Taimi should have been a boy?
I honestly never noticed.
Craft the appropriate body parts and hammer them on to Scuffy and call him male if this is bothering you enough.
ANet may give it to you.
There are 2 males and 4 females. Yes, you could probably make it 3 males and 3 females (like the original destiny’s edge), but is it really that big problem?
Also, remember, that the core DE 2.0 group has 2 humans but no sylvari (no, Trahaerne is not part of it, and Canach was coopted only at the very last stages of LS2), so i don’t think the intend was to “mirror” Destiny’s edge. There were other, far more important (from the designers point of view) considerations.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Well Kasmeer is lesbian, right?
So maybe Taimi is transgender?
Social progression?
Boys are ugly, dirty, hairy, and just plain gross so…

I had thought of Scruffy but you know, he did die there in the end but we will probably get to see this awesome new machine that Taimi was going on about. Besides that I didn’t bring him into the conversation because he is not really a person. And further to that if we were to include him then we would have to include Rox’s Pet and who knows what gender that is lol…

None of them are actually people nor are they actually male or female. They’re all only pixels and their gender is only an assigned appearance.

I just think the group could do with an extra male. Like I said if you ran through the LS2 more than once (as I have on a lot of alts). You start to notice just how much the female population out numbers the male. The only male there (besides you if you are a male char) is Braham. I guess it might seem like a lot more females because Caithe is there for a part of it as well and so too is Eir. Rytlock and Logan not so much.
“Also, remember, that the core DE 2.0 group has 2 humans but no sylvari”
This just shows exactly what I am saying here, too many females and not enough males. Maybe we could get Marjory to change her Gender, it has happened in game before……..oh wait a minute, that was from male to female…….again more females…..:P

They don’t actually speak either. Real people, whose voices match the pixels assigned gender, speak their lines for them.

I didn’t realise a characters gender was a big thing to be honest. Does it really matter?

As far as the story telling goes, I guess for me at least yes it does. Could you imagine watching a movie for example where all the chars in it were all one gender. Yes I know that it has been done in the past for some movies, especially old ones or ones based around wars etc. But lets face it, it soon gets boring and offers very little in differences between the characters after a while.
Sure we may have different races here so that can offer some sort of differences, but still. I wonder what the ratio of Male/Female the Anet staff is actually, now that could be an interesting thing to find out. Dare to let us know Anet? :P

Maybe it’s because your thread hit a nerve.
Maybe you’re only joking but the underlying thought behind what you’re saying is sexist and is something men have said, and still say to this day, to exclude women from jobs. Too many women, let’s hire some men. Disk jockeys on radio station have reported that if they play more than a few female singers in a time period, there have been men that call and demand more male singers.
If you don’t believe it’s sexist, try this thought experiment. Let’s say this group of NPCs are a mix of black and white and someone jokingly makes a post on the forum saying, there are too many blacks in this group. Can’t we switch one of them to white?
So, you’re undoubtably joking but too many women is something I’ve heard too many times in real life to find particularly amusing.

You know what the standard group make up you see all the time in fantasy is? 3 or 4 guys and 1 girl. You can deal with more female characters in something that is not a rom com for once.

It might sound “intense” to you, but that makes it no less true. I can’t count the number of times anymore where I have played a game (or read a book, or watched a film) with a party that was five-ish dudes and a token woman, usually the mage/healer/ranger (or equivalent), and I internally squeal every time there’s more than one female character present.
And personally, I find it pretty funny how games can be total sausage fests and no-one bats an eye, but as soon as the numbers are reversed, it suddenly becomes a big deal to some… frankly, to me as well, but mainly because it makes me happy to see it done for a change.
And usually, it becomes a (negative) big deal to the same crowd who tend to very vocally shout down anyone tentatively asking if, maybe, we could have a few more women in video games, seeing as we play them too and all? The mental gymnastics done by some people will never cease to amaze me.

