If your trying to teleport to a friend in a full map, it will not allow you to teleport, and will use up the item anyways. Why?
Luckily I got a bunch of free ones, because I would never pay for this.

I, and many others, reported this bug months ago. Anet has never fixed this item, so I guess that’s intended behavior.

Happened to me, yesterday as I tried to enter a full Teq map, thinking I just land in a different instance. But no, item was used and I couldn’t teleport there. What a waste…

What I don’t understand is how is this item different from partying with someone and joining their location through the party UI.

My belief is that this works cross-maps while the party teleport in you’re on the same map (it’s a way to get into the same ‘layer’ as the party in a zone), which is borne out by the posters above talking about porting to a map.

The difference is that it brings you directly to that friend. Even if you never been there.
For instance a new char fresh out of the tutorial can just teleport to a friend who stands in front of the Arah Dungeon.

I have a number of them thanks to birthdays and they were quite handy for getting to friends who’d gone to HoT areas I hadn’t yet explored. Before I had Exalted runes I was able to join in the Balthazar fight by teleporting to a friend who’d gone through the barrier blocking me. They do work cross map so long as it isn’t a full map; I could go from LA to Dragon’s Stand using one if a party member were in DS.

It’s also a reverse mesmer portal in a way. Got someone standing at the top of a JP you just can’t manage? (I’m looking at you, mastery point inside the egg-shaped airship in the canopy, or I’m looking at you on those rare occasions when I find the entrance). Teleport to them and get that darn point, without them needing to be a mesmer.

If the map is full you can’t get to it. The Teleport To Friend item serves its purposes.

What if you are in a location a friend can’t get to?

What if he doesn’t have the map you have at all?

Both cases allow the Teleport to Friend to be quite useful.

“He shall make whole that which was torn asunder.
Restore that which was lost. And all shall be as one.”

Because it actually ports you to their location. Right on top of their character. Using the UI as you described only puts you in their instance where you had already been standing.
