Targeting in GW2, what do you think about it?
If they could change one thing for me in WvW is target enemy above everything else. No more thiefs using the moa’s to hide in.
And the annoying bug when you dont have a target and do a leap, it somehow remembers the old target and causes you to do something you dont want to do
I used to use a combo of target nearest and TAB when needed, but when they changed the target nearest to target literally ANYTHING without any regard for logical details like line of sight or field of view, without simultaneously adding any options to allow individual players to filter or prioritize what gets targeted…I switched to click targeting. For those that use that method it is an absolute pita in many instances and virtually impossible in others which might imply how much I despise the current target nearest implementation.
IMO, the targeting function should allow a user to prioritize various types of targets. For instance, I almost never need to have any form of autotargeting include yellow targets or inanimate objects, even if they’re attacking trebs or other such things. They don’t move, so I can easily click them. What I want to attack 99.9% of the time are the aggressive mobs that are in my field of view, with priority on mobs attacking me, then those that are nearest, and then, possibly those in field of view but which aren’t attacking and may not be in LoS but still in FoV. If a situation warrants targeting neutral moas and/or things out of my FoV, I should be able to finesse the setting checkboxes (or whatever) to enable that.
I.e. I want a targeting mechanism—something that is arguably one of the most important aspects of a combat-based MMO—to suit ME, not a one-size fits all methodology. Granular vs globular.
I fully realize this may be restricted by extra drain on processing resources what with thousands of extra details having to be assessed before a target is chosen. But…I still want it, and still dislike the current methodologies/options…all of them.
Also, I’d like a proper method of 100% clearing of targets both for myself and pets/minions. Currently, it’s entirely hit or miss. I can do all the usual things to supposedly clear a target, yet sometimes I’ll come back into view of a recently attacked, but “cleared” target, and I and/or my pet/minions will start attacking again. Another thing I notice is that if I target and attack a mob that moves through me, I lose targeting and stop attacking. When I move to regain LoS, I don’t start auto-attacking again (this is intentional as far as I know). This is in direct contrast to the first example, which causes me to start attacking again when I DON’T want to. It’s very annoying.
Removing all targetting will do the trick. No more complaints, all ranged nerfed. Perfect.
I just hate it when I’m clicking a thing to target and, if I use any ground targeting skills, the target has a good chance to become untargeted or I might target something else under the ground reticle.
That and target nearest targetting something outside of my field of view just because some object or whatever happens to be behind a wall but technically closer. Just target the closest thing I can see!
But yeah, I tend to rely almost completely on mouse targeting now…
Targeting in GW2, hmmm… there’s not such thing.
You can rely only on the mouse cursor, if you manage to find it on the cluttered screen.
Horrible, I made a thread in the bugs section months ago. Need a paddle for that dingy though.
Since then I still frequently target monsters out of range and obstructed (same time), monsters that aren’t aware of my presence instead of the 5 surrounding me. The occasional white rabbit instead of the monsters kicking my head in too. I think they fixed the yellow moa at Claw though, haven’t attacked it instead of the shield for a while.
Ps. Yes I use auto target a lot because I can’t find my cursor in the heat of battle a lot.
If I press TAB to target something, I want the targeting take the vertical centerline of my screen as reference
I’ve had this complaint since I began MMOs back in the days of WoW 1.0. What I want to target is nearly always focused in the center of my screen, so make my target cycle from the center, spiraling outwards.
(the best targeting method though is supporting eye tracking)
Targeting is absolutely broken in the game since release.

I want my clones to target what I’m targeting, at the time of which I’m targeting it, at the very least. Then my own skill has to come into a little, and the one I just spat out won’t chase after a harmless rabbit a mile away. It would also be nice if the lazy ones (of which I’ve had a few lately) would also actually bother to do something productive, instead of just standing there looking for all the world as if they’re contemplating the universe and their place within it. Their inexplicable inaction has lead to much gnashing of my tootles of late, I can tell you.
This game has one of the worst targeting systems I have ever experienced.
There are 3 critters visible. One 30 degrees to the right of where I’m looking, hitting me. One 30 degrees to the right of where I’m looking, hitting me. One dead center of where I’m looking but out of range of everything but a megalaser. I tab and guess what I select? Yep the one that I can’t hit with anything that any profession has due to it’s range from me. Come on! Or I end up targeting some yellow critter minding it’s own business and not either of the critters hitting me and thus aggroing it so now I have three critters hitting me. Thanks.

It’s not a bug, you have auto-targeting on.
[feat]
Worst targeting system of any game I’ve ever played. I have had mobs right in front of me, attacking me, and hit Tab only to target a yellow critter off to the side of me almost beyond max range.

Nope, never used that.
This game has one of the worst targeting systems in any recent game I’ve played, I think.
Its just so hard to target what I want to target. I can’t target a boss in the middle of a group of players because I instead end up targeting every player, pet, mini pet, and whatever else is in the group instead of the boss itself. Half the time when I’m trying to click-target an enemy, even if my cursor is right on top of them, I’ll click and end up targeting nothing. Tab targeting is more reliable in that at least you’ll target SOMETHING, but half the time its something behind you or off camera or whatever instead of what you actually want.
It’s funny reading posts like these.
You realize that over the last few years you’ve inherently been compensating for an inadequate system and getting used to its failures.
Thank you for reminding me.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
:< I expected some more ppl to contribute to this thread, so I’ll try again and bring it all the way up
discuss!..
..and make arenanet aware of your thoughts about their flawed targeting system.
Hope the current tab targeting is a bug and not deliberate.
Like i said b4, they made great progress & advancement with the camera collision & all.
Now I see they need to do 2 more things that i feel is important.
1- A in game calendar. Where you or your guild can organize events & more.
2- Make a better Targeting system.