You forgot:
Pet – Gram – male
vs
Pet – Frostbite – male?
But to be frank, having symmetry and balance is very much bland and expected. Instead of having DE 2.0 be reflections of the old DE, they should have just went a new route like introducing a larger group or like 8-10 guys or something. You can cover more bases while also spacing out interactions more so you get tired of the current cast less. Or perhaps its just me, I just don’t care much for any of the current DE. I don’t hate them or anything but most players tend to gravitate to a particular character (or set of characters)…
I must say I really enjoy the composition of characters for DE 2.0. Yes, men are underrepresented, but then again it’s usually women who are underrepresented and all the heroic deeds are reserved for men only. So it’s only fair to have a female dominated group of heroes for once.
One could say that Braham, as a Norn, counts as twice the “usual” man, but I find that he also does not fit into the stereotypical male role of an unstoppable Rambo-type hero. He shows his insecurities and emotions, cares a lot about the young Taimi and generally emphasizes the soft side of men, which is very unusual for a hero.
As I said, I like that Anet chose to have this group composition. It’s a welcome deviation from the male dominated norm and puts female heroes into the spotlight.
Should Taimi have been a boy? Hell no! DE 2.0 is perfect the way it is.
Ok so I think I am pretty observant sometimes and as such I have noticed something with Destiney’s Edge and then with Destiney’s Edge 2 (your group in the PS and LS). That being for your group they simply just swapped around the genders for the races with the exception of Taimi. Let’s see what I mean:
Destiney’s Edge
Human – Logan – Male
Norn – Eir – Female
Charr – Rytlock – Male
Sylvari – Caith – Female
Asura – Zojia – Female (yes there was also Zaff or what his name was, but he’s dead we never got to see him in game, he might have been in the books but for the majority of us all we know is Zojia).Destiney’s Edge 2
Human – Kasmeer – Female (and an extra bonus female – Marjory!)
Norn – Braham – Male
Charr – Roxx – Female
Asura – Taimi – Female
Sylvari – Trahearne (he sort of fits in as the replacement being he was a big part of our PS, but moving forwards for reasons I wont go into here we can replace him with Canach since he seems to have taken his spot). As you can see they have gone the politicaly correct path and covered every gender and race. You can also see for Destiney’s Edge 2 the exception is Taimi. She should have been male? Why is this an issue for me lol? It’s not really but I did notice one day that there are too many females in our group and there was only ever one male (Braham) for the most part as Trahearne was off doing his thing and Canach is only really making his appearance now.
I think our group (Destiney’s Edge 2 as some people call it) needs another male char just to offset all those females. I would propose a playmate for Taimi and bring in a boy to not only fix the mistake that was made but it would also make some sense if we are to copy Destiney’s Edge too as there was both a male and female there if you count Zaff.
Thoughts lol?
If anything its something new to discuss if not important or whatever. :P
Seriously? You want to comment/debate about the composition of male vs female for Destiny Edge 2?
What is wrong with having all female heroes? Or what is wrong with having 5 male heroes? or what will it be wrong to have 2 males and 3 females or vice versa or any other combination?
Is it even important that we need to have more males or females in a team?
If the team member can do his/her job, I don’t mind having an all female or all male or 3 male 2 female, 3 female 2 male, 4 males 1 female….etc team…..

Well I certainly don’t disagree. Minority representation in all forms of media is so imbalanced that it brings about emotions where someday none arise because of the spread being normal.
It’s still, even in this game, scantly clad women with only breast coverings in light armor with males in the same wearing shirts. I guess it’s because I am actually looking at my Conjurer skins now that I notice it.

Wow, that’s pretty intense.
I suppose so. But a nerve can only be hit so many times before it becomes “intense.”
I’ve also seen this request more than once, most often back when this NPC group was new. I suspect it’s usually guys that are asking as women rarely ask for less representation, especially in an entertainment field where female NPCs are commonly the token female who has to be rescued by the men.
In a video game where the chars are only pixels and are equal to each other in strength, abilities and story line possibilities, it makes me wonder what the underlying reasons are when it’s asked to change an NPC from female to male when the reason is, “too many females.”
ANet may give it to you.

