get what you are saying.
It is simple and clear. You knowingly broke the rules that you agreed to not break, and now you are being punished for it. That’s just how it works.
I’m not against you or anything, just giving you the truth is all.

exactly, I don’t swear heavily, only occasionally, like most people, and yet, no warning, and they temp ban me. Most people just get away with a warning.

I actually need to show quite a bit of care with the profanity filter and tone – most of the more offensive things I COULD say would not be caught by it as they are not low register or commonly used slurs.
Tone I think is more important – they are very interested in making sure that the kids don’t get hurt, if they think they’ve been hurt – they’ve probably been hurt, THAT will gain more attention than a slip of the C word I suspect.

Usually if you are banned for inappropriate language, it is because you directed it at someone in an offensive/provoking manner. Like using it as an insult or in an argument. Then you’ll get banned for it. They barely ban people for saying things like “That is <censored>ing awesome!” or “You are one awesome mother<censored>.”.
It is only when you use it in an offensive/insulting way that they take action.
Warnings make sense when you might not know you’re in violation of something. For example if the game had an unwritten policy forbidding foul language (just something you “should know” as part of the community) then one would expect an informative warning. The EULA makes it clear though, and since you have to agree to it to play, there’s no need for a warning.

I almost never swear at someone, never in this game at least, yet countless times, happened to me.
and what you said, apparently, thats how i got banned, i might of said something like "****ing awesome!. but thats it.
That was yesterday when i got my extoic with ascended ring from fractals.

So wait, you have been banned “countless” times for inappropriate language, yet you keep doing it? Did you not learn anything from the previous times?
It is logical to assume, that if you are banned for inappropriate language, you should probably watch your language. And if you are banned “countless” times for inappropriate language, you should definitely watch your language.
Yet you went and did it again any ways regardless? Now I know why they didn’t give you a warning. Sorry, no offense, but you deserve this ban if you have been banned “countless” times already for the same thing.
Learn from your mistake so you don’t keep repeating them.

Refer to my post above about tone, sounds a lot more likely you made someone feel bad and they reported you for language, hence the language ban…

No, countless times someone swearing directly at me. Didn’t mean to give you the wrong idea.
I would very rarely swear at someone, only once it happened in game and that was Runescape, (2010) most of the time i wouldn’t bother doing it because its a waste of time and isn’t bothersome.

The age limit of this game is 13+, if i am not correct?
You should have been notified that you will/would be blocked in the future, for the specified amount of time.
It is not as if kids will not learn the words on their own, from playing any other game or friends in Real Life. Just because a swear-filter is there, does not mean it prevents you from swearing. It just blocks it on the other person’s view.
I’m not going to side with anyone, however i do think the temp-ban was a load of bologna.
If i were to say “AWE, FK YEHH MENG” because I got an exotic, would I be tempbanned for expressing my happiness?
It crosses my mind that someone took offense to Sweatys’ words, and reported him for it.

My mistake then, apologizes.
The thing is, action is only taken if you take action. If someone is swearing at you, nothing will happen to them unless you take action. Obviously someone took action against you swearing, either at them or in general, and Anet felt it necessary to take action.
In the end though, you still broke the rules that you agreed to. Just serve your time and remember next time to keep it “family-friendly” when in game.
Unsurprisingly, this topic comes up often. Here’s one of Gaile’s many responses:
The filter is not intended to serve as a “License to Swear” for users who choose to use offensive language. It is presented to afford some protection against offensive language, but we still uphold the stated rules regarding chat.
I like this analogy that a player posted a few months ago:
“Cursing in public chat channels is like cursing at an Olive Garden. You’ll get kicked out if someone complains. “Their kids could cover their ears” is not a valid excuse. Guild chat is more like a backyard BBQ. Swear and drink all you like — it’s your party. Threaten someone, though, and that’s still assault. Yes, I know we’re adults and hear plenty of bad things. It wouldn’t hurt to act like one every once in a while."
The temporary ban is your warning. The more you get banned, the worse it gets, which eventually leads to account termination.

they ban you for swearing in a video game rofl what kind of person doesn’t swear in a video game? Like this is so stupid writing this makes me jiggle a little.

I’d prefer to see half of the above words replaced with utter profanity – as long as it improved the sentance structure, and made it more readable overall.
Another day another thread with only half the story.
You were banned because you broke the TOS, end of story, stop trying to garner sympathy when you were being a kitten.

Who doesn’t swear? Well maybe someone who can actually show some self restrain. Swearing while speaking and swearing while typing are not the same thing. This former is most often unconsciously done while the latter is consciously done. As in you have to actually type the whole swear.
Also for intonation. You can not read any tone from a written sentence unless you are given the tone in advance. So it doesn’t matter in what spirit it was written. This is why sarcasm doesn’t work when written down unless it is extremely exaggerated.

Right.
That is definately shows insight into online communications.
I’ve been swayed.
You are awesome.
There’s swearing and then there’s SWEARING.
If you say to some, kitten I fell off. You’re not likely going to be banned for that.
If you say to someone kitten you, well that’s a direct insult. The profanity itself is less important than how it’s being used.
What I assumed what happened was. Some one told the OP to stop swearing. The OP said that’s what the swear filter is for and proceeds to swear even more to spite them. They report OP. OP gets a justified suspension and comes onto the forums to complain about it.
Is that a correct summary?

actually, no one said anything about it.
The filter is there to protect others from seeing swear words on their screen. It is NOT there to give you a license to swear, in fact it states clearly in their rules that swearing is forbidden.
Those swearing out loud can blame it on impulse. There is abolutlely no excuse for swearing in a computer game where you have to think first and then type the words which means making a conscious effort to swear.

A 72hr ban IS just a warning imo. If it were something more serious, you wouldn’t get warned but perm banned.

What kind of person swears in a video game?
on TS I can still understand it and even in whisper- I have said cr@p on occasion after a really humiliating death.
Swearing in map- chat is a no no in most games.
@ OP it is clearly against the rules and the filter is just there so others don’t have to see it- consider the 72 hour ban a warning and don’t do it again.
It has nothing to do with whether others do it or not- the fact is you must have been reported, hence the ban
My lawyer asked me yesterday why it was I never swore. So I told him my maternal grandfather’s idea that obscenity and blasphemy gives most people permission not to listen respectfully to whatever was being said.
I repeated an old story Grandfather Wills had taught me, which was about a town where a cannon was fired at noon every day. One day, the cannoneer was sick at the last minute and was too incapacitated to fire the cannon.
So at high noon there was silence.
All the people in the town jumped out of their skins when the sun reached its zenith. They asked each other in astonishment, “Good gravy! What was that?”
My lawyer wanted to know what that had to do with my not swearing.
I replied that in an era as foulmouthed as this one, “Good gravy” had the same power to startle as a cannon shot.
Hi everyone,
As stated, the fact that there is a filter does not mean you can go all out and say what you wish. A modicum of behaviour and good manners is expected from players, filter or not. In the future, please mind your words, as people can be offended.
Thanks for your understanding.
