So I’ve always been one of those MMO players that loves to have a main. I like the idea of dedicated most of my time played to one single character. I feel like when I focus on one, I learn so many different little tricks.

Since launch I have played guardian. I have racked up thousands of hours, received my birthday presents, and done my one and only map complete on the same guardian that i made on day one.

However, I recently found myself having much more fun on thief. I love the sneaky style game play and it feels more rewarding in pvp and pve.

After much thought, I really want to make my main my thief. There are just certain things that I can’t seem to get over. One is the amount of time I put into Guardian and another (which will sound silly) is that my new “main” wouldn’t receive their new and shiny birthday gifts when all of the other “day one” players will.

Any thoughts or advice from other players who have been go through with the switch?

Your guardian will continue to receive birthday gifts even if you never play him again and those gifts are account bound so I don’t really see a problem there.

I don’t see how having put time into your Guardian is a bad thing. You’re switching chars doesn’t invalidate or ruin your time on your Guardian and you don’t lose anything by switching. I can’t really see what the problem is for you.

ofcourse you will when your new main reaches 1 year it will get a birthday present aswell.
and you can always log on your guardian to grab his present aswell.

Play what you want.
I actually used to main Guardian myself. I put in 2k hours on it and barely played anything else. One schism in my wvw guild later I end up playing PvE more than anything and discover Elementalist. I end up discovering what real dps is like and get hooked.

I haven’t really had any problems with having alts. Since switching over, I find myself less and less with a “main” I have become primarily a dungeon player, and have all but ranger and necro dungeon ready. I have found that there are some places I prefer one profession and some places I prefer another. I also have found that because of this, I am enjoying the game more and I have a better understanding of how party dynamics should work.

I say embrace the change. You’re not missing out on anything if you’re not playing your Guardian.

Thanks for the support guys and gals. I think I need to just accept that I have more fun on a different class and move on!

The thing here, is that it’s all about your thought-processes. You want to have one character that you call your main, and you want your main to be as ‘cool’ (or whatever adjective) as possible. I can understand why you want that: my own main has been the same since day one and always gets the best treatment, although I do extensively play alts as well.

But, as far as the game is concerned, nothing changes when you change your main. It’s just about how you play. Your guard will still be there with all his stuff, getting birthday presents, and you won’t ever really forget how to play it. And, of course, you’ll still be able to play it, even if it’s not your ‘main.’

Making the decision to change mains isn’t irrevocable, you can instantly change back if you don’t like it. Or perhaps you’ll discover that you like having a couple of different characters you can choose between in different situations.

So just take the plunge, or whatever, and switch your main to thief, if that’s what you want to do. You really have nothing to lose.