Hey, I don’t disagree; I was just surprised it spilled into the real world politics. Maybe Taimi being a girl is more important than I thought. She’s also a genius which is another trait typically tied to men. Hm.
uhm…
i think Snaff is important even though he died..
because he was the more important asuran member of Destiny’s Edge 1 i would say and not Zojia

Wow I’m super impressed with this community’s ability to discuss this maturely.
And I’d count Canach more of a member of de2.0 than traeherne.
And and I’d say no to the op. Like really really no. In fact their reaction to the gender imbalance is the best response one could ask for, since now they understand what it’s like to experience 99% of the medium as a woman. Where all your representations are token , barely effective, and in most/the worst cases not meant to even pander to you. Hell I’d say y’all cashed out with Braham and freaking Canach! They’re at least complex characters!
Yay art!
Honestly though how can you say gender choice was more than a coin flip... Why try to read so much into something, that may not have any merit? this is nothing but "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs"
Men are the oppressed gender now, especially in video games; like Black Desert for example. Difficult times.
Taimi’s a great character and I’ve never thought to myself “Gee, this character sure is great… but she would be so much better if she were a boy.”
Just never entered my mind until I happened upon this thread.

See this here? Stop it. You are not acting like the person Mr. Rogers knew you could be.
I don’t discriminate anyone because of their gender. All of them, old edge and new, are just equally annoying and boring to me.
Anyways, it is pretty hip to have many powerhouse females in your media nowadays.
Thb I think a lot of people have thought much more into this than I had intended. Maybe it’s a cultural thing I don’t know. But I am from New Zealand and tbh I guess we may not have it as bad as other places such as you. After all we were the first country to let woman vote as well as other basic rights. Heck we have had a female prime minister or 2 now as well. For those of you in the Usa sure, that is still to happen.
My posting was merely a question was the current DE2 group mirrored specifically oppsite to DE? As it seems highly unlikely it was just a coincidence that they were all the opposite gender (except 1 thus the reason for this posting) and if so why was it Taimi chosen to be the special one?
I like to give Anet credit for all the hidden things that they put into game and the Easter Eggs. So really is it such a bad thing if something like this is spotted and then placed here for discussion?
Maybe, just maybe this was intended as a subtle way to comment on the social problems that do still exist today in this day and age.
No one seems to have commented so…
Zojja and Mr. Sparkles – Female and Male
Taimi and Scruffy – Female and Male
There, politically correct distribution. :P
Honestly though, who cares?
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Whoa. This thread kind of took a left turn from when I read it this morning. I didn’t think the OP intended any sexism at all, but rather noticed an oddity: That the token member of each race in Destiny’s Edge had been swapped to a different gender for DE2.0 except for Asura with Taimi. I never noticed or considered this at all. I don’t think it’s a big deal myself, but I did find it interesting.

I’m surprised no one brought up that Zojja ( F ) was apprentice to Snaff ( M ) who made the grand heroic sacrifice. Men… Always getting immortalized ( Snaff Prize #asurabeginnings ) and women? Meh.
But seriously I enjoyed this thread.

Ty, I did miss that, but again it does fit into my theory lol. And I care, like I just said in the post above yours – what is wrong with spotting all the hidden things that Anet put in the game!?
What is wrong with bringing to light a possible hidden comment on society that a game company might have put in the game? It’s like they say about publicity, there is no bad publicity. If it brings to light certain things and then for discussion then what is wrong with that?

Tbh the reason you usually see more male chars in games than females (especially in the leading role) was obviously because the target audience and majority of those games/styles were males. Of course this is all changing and has been for the past 10+ years even. No one is here saying “get rid of all these females and ONLY have males”.
Again I think some of you are taking this far too far and are getting a bit too defensive. Again I think it maybe a cultural thing.
I hope with the next expansion that Destiny’s Edge 2.0 story arc will be finished. The gender really doesn’t matter to me. I just didn’t think they were very interesting characters. I think a new crop of npc’s could add some spark to the game.

I have just gone through the LS2 again on one of my alts and I kind of see what you are saying. Actually some of the cast seems less involved or didn’t really do anything. This continued over into HOT as well it seems. Especially with Kasmeer and Marjory. Perhaps they have just been bringing in too many new chars or telling so many stories at once some seem out of the picture or getting less story time?
This could explain some of the reasoning for some chars getting killed off too. So they can focus more on certain chars and take the stories into new directions. Maybe you will get your wish.
At least it came up a little. Zojja is only an honorary member of Destiny’s Edge. Snaff is the actual Asuran member. Zojja was just his apprentice and probably not a complete member, especially since they basically broke up immediately after Snaff died.
She takes his place when you put them all back together, but based on Snaff, the redistribution works just fine for Taimi. Also, I guarantee that the Devs noticed that distinction.

I do not understand what’s wrong with someone understanding a fact of life that many people have gotten used to for years? There was nothing malicious about that statement at all. o.o

Aha you might be right here and could explain the Taimi exception. So let’s just HOPE that she does not die and then get replaced by a male. Because like most people I do actually like her. Despite the fact she seems far too small compared to my human players even if she is just a progeny.
To be honest I wish there could be more group combinations that we don’t normally see. Always trying to be politically correct in order to make everyone happy just kills any creative freedom imo. Also, if we do get something different it does not need a “special” reason either.
Like, say there is a new main group that just happens to be 4 female charr and 1 female sylvari. There does not need to be a reason for them being all female or mostly charr besides the fact that they just happened to be the best heroes Tyria has at the time.
Bleh, I am bad at explaining things…
I like Taimi as a character. Sure they could have had a likable male Asura just like her (the PC Asuras male and female offer some of the best voice acting in the game…“let the storms rage!” “Your soul is mine!”) but it wouldn’t be Taimi anymore.
I agree with adding more members to Destiny’s Edge 2.0 to help fix the ratio. Maybe add a male Nuhoc and Kodan and have those races be prominent in the next expansion since they’d have the people and tools to deal with the next dragon?
Hell I’d say y’all cashed out with Braham and freaking Canach! They’re at least complex characters!
But Braham is dull and Canach is very unlikable and untrustworthy with an attitude problem. The only Destiny’s Edge 2.0 characters that seem cool are Rox and Taimi, the rest are either dull or unlikable.
A game that consistently gets likable characters right is Street Fighter. Rashid, Zangief, Ryu (may seem dull but is endearing), Chun-Li, and Karin and the ones who aren’t likable (Birdie is repulsive) still have lots of personality and character and a deep story.
Yes the game objectifies Mika and Cammy but the characters aren’t wooden and the story mode in Street Fighter games is good. If you read Chun-Li’s wiki page you’ll understand that she’s a good person:
http://streetfighter.wikia.com/wiki/Chun-Li
She is a highly disciplined, seasoned, and courageous woman, and is often the voice of reason. As a offical of Interpol, she takes her work as a cop with pride (showing pride at what she does when she saves another). Outside of her duty as a cop, she has an elegant, sweet, and feminine personality.
So we can see she has positive personality and character traits and has a history with other characters. I think Guild Wars 2 or any game can learn a lot from Street Fighter’s characterization and story telling, not to mention its amazing balance and solid mechanics.

I sorry but I thought Canach is the Slyvari member for Destiny Edge 2.0 eventhought he didn’t became a member until HOT….
Even then, who cares about keeping the gender numbers “balance” in the game??? Is there really an issue for having more females in the group? If taht is the case then isn’t the idea that Eir being the leader of Destiny Edge (eventhought she shown more skills as a leader) would raise an issue since in a sterotipical cliche, it would had been Logen especially when he’s a human.
It would be like making one of the Crystel Gems male just so that it is two males and two females in the group from the cartoon Steven Universe. Yes I know the Gems are technically genderless but given to their apperance and all.
Throw in a Tengu (any gender)! Why? Because the Tengu have begun to understand they need to take part in the fight against the elder dragons and start tasking their best mercs to show everyone how the birds handle things.

You might be on to something here as I think I am yet to see a female Tengu….must be MORE observant!
Obviously the reason is that all male asura are evil
